must apologise for this but I believe the new minister will bring this number down,” he said.On education funding, Mal. Adamu said the Buhari administration has injected about N1.3 trillion into the education sector in the last four years.“The UBEC interventions in states have recorded a total of N350 billion while TETFund and NEEDS Assessment interventions have recorded N857 billion with the main ministry and other agencies recording N86 billion totaling N1.3 trillion in the last four years.

i g e r i a ' s E d u c a t i o n Minister, Adamu Adamu, Non Tuesday identified his

successes and major failure as education minister.Mr. Adamu who spoke recently at his valedictory press conference in Abuja said his inability to reduce Nigeria' out of school children despite his pledge to do so was a shame on him.He apologised to Nigerians over his inability to fulfill his promise to reduce the number of out-of-school children by half before the end of his tenure. The minister said the status of Nigeria as having the highest number of out-of-school children globally “was a big mark of shame to him as a person and to the entire nation.”According to the minister, the concerns of this administration have been two-fold: “to find an empirical means of getting the actual figures and best ways to reducing the number to the barest minimum.”He said Nigeria has one of the highest number of out-of-school children in Sub-Saharan Africa” and perhaps in the world and ranked only second to Pakistan.”“When I came on board, I promised to bring the number of out-of-school children to half. n recognition of her passion

for education and interest in Ipolitics at both State and

Federal levels, the Chairman of

the National Board for Technical

Education (NBTE) Governing

Board, Prof. (Mrs.) Modupe

Adelabu took her turn to give the

series 334 Inaugural Lecture of

t h e O b a f e m i Aw o l o w o

University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The lecture which took place on ththe 26 March, 2019 at the

Obafemi Awolowo University,

Ile-ife, was titled “As it was in the

beginning, so it is now: Politics

and Education Policies in

Nigeria”.

An education policy maker and

implementer par excellence, her

vast background as an academic

educationist and foray into

politics gave her an uncommon

insight into the symbiotic

relationship between education

and politics.

Prof. Adelabu noted that the low

female participation in Science

and Technology gives them just a

t o k e n r e p r e s e n t a t i o n i n

government and private sector.

She therefore opined that gender

mainstreaming will enable

She further stressed that tertiary

institutions and ideologies are

formed.

While addressing the challenges

and problems of recruiting and

retraining quality teachers for

Nigerian schools, Prof. Adelabu

noted that for Nigeria to achieve a

National Agenda on Education,

government and its agencies must

adopt practical measures in

recruiting and retraining quality

teachers.

This she noted must include

radical improvement of the

conditions of service of practicing

teachers, professionalization of

teaching in Nigeria, introduction

of individualized and merit-driven

promotion policy for school

teachers, enactment of legislations

on job-tenure of practicing

teachers as well as an improved

educational funding at least to

conform to international minimum

standards.Prof. Adelabu who also stressed that Technical and Vocational education was the major panacea to poverty reduction and national development recounted her role as the Chairman Ekiti State Universal Basic Education sector, where she facilitated pupils' interest in TVET b y i n t r o d u c i n g t r a d e fair/exhibition of pupils' TVE activities as entrenched in the National Policy on Education among others.

While addressing the need to

diversify Nigeria's economy, she

noted that a vigorous reliance on

Voca t iona l and Techn ica l

Education was not only a panacea

to poverty reduction but also an

avenue for making education

services relevant to both urban and

rural dwellers.
