Dear Professor:

Special Education in Contemporary Society is first and foremost a textbook about people—individuals who, in many ways, are very similar to their peers with-out a disability. Second, this book serves as a comprehensive introduction to the dynamic field of special education and the children and young adults who benefit from receiving a special education.

My intention in writing this book is to provide you and your students with a readable, research-based text that also stresses learning in inclusive settings and classroom application. By blending theory with practice, my aim is to provide preservice educators and practicing professionals with the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and beliefs that are so crucial to constructing learning environments that allow all students to reach their full potential.

I also want to portray the “human” side of special education. The field of special education is about children and their families—their frustrations and fears—but perhaps more importantly, it is about their accomplishments, successes, and triumphs. To me, special education is real. I personally live with it on a daily basis—it is my passion.

As technology allows us new ways to reach students, we’ve incorporated a new chapter on assistive technology written by an expert in the field, Emily Bouck, an associate professor at Michigan State University. Today’s teachers have the opportunity to embrace technology to create new learning opportunities for students, and the new chapter provides readers with the tools they need.

With my best regards,

Richard M. Gargiulo

The interactive e-book and our new student and instructor website, SAGE edge, includes video interviews with students, parents, and teachers, as well as video from real special education and inclusive classrooms created specifically by SAGE for Special Education in Contemporary Society in each chapter.

Students get more out of first-person case studies and stories than they do out of “facts,” so I appreciate the generous use of case studies throughout the text—they put a “face” on the information.

—Jenny Fererro, Palomar College

A People-First Approach

Chapter-opening vignettes in the categorical chapters, primarily written by children with disabilities and their parents, offer personal stories on the exceptionality studied in a specific chapter. Through these vignettes, students gain a firsthand, vivid account of the parents’ fears and frustrations, their accomplish-ments and triumphs, and the issues they face on a daily basis.

Author Richard M. Gargiulo uses language that focuses on the abilities and assets of students with exceptionalities throughout the book.

I appreciate the author’s person-centered approach and his statement that it is a book about people.

—Douglas E. Carothers, Florida Gulf Coast University

Students are provided context with sections on the history of special education in the United States. Understanding the historical conditions provides students with a foundation for understanding an ever changing and, hopefully, progressive field.

I like the book, especially the historical background, which is missing in so many special education textbooks (that is one of the two major reasons why I chose this textbook for my class).

—Johan W. van der Jagt, Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania

The First Person feature adds a human touch to the information students are learning. These stories, written by or about individuals with exceptionalities or their teachers, provide an up-close and personal encounter with children, adults, and families.

The First Person stories are fabulous ways to engage the students in their reading.

The Making Inclusion Work feature highlights special and general educators, offering candid perspectives and practical advice about providing services to students with special needs in inclusive settings.

Tools for Today

Suggestions for the Classroom boxes provide instructional strategies, tips, techniques, and other ideas.

Overall, I like this entire text, but some of my favorite features in the book are Insights, Suggestions for the Classroom, First Person, Making Inclusion Work, and Effective Instructional Practices. I teach an Introduction to Special Education course and typically have 60+ students in each class. It can be difficult to create a classroom community and do activities with so many students. However, I find that I often use one of the features I mentioned above as the foundation for small group discussions and activities.

—Penny Cantley, Oklahoma State University

The fifth edition includes video examples from inside inclusive classrooms so students can see inclusive education in action.
