PASTOR’S LETTER: 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

COMMUNITY LIFE

Fr David Mulholland

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

The liturgical year is coming to a close. Next week we celebrate the Solemnity of Christ the King and then it’s onto the season of Advent and soon after, Christmas. As this “year of grace” comes to a close, the Church has us focus on the end times and the ushering in of the glory of the fulfillment of God’s Kingdom. The Sunday readings speak of the days of the Son of Man coming down from heaven in the clouds. The Gospel speaks of ominous things; times of darkness that will give way to light and tribulations that give way to the coming of the Lord.

But then the gospel says this:

“Learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near. In the same way, when you see these things happening, know that he is near; at the gates.” Mark 13:28-29

What are we to learn? I think we are to learn that despite all the predictions of what is going to happen in the future, we simply go about being faithful disciples! The Lord is near, yes! He is always near! And like the fig tree, which can predict the ushering in of summer, so we too should be ready to receive the Lord at the proper time, whenever that might be. The fig tree’s branches just do their natural thing; they sprout and bear fruit at the proper time. We are called to do the same; to put aside anxiety and fear about the “end” and do what we are called to do as faithful disciples: trust and follow the Lord.

Too often, we worry about things that are beyond our control. Whether it’s the “end times” or what you are going to do to make “ends meet” in your family budget, the call to trust in the Lord’s love and care is the same. In a homily at a prayer service last month, Archbishop Sartain made a significant reminder of what we are called to be as the Lord’s disciples. It’s a good reminder for us as we consider the coming of the Lord at the end of our time:

“Jesus calls his disciples to live in such a way that we allow the grace of his heavenly Father to overtake us. Jesus calls us to surrender, to abandon ourselves to the wisdom and power of God, to trust that in every situation life brings our way . . . we are to cling even more strongly to the ways of his Father, to trust ever more blindly that he will bring good out of all things. The favors of the Lord are never exhausted, his mercies never spent, so great is his faithfulness.”

May God bless you all!

Statement by the Archdiocese of Seattle Regarding Recent Settlements of Clergy Abuse Lawsuits

The Archdiocese of Seattle has reached settlements over the past two months in 7 individual cases involving allegations of clergy sexual abuse. In each of these cases, the alleged abuse occurred between 30 and 60 years ago. The Archdiocese has attempted to arrive at fair and just settlements to assist victims with healing and to achieve some measure of closure. The members of the clergy involved in all of these cases are either deceased or have been permanently removed from ministry. All of their names appear among those on the archdiocesan public disclo-sure list published in 2016.

The Archdiocese of Seattle urges anyone who suspects abuse by any Church personnel to contact local law enforcement. In addition, anyone who has knowledge of sexual abuse or misconduct by a member of the clergy, an employee or volunteer of the Archdiocese of Seattle is urged to call the archdiocesan hotline at 1-800-446-7762.

Please note that the settlements discussed above included a claim of sexual abuse made against a former pastor of

Saint Patrick, Thomas Pitsch, 50 years ago.

Please pray for this person and all victims of sexual abuse for healing and renewal.

The cast of characters is strange and exotic:

shepherds and magicians, an emperor and a despot, angels,

and a baby who is Almighty God.

The strangeness calls for an explanation, and this book

provides it by examining the characters and the story

in light of the biblical and historical context.

Bestselling author Scott Hahn, who has written extensively

on Scripture and the early Church, brings evidence to light,

dispelling some of the mystery of the story.

Yet Christmas is made familiar all over again by

showing it to be a family story.

Christmas, as it appears in the New Testament,

is the story of a father, a mother, and a child - -

their relationships, their interactions, their principals,

their individual lives, and their common life.

To see the life of their “earthly trinity” is to gaze into heaven.

Join us for warm fellowship - to delve deeper into the

Christmas story, and the beloved family on which it is based.

Bring a friend - all are welcome!

SOCIAL JUSTICE

THE FACE OF HOMELESSNESS: Not just those living on the street or in abandoned buildings are homeless. People who currently have no permanent housing, such as living in shelters, SRO’s, doubled up with another family, in shelters or transitional housing, will lose their housing (i.e. eviction), and those fleeing an unsafe environment (i.e. domestic violence) are also considered to be homeless.

We live in one of the most affluent countries in the world and should be appalled by the number of homeless in our country. As Christians and Americans we need to come together to find a solution to the problem, but until we find that solution we need to help alleviate as much of their suffering as we can.

Jesus said, “Whatever you did for one of the

least of these brothers and sisters of mine,

you did for me.” (Mt. 25:40)

There is a basket on the back table where we are collecting winter clothing

(hats, scarves, gloves, sweaters and warm socks) to help the homeless.
