III. Products Chipoque Corporation offers a food product, and 3 beverages

products which offer the tropical vibe that can be felt when it tasted by the customers.

    A. Chick O’Lulu Chick O’Lulu is a platter which consists of Chicken Popcorn and

French Fries. The chicken popcorn is handmade and cooked with our company special recipe. The chicken popcorn also has additional seasoning flavors, which are Barbeque, Balado, Roasted Corn, Blackpepper and Seaweed. It is also accompanied by tasty Bangkok Sauce. This platter is a nice choice for snacks, simple yet enough to satisfy the hunger.

The platter itself packaged in a special packaging designed by our Creative Team, which implements an innovation in the Sauce boat which placed at the rim of the box.

    B. Lemme Squash Lemme Squash is a refreshing

beverage which made from Lemon Syrup combined with Soda water. The beverage also completed with homemade jelly as the topping. This beverage offers freshness and excludes tropical vibe which grabs customers attention in the middle of sunny day.

Step to make a cup of Lemme Squash

    • 1/3 shot of 100 ml lemon syrup • 1 scoop Jelly • Pour soda until half glass full • Add Ice cubes

  • 9

    C. Sporange Blast Sporange Blast is a beverage

product which made from Orange flavored drink, combined with Soda water and completed with homemade jelly and basil as the garnish. This beverage also offers freshness and it can drown the customers thirst and turn it into a Hawaiian fiesta on their tip of their tongue.

Step to make a cup of Sporange Blast

    • 3 scoop of extract orange • 1 scoop Jelly • Pour soda until half glass full • Add Ice cubes • Add 1 scoop of basil

    D. Teamonade Teamonade is a lemon tea which made from a high quality tea

leaves combined with lemon syrup. It also serves with lemon slices to increase the attractiveness and become a choice for consumers who are not really fond of soda or carbonated beverages.

    Direction :

    • Put 1 sachet of tea on the glass • Add 350 ml of water • Heated them all • After being heated, add more water until

1225 ml • Put them into glasses • Add 2,5 spoon of lemon syrup • Add 2 spoon of sugar • Add some slices of lemon fruit • Put some ice cubes, and teamonade is

    ready to be served

    E. Customer’s Feedback and Product Improvements On Chick o’Lulu, majority of the customers were satisfied. It’s

tasty and worth-it for the price. Some customers even buy the

  • 10

uncooked ones, as they want to enjoy the Chick o’Lulu at home. But, at the early hours on day 1, a customer complained about the taste as it was too salty, because the seasonings that we put was too much. But we were able to solve it quickly and tried to consistent on the size of serving.

Other product that customers complained about is the Teamonade. The flavor was not consistent. At times it tasted good, but at the other times it tasted bad. As the number of sales was not really high, we decided to erase Teamonade from the menu on the second day.

As for the improvements, our product can be improved by using higher quality materials and better production process. The consistency of the chicken popcorn size and the size of serving also can be improved. The beverages also can be improved with using fresh fruits for the taste, not the syrup or essence.

IV. Preparation Chipoque Corp. started preparation on every division from

October 21st, 2015. We started to choose our CEO from the company members. The 2 potential candidates for the CEO is Keshia Aferina and Edwin Prajna, as both has a vision on the concept and what should we sell. The company members voted, and Keshia Aferina chosen as the CEO, while Edwin Prajna chosen as the Vice CEO automatically.

When the organizational structure was completely built, each division started their preparation. These divisions were preparing on their own for the first 2 weeks, with the coordination of the CEO. This step was taken because we want to prevent ineffectiveness on the preparation process.

    A. Operation The Operation team, which led by Christianto Aditya, did

several preparation for the operation division. After Chipoque Corp. got the capital on November 4th from SBM ITB, we immediately had a meeting to manage and allocate the money into everything that we already planned. On November 5th, we listed every materials and ingredients that we need on the execution day. This is the list of everything that we need and also the place to buy it:

    • Chickens from Purwakarta

In the evening, all of Chipoque crew members start preparing the decorations. On 2015 November 20th, we printed the banner, menu, and promo. On the same day, the chicken that we ordered had just arrived D-1 before the execution day in order to make the chicken still fresh. In the evening, our chefs immediately cut the chicken fillet into a bite size.

    B. Marketing On 26 October 2015, Chipoque marketing team, led by Jane

Lukman, started to explore Jalan Riau for choosing the best and most strategic place to run Business Simulation. After about half an hour, we decided to choose JessieJames Factory Outlet and The Summit Factory Outlet for our Business Simulation location. Unfortunately, The Summit Factory Outlet refused us for building a tent at their parking area as they only have little area for putting customers’ cars. Then, we went to JessieJames Factory Outlet office and they asked us about the proposal. So, on the next day, 27 October 2015, the CMO ( Jane Lukman )made proposal for JessieJames Factory Outlet and we also contacted ForMen Factory Outlet for our back up plan. On 28 October

We talked about our products and prices and fortunately, all of us have a totally different menus. However, both Chipoque Corp. and Poptato Corp. would sell lemon tea. In the end, Chipoque and Poptato made a deal that both of us put the same price for Lemon Tea, which is Rp 8.000,00. Chipoque beverages division decided to add jelly to the Lemon Tea, to make our product a little bit different from Poptato.

On 11 November 2015, Chipoque marketing team started to do some endorsement photo shoot at SMAK 1 BPK Penabur and The Kartipah Dago. In the evening, Chipoque CMO, Maacie CEO, Poptato CEO did a meeting with JessieJames Factory Outlet manager for some agreements ( dealing the rent price, payment method and deadline, and discussing about the JessieJames shopping voucher ). Finally, on 21 November 2015 we uploaded our full team photos to tell customers that we were officially opened for business.

    C. Finance Finance division, which was led by Fachri Dwiansyah as the CFO,

started the preparation on October 25th, 2015. We started to make the Financial Budgeting. The Finance team collected the data from the Operation and Marketing team who did market research on the materials price, potential rent price, and also the tent and equipment rent fees. The Finance team coordinated with the Operation team to choose the best suppliers for the materials, considering the quality, price, and also the distance from our booth. The finance team also coordinated with the Marketing team on deciding which place to rent.

The Finance team coordinated with CEO and Marketing team to decide the suitable price of the products. As we chose Jalan Riau as the booth location, which known as a tourists shopping destination in Bandung, we set our prices not too high, but also not too low. We also did observation and interviewed our seniors and asked them about customers’ characteristics on Jalan Riau. The Finance team also discussed about the potential promotions which we will be offering on

    V. Execution

    A. November 21st, 2015 On November 21st, we arrived on site on 03.00 a.m. We started to

build up the tent, set the booth layout, and decorate the booth. The preparation was done by all of the company members. After the whole booth is set, the Operation team started to put the equipment and prepare the materials for the food and beverages. The Finance team also started to prepare the change.

After the pre-operation preparation was finished, the whole company members were briefed and reminded of their job description and shift. We also prayed and shouted our slogans.

On 07.00 a.m, Chipoque Corporation was officially opened for business. As the chef and barista started to make the products, the Marketing team also started walking around Jalan Riau and GOR Saparua. The Marketing team brought the walking menu and also beverages products to sell. Every hour, we shouted our slogan while did a simple choreography to attract the customers. For the first few hours, the traffic on Jalan Riau wasn’t really high and our customers also not as much as we expected to be. For the first few customers, we got mixed review. Although most of them said the product is tasty and the packaging is attractive, there were also some complaints, such as the Chick o’Lulu is too salty, and the Teamonade flavor is not that good. From these reviews, our chefs started to evaluate the process and solved the problems

  • 16

The peak hours started on 11.00 a.m. Majority of the customers were high school students from SMAK 1 BPK Penabur and SMA St. Aloysius, tourists, and locals who just finished shopping on the factory outlets. In these peak hours, the order flow was kind of hectic, as we were not fully prepared for the orders. The queue of orders exceeded 10 Chick o’Lulu at once. On these peak hours, the Marketing team also helped Cashier to take the order and explain the products to potential customers.

The peak hours ended on 02.30 p.m. After that, the queue was about 3 to 5 Chick o’Lulu at once. The customers still came at a constant rate, not as high as the peak hours, but also not as low as the early hours. In the meantime, the weather started to change. It started to cloudy with strong winds. The members prepared for the rain that was expected to come. In this time, the number of Chick o’Lulu sold exceeded 150 pax, and the Operation team started the restock plans.

On 03.30 p.m., The peak hours started for the second time. This time, the customers were tourists who came in buses. As the number of customers grew, the winds also got stronger, followed by heavy rain. The additional terpal that we set did not enough to shield the booth from rain. The ground also started to flooded by water. This condition forced us to close for business earlier on 04.15 p.m. We started to evacuate the materials, store the equipment, and clean up the rest of the booth. We left the tent and tables on the site, to reduce the preparation time on the second day.

The company members had a meeting in Stephanie Yosi’s house, in Dago, Bandung. As the tools and equipment cleaned up and the materials stored, we started the evaluation of the first day. The highlights were the main problem, which is the inconsistency in Teamonade flavor, the revenues, and the plans for the second day.

The company decided to stop selling Teamonade on the second day, as it will be much more complicated to fix the flavor. The number of Teamonade sales was not as high as we expected to be, as customers tend to buy the other beverage products. The revenue that we got on the first day was Rp 4.025.000. The Break Even Point was achieved in the mid-afternoon.

Other problem that we discussed about is the French Fries. The French Fries was harder to cook than the chicken. The preparation time for the fries is quite long, as it needed much time to crisp. Some of the

  • 17

customers thought the French Fries is undercooked as it was not as crisp as they expected to be. The fries also cost more than the chicken. With these considerations, we decided to lessen the quantity of French Fries served in a single portion of Chick o’Lulu.

After all of the main problems discussed and solved, we also reviewed the performance of every single company members and finalized the plans for the second day.

    B. November 22nd, 2015 On the second day, we started to arrived on site much later than

the previous day, as we learned that in the early morning, the traffic was not high. We started the preparation on 06.00 a.m. As the tent and tables already set up the day before, we only need to redecorate the booth and put the equipment back in place.

After the briefing and preparation was done, we opened for business on 08.30 a.m. In the early hours, the Marketing team did the mobile selling, both the food and beverages, to Car Free Day Dago and around GOR Saparua. In CFD, the Marketing team also delivered orders from other companies that located in Dago area.

In Day 2, the gap between peak and low hours were not really shown, as the customers came at a constant rate. The average queue of orders was approximately 10-15 Chick o’Lulu at once. Majority of the customers are family who enjoyed weekend, tourists, and people who came back from the church. Our location, which is Jessie James Factory Outlet, was functioned as a church in the Sunday morning, so there were a lot of people since 09.00 a.m.

One of the problem that we faced on the second day was ran out of materials. The skewer and eggs were out of stock. As the nearby convenience store did not sell the needed materials, the COO, Christianto Aditya, bought the materials on other store, which is quite far from our location. The customers needed to wait for about 20 to 30 minutes to get their orders ready.

It was also rained on the second day, but, as the tent was more prepared, the operation process was not disturbed and we were still open for business. The rain also came as a blessing for us, as many people who were trapped inside the Jessie James Factory Outlet bought our foods and beverages to accompany them during the rainfall. Several Hot Teas were sold during the rainfall.

  • 18

The Chick o’Lulu sold out just before the intended close time, 05.00 p.m. We were able to sold more than 400 packages of Chick o’Lulu as the chicken fillet was still in stock and the packagings were still available. This also caused by some of the customers bought the Chick o’Lulu in big quantity and asked to put the products inside their own lunchboxes.

The beverages also quite popular on the second day, both the Lemme Squash and Sporange Blast, as the production process got faster and the flavor better than the previous day.

Chipoque Corporation officialy closed for business on 05.00 p.m. The company members shouted the slogan for the final time and cleaned up the booth. The remaining ingredients sold to several merchants around Jessie James. After the tools and equipment stored, the tables and chairs and the tent already stored, we left Jessie James factory outlet and went to Stephanie Yosi’s house to clean up the tools and did the final evaluation.

    VI. Issues and Challenges

    A. On-time performance The main issue that we faced along the Business Simulation

experience is the lack of on time performance. Most of the company members were often, if not always, late in meetings. The reasons were varied, from stuck in the traffic jam, woke up late, and other reasons. There were also members who were mageran (lazy to move around).

To decrease the lateness, we often announced the time of meetings an hour earlier from the scheduled time. This step was proven effective as the number of members who late decreased and the meetings ran smoothly and more effective than before.

    B. Inconsistency in Teamonade Flavor The Teamonade, one of our main beverage products, became

one of our main problem. The lack of preparation in the recipe affected the consistency in the beverage’s flavor. At first, we planned to make the beverage by combining black tea and lemon essence. The test product tasted not as good as we expected. The smell and taste of tea overwhelmed the lemon, at some times, the lemon did not even tasted.

  • 19

On the execution day, the flavor of the beverage was still not consistent. At times, the beverage tasted quite good, while the other times it tasted bad. The number of sales was also not that good. Based on those experiences, we decided to erase the beverage from the menu on the second day. We used the leftover ingredients to make Hot Tea, which replaced Teamonade on the menu.

    C. Heavy rain with strong winds As the business simulation held in Late November, the region was

still on wet season. We experienced heavy rain with strong winds on both days. On first day, the tent was not prepared for the rain and we forced to close earlier than the intended time. It was kind of pity for us as the number of customers was growing as the rain got heavier.

On the second day, the tent was prepared better, so the rain did not stop us from operating. The rain was a blessing, as there were many people who were trapped inside the factory outlet that bought both our foods and beverages. In the heavy rain, we provided umbrella boys and girls who shield the customers from the rain. They also delivered the products from the booth to the factory outlet.

    D. Ran out of Ingredients On the second day, we faced problems in our ingredients stocks.

The eggs and skewer were out of stock and the restock process was not run smoothly as the weather turned out bad and affects the traffics. The usage of eggs and skewers was exceeded our prediction. Both of the materials were only available at several supermarkets that quite far in distance (>3km) from our booth location.

This shortage caused the customers to wait for about 20 to 30 minutes to get their order ready. Most of them were not complaining as they were accept the fact that the heavy rainfall disturbed the restocking process. But we also lose some potential customers who were in hurry.

    E. French Fries As we mentioned earlier in the execution section, the French Fries

also became an issue that we faced in the execution days. The fries needed to be cooked for quite a long time to make it crisp. The long process time forced us to cook the fries not until it crisp. The lack of crispy-ness in the fries made some of the customers to thought the fries

  • 20

were undercooked. The long cooking time also made the time to get the order ready longer.

The other problem on French fries is the high price of the ingredients. A kilogram of shoestring fries was cost as much as a kilogram of chicken. This could increase the production cost, so we decided to lessen the portion of French fries in a single portion of Chick o’Lulu and add the chicken popcorn instead.

    VII. Lessons Learned

    • A good coordination is essential for a great teamwork. A company, which divided into several divisions, need to have a

good coordination. A CEO, as the center of the company, is the one who responsible to manage all of the divisions. The divisions coordinate to the CEO and the other division to make sure the whole business process run smoothly.

As a great coordination and communication is built, the whole process will run efficiently and effectively. The members of the company also will work as a team, not as an individual.

    • A great team is the one who faced conflicts, and able to solve it for a better execution.

Many people thought that being a great team means being a team without any flaws, where everything ran smoothly. But, we also know that everybody has their own weaknesses and nobody is perfect. So, no matter how talented or skilled your team members are, there will be always a potential conflict.

In Chipoque, we faced quite lot of problems, challenges, and even conflicts. The whole business simulation process was not run smoothly. But, as we were trying to understand each problem, find the cause of the problems, and find the solution to solve it by brainstorming and discussing, we learned that a great team is the one who face and solve conflicts for a better execution.

Even the atmosphere of the team was kind of rough at times, by understanding each other and completes every single member’s weaknesses with the other’s strength, we grew more solid and managed to solve every other conflicts in a good and friendly way.

  • 21

    • Business is not a simple matter. Business is not just about producing and selling products. It’s more

complicated. There are many things to think, to compare, and to consider before taking a decision. Every decision is affected the whole business process.

From making the organizational structure, deciding the product to sell, choosing the vendors and suppliers, to choosing the method of producing and the marketing strategies, every single of those steps is really important. A single mistake can affect every other part of the company.

As we got quite a lot experience in this business simulation, we learned and understood more about business. We also try to be more careful when making a decision and solve every problems in a better way.
