The power of music

“By definition, Community Events have direct and indirect impacts on a community. They provide opportunities for participation, skills development, volunteering and social economic enhancement. Beyond that, they contribute to the quality of life across a community by strengthening communities, providing unique activities, building awareness and act as a source of community pride.”

Oneof the big struggles organising anevent isworkingwithin the limitationsofpublictransport.Lastyear,atthefirstmusicfestival,weendedat6pm,afterthelastbushadleftWelcomeBayforthecity.At the same time, the buses thatwerein regular service during the afternoonweretotallyoverloaded.

In preparing for this year’s event,we received a Facebook post from ajustifiably irate mother who pointedoutthatlastyear, atfirstshewaitedanhourforabustoarrive, andthenshewasdeniedentry to thebuswithherpram, duetooverloading.

This year we were thrilled at the

immediate response to that FacebookpostbyastaffmemberoftheRegionalCouncil. Without further ado, and withapprovalfrommanagement, heorganisedtwo special buses to be stationed inEsmeraldaStreettowardstheendoftheMusic Festival event, and they left onlywhentheyfilledupwithpassengers.Thiswasinadditiontotheregularservice!

Our Community

Thetwoquestionswe’remostregularlyasked at the Community Centre (after“Where’stheloo?”)are,“Whatdoyoudohere?”and“Howdoyoufundthis?”

Community Centres such as thisone require two types of funding:operationalfundingthatgoestowardsthe building, utilities, wages andother overhead expenses, and projectfunding. The latter isused forspecificprojectssuchastheMuralArtProject,community-led events like the FamilyMusicFestival, specificyouthactivities, andotheruniqueprojects.

Like many Not-For-Profit (NFP)organisations, we depend on fundingfrom a number of sources; some aregovernmentandsomenon-governmentsources.

Various government sources give moneyCentral government funding sourcescan include Ministry of SocialDevelopmentandDistrictHealthBoardcontractstoprovidespecificservices, orfundingthatisdistributedthroughtheDepartmentofInternalAffairs, suchasLotteriesandCommunityOrganisationsGrants Scheme (COGS). Creative NZdistributes government funds to artsprojectsandorganisations, whilelocalgovernment funds distribute via city, districtandregionalcouncils.

Otherfundingcancomethroughvariousstreams, including gaming trusts, commercialphilanthropy, philanthropictrusts such as BayTrust, legacy fundssuch as Acorn Foundation, energyconsumer trusts such as TECT, socialenterprise, donations, membershipfeesandsubscriptions, tonameafew.

Government contracts usually provideonlypartialfundingforanorganisationto deliver specific services such associal or health support. At present, theCommunityCentrehasoptednottofollowthisstreamoffunding.

The lion’s share comes from elsewhereThelargestportionofouroperationalfunding comes from Lotteries, COGS,BayTrust andTECT, without whichwewouldnotsurvive.

Creative NZ funds have been grantedtohelpresourcetheMuralArtProject. This project combines art and localhistory to create a mural to tell thelocalstoriesofOurCommunity, andtobeautifytheWelcomeBayHall.

Tauranga City Council has continuedto supportvariousevents suchas theFamilyFunDayand theWelcomeBayFamilyMusicFestival.

Everynowand thenwearedelightedto accept a donation from additionalsources for various specifiedpurposes, from organisations suchliketheWelcomeBayLionsClub,BOPMasonic Charitable Trust, St George’sCentrepoint Trust, or Mr. Matt Barnes, who recently donated a movie-nightprojector, and even Internet NZ, whoprovidedthefundingtoimplementtheupcomingpublicinternetprojectattheCentre.

Free membershipBecause we are an incorporatedsociety we havemembers. While it iscustomarytochargeamembershipfeeorsubscription, atthispointintimethe

Centrehassetthesubscriptionfeeformembershipatzerocost.

All these different funding streams–smalland large–come together toempower the Community Centre tocontinuetoprovidethesocialsupport, advocacy services, and community-leddevelopment opportunities that helptowardsbuildingaresilientcommunity.

To all our funders we are extremelygrateful and appreciative of all thesupport and encouragement theyprovide to us. Our thanks go to everyoneofyouwhosupportOurCommunityCentre so that we can continue tosupport the ongoing locally-leddevelopmentofourcommunities.

Maungatapu underpass

Maungatapu underpassA busy start to this yearKeeping the construction programme on track whilst arranging for the removal of the asbestos contaminated material found in late-2015 has kept the project team busy during the start of this year.

Fortunately, the removal of the contaminated material is complete with the site getting full clearance in mid-March.

Transport Agency senior project manager, John McCarthy said that throughout the removal every precaution necessary was taken to ensure there was no risk to the public.

“No dust or asbestos fibres were found in the air monitoring during the clean-up and now testing of the site has shown that all known asbestos has been cleared”.

Trucks removing contaminated material and importing new fill were creating up to a 15 to 20 second delay as the trucks left the site.

“We’ve received a number of complaints about the impact on the traffic flow around the site, especially in the morning peak between 7am and 9am. We acknowledge that while the delay wasn’t long it was impacting drivers further down the traffic queue”.

“We appreciate the patience from the community” says Mr McCarthy.

The project team would like to reassure the community that they are aware of the traffic flow challenge and are doing regular traffic monitoring to measure the time it takes to travel past the site.

“It seems the traffic flow can vary considerably; some days there can be no queue and other days it can be quite bad. The good news is the timings of the trucks leaving the site have been adjusted and deliveries over winter will be minimal” says Mr McCarthy.

Do you suffer from asthma and backpain? Have you ever thought thatyour ‘under control’ asthma may becontributingtobackpain?Youmaybesurprisedtoseetheconnection.

Asthma is a chronic lung diseasecharacterisedbyepisodesofreversibleairflow obstruction and increasedresponsiveness of the airways to avariety of stimuli. The most commonis allergic asthma, which is spasmingof the airways induced by inhaledantigens.Itisusuallyfoundinchildrenwith a personal or family history ofallergicdiseasesuchaseczemaorhayfever.

Irritated nerves cause muscular tighteningThe sympathetic nerve supply to

the lungs originates from the firstsix thoracic vertebra (T1-6) and theairwaysfromvertebraT3-10.

Irritationofthelungsandairwaysfromasthma results in irritation of thesenerve pathways back to the spinallevelsfromwhichtheyoriginate.

This irritation causes stimulation ofnerve endings around the vertebrallevels in the surrounding soft tissuesand results in tightening of thesupportingmuscles.Asmusclestightenthey start to restrict underlying jointmobility and over a period of timeresult in stiff, tight movement in themidback.

Less flexibility, more injuriesBecause musculo-skeletal healthis reliant on good flexibility andmovement, as spinal areas becomerestricted due to tightening theyare less able to handle tension fromeveryday stresses such as work andsport.Thismakesthemmorepronetoinjuryandachesandpains, whichcanoccur either gradually or from trivialactivity.

Whenthemidbackbecomestightandrestricted this can then affect normalmobility in supporting areas such asthe neck, shoulders, and lower back.Osteopathycanhelpwithallof theseproblems using soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation and manipulation.Anosteopathalsogivesadviceonself-stretchesandpainmanagement.

“We found Nandi extremely helpful and she went out of her way to assist, regardless of timing or place. Our situation was rather desperate as we were moving into Tauranga having sold our property in New Plymouth. Nandi popped up with a smile and a willingness to help while we were considering our options and spent a large amount of her time to help us work through the issues of property purchase.”

- David and Lesley Tong

“We didn’t plan on listing our house but found a house we wanted that went to auction within two weeks. Nandi felt she could get ours sold in time for us to bid on the auction. My scepticism was allayed when not only did she get it sold within a few days she managed to get $15k over our asking price. Nandi was actually interested in helping us, not just getting a sale. I would recommend her without hesitation”

- Peter and Sara Hansen
