The Mote High School Internship Program provides high school students with a dynamic, hands-on marine science experience that complements their traditional academic studies. Its perfect for students who are excited about marine biology, curious about Motes exhibit animals, interested in ocean conservation, and ready to participate in a structured research project.
The application process is competitive and the internship requires a significantcommitment of time and energy, but participation has many rewards. Interns become a valued part of the Mote staff as they assist with marine research, animal c
are, and the delivery of our education programs. They are also invited to participate in special classes, like SCUBA certification and kayaking, and attend field trips, such as a behind-the-scenes tour at Disneys The Living Seas and a weekend at Motes Tropical Research Laboratory in Summerland Key. Students may earn volunteer hours for Bright Futures scholarships while assisting with Mote educationprograms. Upon completing the internship, students receive college recommendation letters.
The high school internship is both a learning experience and a work experience.Interns attend after-school workshops at Mote throughout the school year (September through May) and commit to volunteer shifts every month either after-schoolor on Saturdays. Students spend a minimum of eight hours on-site at Mote every m
onth, and are asked to meet other participation benchmarks throughout the year. There is no limit to how much time you can spend at Mote! Interns chronicle their experience with pictures and posts on their own blog site, and each one produces an article about their internship for their high school newspaper.
There is a $250 course fee associated with this program. The optional SCUBA certification course offered through the internship requires an additional $350 fee. The optional weekend trip to Mote's Summerland Key laboratory requires an additional $450 fee. Scholarships for the high school internship program are available and will be awarded based on financial need. Please contact Gina Santoianni at (941) 388-4441, ext. 514 or [email protected] for more information and a scholarship application.
