Students always come first at our campus. We’re nestled almost right in the centre of Gisborne city but have lots of green space for students and tutors to hang out and enjoy the sun.Our tutors are the best in the business – we seek out those who teach because they love it. About STAR @ Tairāwhiti Polytechnic

Tairāwhiti Polytechnic is excited to offer a new series of STAR courses for 2010. Our aim is to provide the students with an excellent learning experience and encourage them to explore their educational pathways. The STAR programme gives high school students the opportunity to have a taste of tertiary study, and more specifically, a chance to experience campus life at Tairawhiti Polytechnic, the region’s key tertiary provider.

STAR courses are sprinkled throughout the polytechnic’s entire progrmame portfolio, meaning business, computing and foundations, humanities and rural and trades. It makes it easy for students to really become part of the polytechnic for a short time and feel what it is to study tasters of courses they think may interest them in the future.

Within this prospectus, each course outlines dates, times, costs and essential course information for your perusal. Where it is needed, dates and times have been specified, otherwise there is a convenient amount of flexibility to ensure we meet your needs to the best of our abilities. There is also the opportunity to negotiate times with our STAR Coordinator, Kiwi Campbell (please note, Kiwi should be your key point of contact for all STAR/Gateway enquiries).

So what is STAR?

STAR is an acronym for the Ministry of Education’s Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource.It is something quite unique that is available to Kiwi teenagers in years 11 to 13 and at public high schools – it is not available for those at private schools, foreign fee-paying students or adult students.“The aim of STAR is quite clear,” says Tairāwhiti Polytechnic STAR Coordinator Kiwi Campbell, “this is in place to ease the transition for students from high school to further education, training or employment.”STAR is government funded for those who meet the criteria.

Community Liaison

Dee Kahukoti is a key link between Tairāwhiti Polytechnic and the wider community.The Community Liaison officer works with people of all ages to help them better know what the polytechnic is and how it can help them further themselves. “STAR is a great way of telling students that tertiary study is an option for all,” she says. “Many don’t think polytechnic or university can play a part in their futures, but this is a pathway that makes it possible.” Introducing students to tertiary education early enough normalises that option. “Studying becomes a good thing that can be accessed by all, and not just an opportunity for a special group.”The STAR programme is just one of the many jobs tasked to Dee. about life at the polytechnic• lets prospective students know about the many scholarships

available at the polytechnic• works closely with students to help them map their tertiary plan and

pathway• meets with career advisers, teachers and tutors to develop ideas and

provide information to assist them in helping their students make the right choices

• puts together a Taste of Tertiary to educate industry and others about the programmes and study pathways available at the polytechnic

STAR Coordinator

STAR Coordinator Kiwi Campbell has a passion for youth... and it shows. She took up her new position in late 2008 and has never looked back. “I love working with youngsters, so that is a real driver for me,” she says. “Working with the STAR programme opens educational opportunities to many who may not get it otherwise.” It’s a chance to help students be more responsible for their own learning by easing that transition between high school and tertiary education. She’s a busy mother of two active boys who enjoys her sport at top level. She’s held national and world titles in waka ama and played netball at provincial level for nearly a decade. Kiwi has taught at Tairāwhiti Polytechnic for six years now and remains as enthusiastic in her teaching as she did the very first day.

step 1Schools use the Prospectus to select the courses they wish to book students into.

step 2The School makes a course booking for their students with the Tairāwhiti Polytechnic STAR

Coordinator (TPSC). Bookings must be made four weeks prior to the course start date.

step 4Students attending a STAR course on

the Tairāwhiti Polytechnic campus are to report to the Information and Enrolment

Centre, Palmerston Road ,15 minutes prior to the course commencing. They will be directed to the appropriate classroom.

Schools will be invoiced for the number of places booked (whether or not the students

show). Payment should be received by Tairawhiti Polytechnic two weeks after

course commencement

step 5Tairāwhiti Polytechnic will distribute

student results to the School within two weeks of course completion.

step 3The TPSC will send the School a Memorandum of

Understanding and a Contract for signing within five days of the booking being made. The contract must be returned

to the TPSC two weeks prior to the course start date.

The TPSC will remind the school of the course start date one week prior.

feesSTAR fees are calculated as such:

$50 per hour (teaching contact hours only)+ $50 administration fee

(STAR fees do not include consumables or course related costs, as this varies with each course it needs to be

discussed with the TPSC)

GATEWAY have set fees between $400 - $500 per student

Tasters & Assessments have set fees between$100 - $400 per student
