Cheerdancing has long been an effective medium to motivate the athletes and the

audience. The audiences and athletes felt alive while seeing the cheerdancers’ awesome stunts as they, too, feel the lingering fear and excitement whenever a dancer is hurled in the air. Everyone participates – be it the cheerdancers, the athletes, or the viewers – in his or her own way. Everyone was out of breath and excited for the talents to clash once again on the dance floor. Here are the chronological details of each unit for the information of everyone.

Rise of the Legends

With the black and white motif of their outfit, the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) cheer-dancers started the competition showing off what they have practiced for weeks. They emphasized to the viewers how tough this competition would be by having a “booming” start; clearly making the point that they are not there to lose this competition. Even though they placed 3rd, they gave memorable moments to the audience who watched their performance. Maybe, with a little bit more pour of their best movements to touch the taste of the judges, they will rise from their current state and be legendary in the Intramurals cheerleading competition.

Roar of the Tigers Last year, the Oroquieta Campus White Tigers did not participate in the Cheerleading competition. So, you can imagine the “whoa” for some old students because they just popped-in for this year’s cheerdance. Still, the audience did not fail to praise the confidence of their cheer captain because of his energetic performance. Wearing blue jerseys for the boys and blue outfits for the girls, they had their few lifts and tosses, and more of their performances on the floor. They placed last in the competition, but they will not be discarded for attention because they sure gave their all to the audience. Maybe if the White

Tigers tried harder and became more organized and flexible, like their fearsome Bengal and Siberian counterparts, they will surely be able to catch up and be the top predator in the rank list.

Spell of the Wizards

Performing the dance with magic in the air, the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) cheerdance group showed the viewers what they got. They had an organized formation with lots of daring flips and tosses, making the audiences’ stomachs drop. They wore neat outfits in: white, yellow, and green. The performance was certainly great, but they was not able to please the judges that much to place them on top. Instead, like last year’s result, they were announced as the 3rd placer in the competition. However, during the awarding ceremony last September 22, 2012, Kenneth Asuncion committee head for extra-curricular activities, announced that it was not the CAS who placed in the 3rd spot but CEA. Next year, with more potions, spells, tricks and vials of confidence, their magic just might take them to the top.

Rebirth of the Phoenixes Before their performance started, all actually thought they were going to perform after Unit 7 because of some technical problems. Luckily, everyone was able to continue the way it was planned before. Wearing blue, white, and black, the College of Policy Studies, Education and Management (CPSEM) cheerleading competitors wowed the fans with their feats and stunning flips and tosses. Rage of the Cougars “There will be no more ‘mediocre’ performances…” announced the Jasaan Campus representative during the cheer dance competition, and they impressively proved it. The Jasaan delegates, bearing the new title Raging Cougars, had their major comeback this time. They had mind-blowing jumps, throws, sudden lifts, and flips in their performance that really showed the audience that they are better off than being called mediocre. Wearing cute black and neon green outfits, they gave all they had and it definitely paid off. They, however, made it only on the 5th place in the competition. When asked how she felt about the result, the Raging Cougars cheer captain answered,” Question mark.”

Defense of the Guardians The Guardians have defended their title as cheerleading champ last year. The competitors from the College of Industrial and Information Technology (CIIT) showed a smooth and wonderful performance, clearly pointing to all that they will not hand down the trophy. The motifs of their outfit are white and black with tinges of yellow and red. In their chest lies a star and it showed off quite elegantly as they performed lifts and throws and more tosses that really scared yet entertained the crowd.

Despite the controversies and hullabaloos of the cheerleading result; indeed the audience had a great time watching each unit performed. This year, CIIT fiercely defended their title as the cheerleading champion, proving that all units must fear the power of their cheers.

CPSEM Prevails Dance Sports of Intramurals 2012

As a part of the opening program of Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) Intramurals 2012 last September 19, a dance sports competition was held at 12:30 in the afternoon at Limketkai Atrium. Each unit participated during the event. The dance sptorts competition had two categories: the Standard and the Latin-American.

During the elimination round, all pairs from the different units flaunted their moves on the dance floor. The judges selected their Top 3 pairs for each category. In both categories, the top 3 are from the: College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), College of Engineering and Architecture(CEA), College of Policy Studies, Education and Management(CPSEM). During the final round, the Standard category dances were Tango and Waltz, while for the Latin-American category dances were Cha-cha, Rumba and Jive.

These are the results for Dance Sports Competition.Standard Category: First placer: CPSEM (Unit 4)Second placer: CEA (Unit 2)Third placer: CAS (Unit 3)

Latin-American Category:First placer: CPSEM (Unit 4)Second Placer: CAS (Unit 3)Third Placer: CEA (Unit 2)

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Green Wizards and the College of Police Studies, Education and Management (CPSEM) Blue Phoenix were victorious in the modern and contemporary dance competition held last September 20, 2012 at the Science Complex (SciCom) grounds.

CAS representative Taiza Ejem together with her partner was hailed as the champion in the contemporary dance competition. The Oroquieta campus White Tigers and Blue Phoenix were proclaimed 3rd and 2nd runners up respectively.

Meanwhile, CPSEM ruled the spotlight as their representative in the modern dance competition started to harmonize the stage. CPSEM grabbed the title from last year’s champion, College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA), and they grooved it all the way as they showed their moves. CEA and College of Industrial and Information Technology (CIIT) were the 3rd and 2nd runners up respectively.

Wizard, Phoenix Bop-up in the Dance Floor

The University Intramurals happened last September 19-22 ended successfully. It seemed like a surprise.

Yes, a surprise! It undeniably gained, perhaps not a 100% grade, but two-thumbs up rating from the spectators.

Compared to past events, this year’s celebration of sportsmanship, unity and camaraderie was more organ-ized, gaining positive feedbacks from students and out-side community. It was indeed well-planned. Obviously, the Supreme Student Council (SSC), the highest govern-ing body of Mindanao University of Science and Technol-ogy (MUST), headed by its President Jayson Jay Dalman had started the planning months before the Intramurals.

They had met with the Vice President of Student Affairs (VPSA), Dr. Juana M. De la Rama to discuss various guidelines of the planned major events. Student-leaders from mother organizations were also there. They had also visited the satellite campuses of Oroquieta, Panaon and Jasaan to give them the clear guidelines and plans, though Presidents of the Central Student Organizations (CSO) of these satel-lite campuses claimed that they also encountered problems like not receiving a formal letter of invitation and lack of up-date from the main campus that made them call for updates, themselves. In fact, Jasaan Campus had not been cleared out with the cheerleading like the limitations of tosses and lifts. Nevertheless, when asked about major problems they have encountered with the people of main campus specifically the SSC, CSO presidents just gave their humble head shake. The efforts exerted, the good decision- making and wise planning of the people behind could be put into account.

However, with all the positive re-sponses came the so-called predicaments. Vari-ous issues suddenly popped out of nowhere.

The organizers were time-conscious. They really meant it when the game starts in a given time, they will re-ally start. Truly, it was good because it really proves that they are time-managed. However, rescheduling games and announcing it on eleventh-hour could be so disgust-ing. As a result, some of the college representatives were forfeited in various games. It seemed so unfair espe-cially to those colleges who knew the final schedule late.

Fairness was also unevenly distributed to some games. Yes, it was to be considered that extension campuses, due to limited budget, would also bring limited number of participants. Consequently, multi-tasking is a must. As point of fact, each student is required to play two to three games. Games that are assigned should not simultaneous to each oth-er, so that they could avoid problems with the time. However, due to some rescheduling of the games, extension campuses had faced what they tried to prevent. Exchanging of assign-ments resulted afterwards. Then, now, what’s the use of those Personal Data Sheets (PDS) passed to the mother organiza-tions in which these PDS showed who were the official players of a specific event? It is but another cliché, nevertheless the rules are inconsistent, making it unjust to other participants.

Another issue that happened was the announcing of the winners for cheerleading competition. The College of Arts and Sciences was the declared third placer of the said event af-ter the contest proper on the opening day. Nevertheless, after two days and during the Awarding Ceremony and in front of the crowd, an SSC officer announced that it was not the CAS

but the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) who got the third spot. It was so disgusting in the part of the Green Wiz-ards when they almost celebrated about their winning and so proud with their trophy and yet it was not theirs at the end. Rumored reason was that there was an error committed in tabulating and analyzing the results. What a shallow reason.

Through the years, University Intramurals come af-ter the other. Celebrations may be called as something that

Christopher Ian Filipino, a first year Bachelor of Science in Education major in Mathematics student, bested the 18 contenders during the very first MUST POP IDOL held at the Lim Ket Kai Mall Atrium on September 19, 2012.

Filipino managed to fare the three rounds of singing competition. His first song, “Grow old with you”, became his ticket to move on to the second round and join the top 9 contenders. At this point, the competition requires them to sing a fast song. His version of “Begging”, impressed the judges and the audience, earning him a slot for the top three, entering the final round. It was in the final round that the crowd’s support got hyped as he nailed the song “I won’t give up” that earned his victory.

Together with Filipino, Lindy Almira Palacat of Bachelor of Science in Public Administration and Marisol Maceren of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology were also victors placing 2nd and 3rd respectively. All winners received prizes from the sponsors of the MUST Intramural 2012.

surged up or pitched down. Nonetheless, there is one thing common with these Intramurals celebrations: it is the presence of predicaments and setbacks. Cheerless to say, these could be avoided or if not, then lessen. There are many ways. Care-ful handling especially with those critical things is one way. Through this, Intramurals surprises should come off in all posi-tives and not on the negatives. So, would you dare to move?

Y e s , F i e s t a N a h !“Dare to Move,” as the Intramurals 2012 theme, best fits the games that no one would ever set aside – the fiesta games. It appears that these games are usually being witnessed and practically being enjoyed by most Filipinos in some community celebrations in the country. September 20 to 21, were the scheduled dates for the fiesta games that every mother organization and the three satellite campuses of Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) took part of. Now, let us start the traditional clash!

PATINTERO

I dare you to move and don’t get caught. Harang-taga is the other term for patintero. This is a game where the mind and the body should come together. The Unit 7, Raging Cougars, from Jasaan Campus was proclaimed champion for divisions, men and women. Go Cougars!

DODGE BALL

I dare you to move and avoid being hit by the ball. The main goal of this game is to eliminate all members of the opposing team by hitting them with a ball, to be caught by a member of the opposing team. The Unit 5, White Tigers, from Oroquieta Campus won the men’s and women’s division. You got it, Tigers!

EGGPLANT AND TOMATO RACE

I dare you to move and sway your body. Using an eggplant and a tomato, this game has made the players and the audiences laugh for as much as they could. The Unit 2, College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) was proclaimed as the winner. Nice game, CEA!

EGG PASS

I dare you to move and pass the egg. Your favorite fried egg for breakfast can be used as a way of enjoying a game. This is as simple as throwing the egg and

wishing that your teammate would catch it. The Unit 1, College of Industrial and Information Technology (CIIT), succeeded and won this game. You made it, Blazing Guardians!

PIÑATA FESTIVAL

I dare you to move and hit the pot. This game will use your senses in hitting your goal. The word “piñata” most likely comes from the Italian word “pignatta” which means “fragile pot” as the European version used clay containers in carrying water. The Unit 6, Yellow Eagles, from Panaon Campus was declared champion in hitting the pot. Hit them hard, Eagles!

MARIA WENT TO TOWN

I dare you to move and wear everything you have. This is a dress up relay game. Each team member should wear the whole Maria-Went-To-Town garb. For this challenge, the Yellow Eagles prevailed. Good job, Unit 6!

SACK RACE

I dare you to move and jump as high and as hasty as you can. Obviously, this game will use sacks as its main implement in playing. This is another challenging and body-sweating game. Again, the Unit 6 made it to the top. Fly high, Eagles!

MESSAGE RELAY

I dare you to move and whisper the message. This needs your sharp memory. When one gets the message he should quickly pass it to his teammate. The Blue Phoenix, Unit 4, won this game. Applause for CPSEM!

These games are not just for fun but for team work. For the next challenges that will come our ways, I DARE YOU TO MOVE!

Hoops and nets abound the campus during the Mindanao University of Science and

Technology (MUST) Intramurals 2012. As this year’s theme suggests, the unit players dared to show their high-flying moves. Be it basketball, darts, table tennis, or in any other sport, the MUST delegates will surely fire you up with excitement when you witness their awesome performances!

From Hoop to Hoop

When it comes to basketball, be it male or female category, avid fans would always go wild with support for their teams. MUSTeans also have that spirit, by the truckload! Under the men’s division, the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) triumphed above the other contenders, while the College of Policy Studies, Education, and Management (CPSEM) emerged as the women’s division champs. Looks like the Risen Legends and the Blue Phoenixes are in for a celebration!

Nothin’ But Nets!

Volleyball is also considered as a famous sport here in the Philippines. Focus, determination, and high endurance are just some of the qualities a volleyball player must possess, and MUSTeans would never relinquish the opportunity to show that! Topping both the men’s & women’s division are players from the Oroquieta satellite campus of MUST. Hear the White Tigers roar!

Ping-Pak-Pong!

Next up is table tennis, which is commonly referred to as ping-pong. To those who are new to MUST, the Student Center (SC) was the original “home of ping-pong”. It is no wonder why we got loads of ping-pong players, and also no wonder why the College of Industrial and Information Technology (CIIT) and CPSEM prevailed as champs in the men’s and women’s division, respectively. The Blazing Guardians and the Blue Phoenixes are definitely on fire!

Checkmate!

Chess is basically a battle of the minds, anticipating the moves of your opponent before it even happens. Though it does not require much physical effort, it still is considered a sport.

In this mind-twisting game of wits, CIIT and CEA bested everyone under the male and female category, respectively. Guardians and Legends definitely rule the chessboards!

Of Shuttlecocks and Rackets

Adding to the long list of famous games is badminton, which is a great outdoor sport. Long, light rackets extend the players reach, compared to the short and heavy ones for lawn tennis. Both men and women can play this game, which was proven by CEA (men’s division) and CPSEM (women’s division), the victors of the tournament.

Bull’s Eye!

Darts is also considered as a sport, where precision and accuracy are the keys to success. With keen sight and pinpoint accuracy, CEA (men’s division) and the Jasaan campus (women’s division) hit the bull’s eye, garnering 1st place. Rise, Legends! Roar , Cougars!

Goal! Futsal, or futbol Sala, is a derivation from the American football. Instead of playing it in an open field, futsal can be played in a small area, kind of like a standard house’s floor. Usually, only males play this game, and it is in this sport that CIIT (once again!) emerged as champions. Keep blazing, Guardians!

A Kick for the Win

Sepak takraw, or sipa in the Philippines, is also called kick volleyball. It is a sport of Malay-Thai origins. It’s just like playing volleyball; only, you can only use your feet, knees, chest, and head to touch the rattan ball. Like futsal, this game is usually for men only. For this event, the Panaon campus succeeded, proving that the Yellow Eagles have what it takes to soar high.

All in all, the 4-day event was full of fun, excitement, and celebration for the winners. Yet, the essence of sportsmanship and camaraderie linger among the delegates. Busa, bisan ug unsay mahitabo, sports lang gihapon ta, bay!

Di erent bands played all kinds of genre on the third day of the annual

Intramural of Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) last September 21 at the Science Complex (Sci Com) grounds. Some of the bands who rocked the event through the strums of their electric guitars and thuds of the drums were Wrenched, Petals, Jick andJall, Kiss Your Gf, and many more. e Supreme Student Council (SSC) initiated the event inviting di erent bands with members who are either bona de MUSTeans or non - MUSTeans. It was a teaser for the Band Competition which happened a er the Band Festival. With their screams and loudness, more students got hooked, gathered and listened to their music.

K enneth T. Asuncion, Committee Head for extra-curricular activities of the Supreme

Student Council (SSC), announced last September 22, 2012 the mother organization’s mistake in giving the 3rd place to the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) which was supposedly for the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA) in the Cheerdance Competition held at the Limketkai Atrium last September 19, 2012.

e announcement was greeted by silence from the audience when the Cheer

Captains from CAS and CEA were asked to be on stage during the Awarding Ceremony. Domz Yulores’, Cheerleader representative from CAS replied, “It’s just a trophy, what matters is the unity of the colleges”. e crowd, especially the Risen Legends, became festive as Yulores turned over the trophy to CEA.

CEA insisted that SSC should apologize to the public for the big error done. On the other hand, the Risen Legends crowned again as the overall champion for this year’s Intramurals.

Turning back through time, a night filled with royalty embodied the whole of the Limketkai Atrium as the candidates for the much sought after search for Mr. and Ms. MUST 2012 captivated the crowd when they came out bearing the likeness of the most beautiful and handsome Olympian Greek gods and goddesses during this year’s Intramurals. It showed evidently that the plans for the pageant were laid out very well starting from the stunning opening performances down to the pageant proper. The candidates descended from their Olympian home as they showcased their Greek god and goddess inspired attire, which then had the crowd to a wild trying to spot their respective bets. Ms. Roxinne Jearl Monterde, one of MUST’s beauty queens acted out as the host, she then read the first set of minor awards. Mr. and Ms. Dunkin Donuts was awarded to Wizards Neal Brian Rendal and Legends Alyanna Jane Darza, while Legends John Ronald Seno and Alyana Jane Darza were awarded as Mr. and Ms. Natasha. Neal Bryan Rendal was also proclaimed as Mr. Boardwalk together with Phoenix Charisse Flexie Lendio as the Ms. Boardwalk. The preliminary question and answer portion took place right after. The set of questions were already given to the candidates, the male candidates took the first turn in answering the questions written in the golden scroll and then the female candidates followed afterwards. The crowd’s excitement was intensified when the male candidates flaunted of their Herculean bodies as they ramped out bare-chested on the stage for their swim wear attire, girls and surprisingly some of the “boys” could not help but cried wolf as each male candidate passed by. The female candidates wowed the crowd and made the boys struck out their eyeballs as they showed off their Athenian beauties as they each made their way to the stage. Wearing their elegant gowns and attractive tuxedos, the candidates as if, floated aimlessly while the audience marveled at them. The last set of minor awards was then given which only made the candidates and their supporters grew with mixed emotions. Cougars Mike Jun Zaballero and Jessa Malaygay were given the award Darling of the Press, while Cris Angelo Andrade and Precious Alyana Apalisok turned out to be the Mr. and Ms. Personality, respectively. Lance

Pabua and Alyanna Jane Darza both garnered the award for Best in Swim wear. The night drew of to a close as the top five male and female candidates were hailed: Kevin Ray Albert Dajan, Neal Brian Rendal, John Ronald Seno, Mike Jun Zaballero, and Jeffrey Kristoffer Grio for the male category. Jemilene Centeno, Alyanna Jane Darza, Precious Alyana Apalisok, Charisse Flexie Lendio, and Liezel Tan joined the top five for the female category. The crowd showed different reactions as the final five pairs gave their best shot in answering the final question and answer portion. The same question was given to all the female candidates and the same procedure also held true with the male candidates. While waiting for the results, Ms. MUST 2011 Lovely Jane Estampa made her final walk. Screams and wolf whistles amplified the excitement as the most awaited part of the pageant came to a close. The crowd could not help but scream out at the top of their lungs cheering and shouting the names of their respective bets. The 2nd runners-up were Jeffrey Kristoffer Grio of Unit 1 and Jemilene Centeno of Unit 2. Followed by Unit Three’s 1st Runners Up, Neal Brian Rendal and Liezel Tan. Next was the award for Mr. and Ms. Trailblazer which took everyone by surprise as it was added to the set of major awards, the same panel of judges were the one’s who made the selection, Unit 2’s Kevin Ray Albert Dajan was awarded as Mr. Trailblazer and at the same time Mr. Superscent Oil, while Charisse Flexie Lendio of Unit 4 was crowned as Ms. Trailblazer and Ms. Mestiza Soap as well. John Ronald Seno of Unit 2 and Unit 4’s Precious Alyana Apalisok were hailed as this year’s Mr. and Ms. MUST. The search for Mr. and Ms. MUST continues to showcase not only the beauty but as well as the students’ wits and talents. With each passing year, the pageant innovates and creates a more productive approach making its spectators look forward to witness it, year by year. The pageant does not only end after the crown has been passed on, for together with it is the responsibility and idealism that is manifested by the one carrying it.
