Choice Cotton Market Commentary 1 Tailgate oughts August 7, 2019 By Jeff ompson Choice Cotton Company 169 East Main Street Prattville, AL 36067 AUTAUGA QUALITY COTTON CHOICE COT TON The main topic of conversaon on the tailgate this week concerns the coon market’s unexpected 295-point loss last Friday, seling below 60 cents for the first me since 2016. Acons by both the US and China clearly indicated an escalaon in the ongoing trade war between the two countries. At the news, panic selling ensued sending the commodity and financial markets reeling. We will discuss this in much more detail in our next Market Commentary. Other conversaons from the tailgate center around the crop itself, as it so oſten does when entering the home stretch. I have never seen a crop which encompasses such a wide range of age and yield potenal. We knew from the start maturity covered a wide breadth from coon planted in mid-April to that double cropped and seeded in late June. Then, when considering most of our rainfall has been random isolated showers, yields are all over the board, as well. Southeast Condions Over the past several weeks, rain showers have been few and far between across the region. Coupled with extreme heat, one can easily understand how the Southeast crop has taken a step backward; a situaon we desperately needed to avoid in lieu of declining prices. To our good fortune, showers this past weekend were more numerous greatly benefing our younger coon. The oldest coon has already begun to cut out being kicked into high gear by these same weather condions. As a result, I feel certain we will have some coon harvested in September. U.S. Monthly Drought Outlook

Drought Tendency During the Valid PeriodValid for August 2019

Released July 31, 2019

Depicts large-scale trends basedon subjectively derived probabilitiesguided by short- and long-range statistical and dynamical forecasts. Use caution for applications thatcan be affected by short lived events."Ongoing" drought areas are based on the U.S. Drought Monitorareas (intensities of D1 to D4).

NOTE: The tan areas imply at leasta 1-category improvement in theDrought Monitor intensity levels by the end of the period, although drought will remain. The green areas imply drought removal by the end of the period (D0 or none).

This is very important becauseapplying such products prematurely can result in reduced yields and lower fiberquality. Percentopenbolls–When60percentofthebollsontheplanthaveopeneditsconsidered safe to apply defoliants. However, this year where it’s notuncommon to have different agesof cotton in the same field, I wouldrecommend using 75 percent open bolls to be safe.
