In acommunity, the general motive for participation

is belonging, principally, belonging to an institution

greater than oneself or even the sum of its members.

In acollective, the investment is in participating.

That participation allows the individual to take action

that is meaningful to a larger group of people (if notaided by advice or information from the larger group)

but without the immediate sense of reciprocity that

community entails.

As a general rule, communitiesare judged more by

who they exclude than by who they include. In that

sense, the cost to enter a community may often be

high and constitutes an actual investment, if not in

money then in time, training, or probation.

In contrast, collectiveswork to mitigate entry costs,making it easy to join and requiring few barriers for

membership.

The Portable Center for Contemporary Art

Transportable, low-budget device for art display. It is designed for

short-term interventions in public spaces and can be moved andinstalled easily by one person. The goal of this project is to

investigate, through exhibition praxis, the relation between publicand museum, and to bring new knowledge about the art system, its

institutions and strategies of legitimation. The P.C.A.C.contextualizes the artwork and activates new social situations
