Quote - “There is nothing more unequal than equal treatment of unequal people.”
- Thomas Jefferson
The term is racing by! The whole school has just completed a health unit focussing on ‘Keeping Ourselves Safe’. I know it has created many interesting and sometimes challenging conversations at home.
Thank you for your ongoing support for this programme that is taught across the country and with the support of police education officers. The cyber safety component was appreciated by students and parents too. John Parsons who led the discussions is coming back next term to spend more time with us. Thank you to the fundraising group for supporting this initiative.

SCHOOL FUN RUN On Friday the 5th of September, Year 0-6 went to the beach for the Fun Run. When we got there in our house colours, we did some jump jam and then our groups went to the activities. The activities were really fun. My favourite one was one where you take someone to the other side of a small hill. Then we got to have lunch. I had cashews and carrots and then they announced the winning team. Whenua came 4th. Moana came 3rd Tatahi came 2nd and Ra came 1st. Then we all walked back to school. - by Bradey and Corbin

Last Friday the whole school went to the beach to do the fun run. There were four activities to do. My favourite activity was when I had to lift my buddy over a pretend river. It was fun even though Ra won the day. - Keira Room 5

RUNNING AWAY You’ll never guess what I did when I was a baby. Well, when I was one and at my nanas house, I sneaked out of the door and toddled to the footpath by myself! Nana didn’t notice that I was gone. But when she looked out the window she gasped! I was not supposed to be there, I was supposed to be playing in the longue. My nana called my cousin to zoom off and try to catch me. He grabbed me around the tummy with my arms and legs dangling like an octopus. He limped back to nanas. I giggled and smile all the way there. When she saw me she gave me a huge hug. - By Janeille Y4 Room 7
ESCAPE! You’ll never guess what I did when I was a baby. I escaped from my cot with bars. I clambered out when my mum was asleep. The reason why my mum did not wake up is because she can sleep through anything apart from banging pans! I waddled down the stairs and sneaked to the kitchen. I pulled out some pans, went to the pantry, got a biscuit and started to munch it down while I was banging pans. It sounded like thunder! When my mum woke up she was furious because I was banging pans together. But when she saw me she just shrugged her shoulder picked me up and put me back in my cot. - By Lexus Y4 Room 6

Community Oral Health Service
OPEN through term breaks Did you know?
‘Rotting teeth’ continues to be a reality for 40% of children starting school in the Nelson Marlborough region. In New Zealand our sugar consumption is third in the world behind
Mexico and the USA. Sugar – How much is
too much? is the focus of Oral Health Week. Pick up a flyer at your School, Early Childhood or Oral Health Centre to see the daily sugar in-take guidelines and become a ‘sugar detective’ and find out how much sugar your family is consuming in their food and drink. Nelson 539 5324 and Stoke 539 5321. - Community Oral Health Service
ANOTHER RETIREMENT Last night the Board received notice from Sue Curnow of her resignation effective from the end of year. Next term we will celebrate with Sue and Carol their valued and significant contribution to our school.
LOST PROPERTY We have collected a large amount of lost property since the beginning of the term. We have collection bins in the Moana Room, the Burrell Centre, Room 7 cloakroom and Room 12. Please check to see if any of these items belong to your children. Naming all items of clothing enables us to return them to the rightful owner.
FROM THE HEALTH DESK Coughs and Colds - We have a number of students away with flu like symptoms of vomiting, diarrhoea, headaches, high temperatures,
coughs and colds. This is a reminder to expect your children to regularly wash their hands. Home remedy for Headlice
- Try this!
Coconut oil and apple cider vinegar mixed together. Coconut oil dissolves the lice’s outer skeletal shell instantly. Once you put it on someone’s head you can have them shower and rinse it off right away and all the lice will be killed and gone! Plus there are no chemicals.
Chickenpox - We have a small out break of chickenpox in our school. They are very contagious and children are infectious from 5 days before the first lot of blisters until 5 days after the last blister appears. Children must stay home from school during this time. - Mrs Tambisari, Health Coordinator

TAMURE AND
THE TANIWHA Once there was a ferocious man eating Taniwha that lived in the sea next to the beach. Taniwha liked to chase people
that were walking along the beach with beautiful sand. He chased the wakas and bit them in half and ate the delicious fish. Tamure was a giant, “I will go and punish that Taniwha to the deeps of the Moana”, said Tamure. He stomped down the cliff where the Taniwha was getting ready to chase people. The ground was still shaking from his walk. Tamure carefully climbed down the rocky cliff and ran into the shallow blue water. Suddenly Tamure got a hold of the great big Taniwha and beat him by punching and pulling him so hard. The mean evil blue Taniwha took off slowly into the deepest trenches of the entire ocean. It’s fine and safe to walk on the crunchy sand. It’s also safe for the fisherman and their wakas made of wood. - Tara Yr 2 Room 12

WHAT IS A RUGBY BALL? Writing in Tamaki Room A rugby ball is a special ball for the game of rugby. A rugby ball is an oval shaped ball. It is easy to handle, hold and carry. Some modern day rugby balls are made out of vinyl. A rugby ball can fly far and fast when thrown in just a few seconds. Some players can throw it more than four metres. If the pass is thrown well, it moves in a spiral motion towards the catching player. A rugby ball can be from size 3 to 5. It can have advertising on it from the maker of the ball. It can be in many colours. A silver fern on a rugby ball makes people think of the mighty All Black team. - Bennett Yr 6
