Klingon Sim - IKC Hegh'taby USFShodan

This reporter had the pleasure of being able to interview Admiral Clements (also known asHoDKahless, or Captain Qey'liS Sutai-d'k tahg, the Klingon captain) about the USF's Klingon sim.I am greatful to the Admiral for taking the time to answer my questions. Shodan: Why did you decide to start a Klingon sim?

HoDKahless: There have not been many decent role-playing Klingon type ships available onAOL, therefore, I decided to create the IKC Hegh'ta.

Shodan: What timeline are you playing TOS, TNG, or DS9?

HoDKahless: It is in the current timeline... First Contact, DS9...

Shodan: As a captain, what are your views of the Federation?

HoDKahless: I served with the Federation for a majority of my career, before transfering to theEmpire. I hope one day the Empire and Federation will function as one.

Shodan: What types of simmers are you looking for?

HoDKahless: We are looking for people who like high involvement. Ongoing stories during theweek is a must.

Shodan: Do the characters have to be Klingon characters, or can they be other species?

HoDKahless: No actually, within the next month the Hegh'ta is going under some large changes.We are going to become a Liaison between the Federation and Empire. Both Starfleet andKlingon Officers are going to run the ship. As you know, the Federation and Empire have notbeen on the best terms lately. ;-)

Shodan: Is your ship fighting the Federation, or is there a treaty?

HoDKahless: Our ship is allied with the Federation... although, the Empire, is not. Rememberwe're the liaison vessel.

Shodan: Is it strictly a starship sim?

HoDKahless: No, we make trips often to Qon'oS and spend a lot of time in between Klingon andFederation Space.

Shodan: What class of ship is the IKC Heghta?

HoDKahless: K'Vort

Shodan: How many people are on the ship?

WE NEED YOUR HELP !!!Have you recently wondered why you haven't seen a USF Log Book in almost two

months?? Well I am here to let you know. Those that had agreed to read and chose thelog excerpts from each ship have not gotten them in to me. For those of you that read theLog Book you know that one log/story is chosen from each ship to represent the ship forthat Log Book. Also additional stories are considered for the story excerpt section.

The Log Book started over a year ago, and I would hate to think that no one has aninterest in it coming out anymore. Many man hours go into making each edition what it is,both by the writers and the log book staff.

I am here to ask for your help. If you have an interest in reading the logs andstories from a ship in the USF and the ability to get me your choice once every two weeks,I would like to talk to you. I am looking for volunteers for the Log Book staff to helprebuild us back to our previous glory.

With the newest message boards in place, the posting of each ship's logs andstories is again a requirement for promotions. This means that we will see a flourishmentof logs again on the message boards. In turn this means that the Log Book will again seegrowth and interest.

The day that he came aboard the Excelsior, I know that I was not the only one to be at leastsurprised, and at most down right intimidated. Recently retired from the Admiralty, AmbassadorAnders was to be our ship's chief diplomat. It was very shortly after that day that we all realizedwhat good fortune we indeed had. Adding a dimension to our crew that had not previouslyexisted, Anders was at once silly and serious, and nothing like I had expected. I recall the day that he was the first non-Vulcan to try Lieutennant Commander Spock's ProteinComposite. That was just one example of his dedication to doing whatever he could to improvehis relationship with the crew. He was always friendly and an easy person with whom to get along(even if constantly illogical). I will not forget the time that I was deemed fit to serve with Ambassador Anders, and I do notbelieve that anyone who was at some point in the same position will forget. Today, preparations are underway for the final voyage of Jonathan Anders, RetiredAmbassador and Vice Admiral, for on stardate 9801.18, he was tragically killed. Although thespecific circumstances of his death have been permanently classified, known only at the highestlevels of Starfleet, this much is certain: Anders died doing what he had done for his entire career,conducting himself in a manner becoming the finest traditions of the United Space Federation.Services will be held on 9802.11 at 10:00 pm est on board the USS Halifax. New SIM Survey

::shakes head:: Well the Integrity does it again. It seems that a recent exclamationto the USF staff by the Integrity's commanding officer states that they are "God's gift towomen"? ::Rolls eyes at the male ego:: ;-)

Now usually this roving reporter would scoff at such a claim, but my recent visit tothe Integrity would have to support this statement. It was more of a relaxing free sim soCaptain Rigel was not on the bridge but in his quarters. Captain Rigel mentioned that hewas taking a shower, and I swear the whole room stopped to "watch". Well the femalepopulation that is.

All was going well though until I stepped up to the door to the Captain's quarters andrang its chime. Now as most had been keeping track of what the captain was doing, we werehighly surprised when HE ANSWERED THE DOOR !! ::Laughs:: To most in the room it wassurmised that the Captain was standing in front of the door in only a shirt.

Captain Rigel certainly had everyone's attention. I think Commander Gorkon musthave been slightly jealous at the shift in female interest since several comments were madeby him about the attention the Captain was getting. J/K Gorkon. You know they still luv ya.

When all was said and done, Captain Rigel insists that he was there shirt and pantsat the door. ::Grins:: The jury is still out on that one Captain. ::Looks to Mavelle for thatcopy of the chat log:: We'll let you know.

Federation gossip

Happy and sad time abound for the USS Federation and her crew. On SD 9802.22Counselor Kyrax Joven Akeiro and Doctor Rebecca Wingnton-Smythe were married beforefamily and friends. There ceremony took place in a lovely Irish castle on Earth. It seems that thepeace and tranquility of the evening did not last as an altercation involving eclairs and other foodobjects began between FsLtJScott and LTStDuiex. Shortly afterwards Mister Scottdisappeared. Hmm, did StDuiex use more than eclairs in that battle??

Bad news abounds for Captain Ariell Johannson-Riker and her family. Earlier thismonth she was informed of her husband's, Thomas Riker's, death. On SD 9802.28 she wasinformed of the presumed death of her twin sister's, Captain Ahrele Johannson's, death. (seeDarmok gossip above). Will Ariell continue to go further depressed and touchy at the least bitthing? I don't know about you but seeing as she has already "accidentally" shot the Counselor onthe ship, I wouldn't get close enough to find out. If this woman doesn't get some good news, thecrew might have to relocate her. ;-)

Welcome aboard to our new crew member, Symon Locke. Symon comes to us fromanother time. Lieutenant Commander Valdyr was seen making goo goo eyes at Symon, andhe made goo goo eyes back at her! Could it be that both of them need to see anoptometrist?

There are occasional contests to see who is the most insane. It's a close call, butValdyr might win, although Kaiyana comes in an awfully close second.

Roddenberry SurprisesThe Spy

They say chaos rules supreme on the Roddenberry. Don't believe it? Well, here's thenews. Mind you .. it's news. I'm not one to gossip. Remember that .. Really .. Aw come on ..don't look at me that way.

Mind you that the Roddenberry is overrun by weirdos. A certain Elf officer has engagedhimself to a lovely cat. Yup, you heard me. One must wonder what the kittens will look like. Butthere's more to the mess ... Ready? That certain Elf tends to throw out frightening words such assword sticking himself and lying on the ground. Scared yet? No? Well, there's more. He alsotends to throw out large remarks of how great his hair is. Rumor is that he gains his hair tips fromcertain jeweled Trolls. One must wonder if he models himself after the Chia Heads as well ... All Ican say to his fiancee is .. I hope you know how to cut hair.

Oh .. don't worry there's more. But remember .. you're not hearing it from me. There isanother cute couple on board. A certain Fst Lt. and Lt. have been seen leaving the same quartersat the same time! One has seen this certain Fst Lt. wearing the same uniform as the day beforeand worse .. :: gasp :: .. appearing late for duty!!! *Pisst* :: low whisper :: One word of advice FstLt., a wrinkled uniform really does make people notice. But not that it matters anymore, becausethese two are getting married!! All I can say is .. DOUBLE MARRIAGE!!!!

Oh .. just wait .. there's more. Looks like this team's medical staff is also over run bylunatics. The spread of a certain Doctor's influence from the USS Integrity has plagued the oncenormal Sickbay of the Roddenberry. Want to hear how this chaos looks like? Well, it's rumoredthat a certain Doctor has been put in charge as Assistant Chief Medical Officer, and since thedisappearance of the original CMO, she has overrun the ship with a certain chainsaw bit. Can yousay TM infringement?

Oh .. don't worry .. there's more. That exact same doctor has plagued the whole ship withher flirtation habits. It is said, from my sources mind you, that this certain doctor has captured theheart of certain officers. One certain Ensign, another certain Ensign Doctor, another certain Lt.

Junior Grade, and one certain Fst. Lieutenant. She must really be busy ... (Mind you, sourcessay she's got more in the infamous Ten Forward Lounge)

Baby Announcements (thanks to Zeyahl for this information)Robert Duncan McNeill and his wife Carole happily became parents again on January

21st to their third child, Carter Jay. It is reported that mother and family are doing well. A BigCongratulations to Robbie and Carole.

Roxanne Biggs-Dawson gave birth to her first child, Emma Rose, on January 16th.Originally Carole and Roxanne had the same due dates. I am sure that these families willcelebrate some birthdays together for their children. Mother and daughter are reported doing wellin the Dawson household as well. A Big Congratulations to Roxanne and her husband as well.

Deep Space Nine News (Thanks to CptnSierra)Yes it is official that Deep Space Nine is going into seven seasons. The sad and

unfortunate news is that Terry Farrell will NOT be returning for the 7th season.Terry Farrell hopes that the producers will send Dax off somewhere (like a fight with Worf

or reassignment) instead of killing off her character. I am sure that the rest of us feel the sameway.

{I have heard many rumors as to why she will not be back, so I can't give an accuratereason as to why. I believe that it had something to do with how she was treated in thenegotiation process. From what I have heard Paramount people can be ruthless at times duringnegotiations. ~~Ariell}

Not enough hours in the dayIn last month's issue I mentioned that the USF's own CptnSierra was trying to get an

interview with Robert Picardo at a recent convention. Unfortunately there was not time in theconvention's schedule to allow this interview. Robert Picardo is always very good with the fans, soI am sure that it was only because of the time restraints that he was unable to do an interview.Thanks for trying Si.

For a few years now friends of mine have been yelling at me to read Douglas Adams' TheHitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy (though it's actually five books, not three) and I finally gavein. I bought the first book of the series (entitled the same name) for about seven dollars, and fourdays later I had finished the book - it's really short, but it's still one of the best and funniest booksI've ever read. When the book opens, Arthur Dent is trying to prevent a bulldozer from demolishing his house- a simple Earthly situation, but by the end Arthur Dent, his alien friend who posed as an out-of-work actor, Marvin the mechanically depressed robot, the President of the Imperial GalacticGovernment, and Trillian (you'll find all about her) have stumbled upon the answer to "life, theuniverse, and everything." Imagine that the phone number of a girl you met years ago at a party isactually the probability that you'll be picked up by a space ship. Imagine that humans are only thethird most intelligent species on the Earth - after dolphins and mice! Imagine that a certain type offish can translate any language (including Vogon) if you place it in your ear. This is how theuniverse works in Arthur Dent's universe. Every word of the book has three purposes: to tell the story, to get you thinking, and to makeyou laugh. It was amazing - every other word put a smile on my face. The Hitchhiker's Guide tothe Galaxy (the book is named after an electronic guide to galactic travel which Ford Prefect is aresearcher for) tells a story of how everything improbable occurs. It sounds silly, but it's done in abrilliant way because Douglas Adams wrote everything in such a serious (though still amusing)tone. For example, the two page introduction is a mild satire of life and religion, but if you're notreading carefully you'll be lost in the serious (though, again, still amusing) story. I give this book a ten (out of ten), and because it's so short I expect everyone to go out andread it if you haven't already. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is one of those books that ifyou ask anyone, they'll tell you they've read it and thought it was amazing. Read it. (Comments?Suggestions? How To Get The Most Out Of SIMingby CdrKJanar and USFRSemino

Dear USF Friends: Salutations!! My name is Commander Katerina Janar. Almost a year ago an old Captain ofmine, Fleet Captain Richard Semino, ::claps cause she still thinks he's the best:: sent his versionof this to his crew. It impressed me so much that I kept it and would like to pass it on to all of you.

I changed it somewhat from his original version and added in some of my own "stuff" I learnedfrom SIMing. I'm sure Semmy won't mind and would probably puff his chest out knowing this wasbeing circulated. LOL I hope it may help ya out. Pass it on to your crews if you would like!

It goes something like this. Since joining the USF I have had my good times and bad as I am sure many of you can relate.During this time, I've tried to figure out what the "ultimate" SIM is. Sometimes we finish a SIM andthink, "WoW! That was an incredible SIM!!! Awesome!!" And sometimes we leave the PRgrumbling. ::smiles:: I don't claim to have found it, but I have found some key concepts thatcontribute to a quality and fulfilling SIM. If you implement these concepts which are outlinedbelow, you will have a blast! Hopefully. You don't have to read further or even practice these <<Most of you may already>>. These arejust gems that both of us discovered over time.

The 7 SIM Rules of (Fun) Acquisition . . . by Semmy and Jan. 1. Work From Leads. During a SIM, sometimes we feel we have to do something to be noticed ... to contribute ... toSIM the. Instead of creating something miraculous, follow any lead that is thrown out there. Try it. Following a lead makes you more aware of the SIM as it develops. It also slows down the SIM,because you don't have 15 people on their own agenda, which helps everyone read easier!<<LOL And I am sure there are many that have those wild scrolling nights 'cause ya just can'tkeep up!>> Instead, they're all watching carefully to see what each character is going to do. Assoon as an officer does something, work from the lead. Ultimately, you will be doing something ...you'll be working with a lead. What is a lead you ask? An action command, a descriptive comment, a vocal command. Examples: Lead 1: Action> Romulan Warbird decloaks Response A: Sir, sensors just detected a Romulan Warbird decloaking directly ahead. Response B: I'll adjust long range sensors to see if more are coming. Response C: Scanning their weapons now.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Lead 2: Ens Joe> ~~~Hmmm ... Romulans ... grrrr ~~~ Response A: :::notices facial expression of Ens Joe. He looks upset::: Response B: :::remembers Ens Joe's last encounter with Romulans::: What has happened here is everyone becomes focused on the SIM plot. Characters such asJoe begin to develop by working from the leads. And what a compliment! Someone recalled howhe felt during the last encounter! Your minds will become entranced into the SIM world ... it's veryrealistic. ::nods enthusiastically:: 2. Pay Attention To Characters. Similar to working with leads, pay attention to characters. Did they fall and hurt themselves? Arethey doing something they shouldn't be doing? The purpose for watching other people is two-fold. The first purpose is so you can react to their lead as mentioned in the first tip. For example, iftheir character falls, you can run to help them. Or if you see them sitting quietly, call on them andask them for help. Now you both will have something to do. <<Teamwork, guys. There's no "I" in team!>> The second purpose is so you can better determine the best time to create your lead. Forexample, if everyone has fallen and can't get up, <<LOL>> you're probably not going to haveanyone pay attention to you if you fall, too. Here would be your chance to come to the aid ofothers. Then perhaps someone would see you helping and come to help you, too. See, you

started your own little lead there just by following the course of action. So, by watching othercharacters, you can gauge the best time to take action for your own character. 3. Ask Others For Help. This follows the same theme as stated above. Ask other characters for help during the SIM.This not only gives you and the others something to do, but it makes people feel needed ... liketheir assistance and expertise are needed. <<You will find that you make the greatest friends inthose you never expected.>> 4. Use Small Paragraphs And Short Logs. When writing logs, break your paragraphs up into 3 - 5 sentences. Preferably, break longer logs(5 or more pages) up into separate e-mails of shorter logs such as supplemental logs or part 1, 2,3, etc . . . <<This also lends to the suspense when you cut the log off at a certain point!>> When faced with a large amount of text to read, people naturally tend to skim over it or skip ituntil later. It's difficult to follow the long paragraph, too. Long logs have the same affect. Ifsomeone is pressed for time, they may pass that log up and move onto shorter logs. Of coursestories are usually stated as such and are expected to be long. And of course everyone shouldbe reading each others logs, that goes w/o saying, but the more visually pleasing you make yourlog <<not 40 colors, please>>, the easier you make it to read and flow -- the more everyone willenjoy the story. Remember, this log is your work, it stands for you. Take pride in it and don't just splash somewords randomly in an e-mail. What you write says alot about you. make it as good as we allknow you are! |:) 5. Speak your mind. If someone has offended you with their log, sometimes it seems easier to ignore it, but later,tensions rise and you can become unhappy with the SIM, person or character. When a situationoccurs, address it. Address it in a mature manner. Tell the person how you feel diplomatically.Starting out a sentence with: "When I read your log, I felt......" or "I am upset about something Iread and I would like for you to give me your input on what I am feeling." are two good ways thatshouldn't put someone on the defense. Remember, you may take something totally different from what the writer intended. Give eachother the benefit of the doubt. Let them express themselves also. Allow the person the opportunityto amend the situation. The only thing we have to go on to express our emotions is this computer,as warm as it may get for having it on for so many hours like we do, it is still not a living breathingthing and can not explain as would a person. Give each other a chance. 6. Be receptive to ideas and feedback. But alas . . . Eventually, you will end up offending someone. The important thing is that whensomeone comes to us with their feelings, we should respect them and consider their point of view.Defenses will only create a deeper rift. 7. Carefully choose your words. When expressing your thoughts or opinions, think about the impact that your words will have on

others. Ask yourself, "How would I feel if someone said this to me? How would this person reactif I said this to them?" Be sensitive to their feelings. Instead of always following the rule, "Do ontoothers as you would have them do onto you", consider the rule, "Treat others the way *they* liketo be treated." And have a good time! This is supposed to be fun, that is the original reason we all joined theUSF to SIM out a ST kinda world. When it stops being fun, each of us has too look honestly atourselves and find the reason why it isn't enjoyable anymore. If you are honest w/ yourself and others, you can't go wrong! Television (TNT) cable station has started airing the first years of Babylon 5 episodes every day at7pm Eastern. You will also find the newest episodes airing every Wednesday night at 10 pmEastern in most areas.

Turner Network Television acquired the Babylon 5 series from Warner Bros Television.On the good 'ol WB Babylon 5 was kicked around and placed in strange times, so that those of uswho really wanted to watch B5 had to search the TV guide each week to find it. No problem, wefound it and kept it alive. Not even WB could kill the fan interest.

Babylon 5 has an excellent cast including Bruce Boxleitner, Tracy Scoggins, Jerry Doyle,Richard Biggs, Mira Furlan, Bill Mumy, Stephen Furst, Peter Jurasik, and Andreas Katsulas. It isa fine group of talented actors.

J. Michael Straczynski is also an amazing writer. The whole concept of the showoriginated from a 5 year story arc that he dreamed up. Nicely enough JMS is also veryaccountable to the fans. If we do or don't like something he likes to know. Many things havebeen changed for the better due to fan input. ::Wonders if Berman will ever get the hint and listento us fans. Laughs knowing that will never happen::

So tune into TNT and catch the show that is giving Star Trek and other science fictionshows a run for their money. Check out Babylon 5 !!!

This is the one stop that you should make to find out if anyone will be in your area soon. Thereare two main convention lists. One is a list of the Conventions in the United States (listed bystate). The other list contains the international conventions (including England, Austria, Australia,Ireland, Germany and Canada). If you see a ( ) around the name of a company like (CreationEntertainment) then that means to look at the end of the page for the address to that web site.

The Conventions are listed under the city and state that they are going to take place in. Iapologize if any of the information is incorrect. The people that run and schedule theseconventions change their minds frequently. We will continue to try to get the most accurateinformation that we can to you.
