B A Standard turning sequence - thread positionsLook closely at each picture, at the point where the unwoven warp meets the woven band. Look at the colors of the visible threads. Compare the arrangement you see to the chart on page 1.

If you lose track of which row you should be doing next, with any luck these pictures and the multi-row threading diagram on page 3 may help you find your place again, or correct any mistakes.

Drachenwald Academy of Defence Possibilities for ‘viking-style’ representations of the braids for the four ranks within the Academy.

From the Academy Charter (file dated 2017-05-20), the braid colors are described as: • Free Scholar: black• Provost: black and red - more black than red• Prefect: gold and black - more gold than black• Companion: red and gold - more red than gold.

The charts are all based on a variation of part of the Birka B22 band, in a threaded-in pattern. (The original band was brocaded.) I created these alternate threading charts in GTT, a piece of software written by Master Guntram - a reknowned tablet weaver. I annotated the threading of each chart in red letters/symbols, so that they are more directly comparable with the chart on page 1.

The background color (represented as grey) is assumed to be chosen either based on the clients preference or to blend in with the colors of their fighting garb.

The foreground color changes to represent the rank. Apart from the free scholar braid, either two or four colors are used for the foreground in each example. Take a look at those charts from about 5 to 10 feet away. That should give an idea of the balance between colors. (In the four color variants, the shading is biased towards the dominant color.)

The number of threads in foreground and background does vary. Please count the squares in each chart’s threading diagram carefully.

The turning sequence is identical in all cases.
