COURSE DETAILS
Overview Delivered by Sydney Flight College, in a one on one environment during a time which suits both you and your instructor, the Diploma of Aviation (Instrument Rating) gives you the flexibility of choosing when to study and fly.
This qualification has been designed for people who have already completed their Commercial Pilot Licence, and wish to gain their Command Instrument Rating.
The Command Instrument Rating is considered the pinnacle of professional qualifications for either commercial or private pilots. It is the same qualification that is held by all airline pilots. As a result of completing the Diploma of Aviation (Instrument Rating) and successfully passing the Instrument Rating Exam (IREX) held by CASA, you will be eligible to obtain your Command Instrument Rating (CIR).
The CIR allows pilots to fly in full Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) at all phases of the flight, during the day and at night. If the weather conditions at the departure aerodrome or the destination are below the criteria for visual flight, the pilot is able to conduct either an instrument departure or an instrument approach by following a prescribed procedure.
Your training syllabus will encompass basic instrument flying, radio navigation aid tracking, instrument approaches and landing procedures, and emergency procedures. You will participate in extensive simulator training where you will practice all procedures (both usual and unusual) that you can expect to encounter when flying.
While the CIR can be completed in either a single engine or a multi-engine aircraft, it is common practice for commercial pilots to complete the rating on a multi-engine aircraft, as charter customers cannot be carried in IMC conditions in a single engine aircraft.
Your CIR must be renewed annually; this entails a flight test with an approved test officer.
Course unitsThroughout your training in the Diploma of Aviation (Instrument Rating) course covers a range of units of competency that will equip you with the skills and knowledge to perform a range of tasks, including:
Implement threat and error management strategies
 Manage safe flight operations
Plan a flight and navigate aircraft under instrument flight rules
 Operate and manage aircraft systems
Operate aircraft using aircraft flight instruments
Conduct 2D and 3D instrument approaches
Perform instrument arrival and standard arrival route procedures
Operate aircraft in the traffic pattern at night
Perform published and non-published instrument departure procedures
 Perform visual circling approach
To view the qualification and unit information as it is represented in the training package, visit training.gov.au and search using the AVI50215 qualification code.
