Its perfect for students who are excited about marine biology, curi ous about Motes exhibit animals, interested in ocean conservation, and ready to p articipate in a structured research project. The application process is competitive and the internship requires a significant commitment of time and energy, but participation has many rewards. Interns beco me a valued part of the Mote staff as they assist with marine research, animal c are, and the delivery of our education programs. They are also invited to partic ipate in special classes, like SCUBA certification and kayaking, and attend fiel d trips, such as a behind-the-scenes tour at Disneys The Living Seas and a weeken d at Motes Tropical Research Laboratory in Summerland Key. Students may earn volu nteer hours for Bright Futures scholarships while assisting with Mote education programs. Upon completing the internship, students receive college recommendatio n letters. The high school internship is both a learning experience and a work experience. Interns attend after-school workshops at Mote throughout the school year (Septem ber through May) and commit to volunteer shifts every month either after-school or on Saturdays. Students spend a minimum of eight hours on-site at Mote every m onth, and are asked to meet other participation benchmarks throughout the year. There is no limit to how much time you can spend at Mote! Interns chronicle thei r experience with pictures and posts on their own blog site, and each one produc es an article about their internship for their high school newspaper. There is a $250 course fee associated with this program. The optional SCUBA cer tification course offered through the internship requires an additional $350 fee . The optional weekend trip to Mote's Summerland Key laboratory requires an add itional $450 fee. Scholarships for the high school internship program are avail able and will be awarded based on financial need.
