Fr. Rich JakubikGod’s Role with Money, Wealth and Possessions

The parable from this week’s gospel of Luke pres-ents a man who has acquired hordes of stuff and yet something remains missing from his life. Despite his acquisitions and accumulations, his search for something more has eluded him. His life is full, but he is empty. His life should have been about more than acquiring money, wealth, and possessions. I thought it was inter-esting to note that the Old and New Testament contain over 2,350 verses about money and material posses-sions. The authors of the scriptures are commenting on our human tendency to become fi lled with more and more. Our natural inclination is to accumulate, to add, to upgrade, and to build up. However, someday we will all have to leave behind the life we have created for ourselves. I suspect at times we all know what it is like to be the man in today’s gospel, getting caught up in creating ma-terial security for ourselves and our loved ones. As peo-ple of faith, we may also sense that there is something lacking in our possessions. That inner restlessness, emptiness, and longing tell us there is something more to life. We are called to live from a security that may in-clude our savings and investments, but it must transcend these to include a life found in Christ. Our catholic faith reminds us that our primary investment must not be in our retirement, but in our family members, neighbors, and those who are in need. We do not earn or create our own life. The most important parts of life are those parts that we receive as pure gift. Ultimately, we are all stewards and caretakers of God’s life in the world, in each other and ourselves. We are called to possess without being possessed by our wealth. Christ alone makes it possible to let go, to die. We are called to surrender all that we are and all that we have and fi nd that we now lack nothing in Christ. We have inherited all that Christ is and has. The life we sought is now the life we live as a community of faith. Jesus asks us to risk it all, abandon our lives, and re-linquish control to God. That is what Jesus did and ex-pects from all those who follow him. As members of Holy Family Community, we are called to invest in ourselves, each other, and the world in the same ways in which Jesus invested himself: through love, mercy, compas-sion, justice, hope, courage, acceptance, truth, beauty and generosity. This is the wealth of God! This is the life God shares and invests in us through Jesus Christ. To be rich toward God begins with knowing that we already are God’s beloved treasure. There is freedom in that. It is the freedom to live rich toward others and the world. It reveals that there is enough. It declares my life to be

as important and valuable as yours. It eliminates the need for comparison with judgement of myself and oth-ers. Being takes precedence over having. As we refl ect upon stewardship and how we live it out in our own lives, we may want to ask ourselves some of these questions. • What resources, talents and abilities has God given me? • Do I use them in service to others? • How might I take the next step to become a more eff ective steward? • What qualities in the life of Jesus provide a model for living and an example of good steward-ship? • How might they compare to my own life and experience? • If I am to work to be an eff ective Christian stew-ard, with the help of God’s grace, what will it cost me in terms of personal sacrifi ce and hardship? • Am I willing to take the next step? • How am I reaching out to invite others to recog-nize their gifts? • What opportunities do I provide for them to em-ploy those gifts for the good of the community? • Am I viewing myself as a manager or trustee of what God's given me, or seeing myself as owner and controller of my stuff ? • Are there things that God would have me man-age diff erently if I acknowledged them as really being His? • Am I willing to commit my life to whatever God asks of me? Let us pray that our hearts may give glory to God and be focused on our relationships with Christ and one another: Heavenly Father, you know our hearts and our de-sires. If we are focused on accumulating the wealth of this world, change our hearts. We only need enough money in order to accomplish your will in our lives, and we know that we can trust you to give us that. You give us abundant life, God! What more can we ask for? We can’t take any of the treasures of the world with us when we leave, so why do we put so much of our energy toward it? Father, put passion in our hearts for loving one another and sharing the good news of Jesus with the people around us. That’s all that matters! Your glory, God: that’s all that we want to live for. Whatever blesses you: that’s what we want to put our energies behind. Give us courage to live against the grain of the world. Thank you for your grace and mercy in our lives. We love you! Amen.

Preparing for Next Week...Watch our weekly SCC refl ection @ https://www.youtube.com/user/HFInverness/videos.

Click on refl ections for Sunday Readings for 8-11-19 and listen to Karen Brady, SCC member, refl ect on the readings.

19th Sunday in Ordinary Time1. Like the Israelites in the book of Wisdom, how has your faith enabled you to endure and/or overcome hardships?

2. Our fi rst reading concludes with: “they were singing the praises of the ancestors.” Who in your family is often remembered and why is it important to keep their memory alive?

3. Sarah never doubted that she would conceive, “because she considered him faithful who had promised.” In the same way, do you trust in God’s promise even when it seems impos-sible?

4. Jesus tells us: “You must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.” Are you ready?

5. Our Gospel ends with: “From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be re-quired; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.” What more do you need to do?

SOCIAL JUSTICE QUESTIONWhat is it going to cost you to live the Gospel? Are you willing to sacrifi ce some posses-sions and daily distractions to acquire spiritual wealth? What challenges will you face?

Please note: The 4:00pm Sunday Mass will resume on August 18.

Eucharistic Minister TrainingThe moment of communion, when one member of the Body of Christ shares the Body of Christ (or the Blood of Christ) with another mem-ber of the Body of Christ, is an inti-mate, grace-fi lled moment of Divine Oneness. If you feel that the Lord is calling you to participate in this sa-cred ministry, we are off ering Eucha-

ristic Ministry training on Tuesday, August 27, 7:00-9:30 PM, in the church.

Parish Support & ServicesElectronic Giving continues to have a signifi cant positive impact on our

budgeting and cash fl ow. As we complete our 2018-19 fi scal year our total number of electronic givers is 540 and represents 40% of our Sunday contributions. While the number of electronic givers is up from 528 as of June 30, 2018 there are still

many parishioners who have not yet made a commitment to electronic giving. We ask you to prayerfully consider electronic giving and help us reach our new

goal for 575 for fi scal 2019-2020.

We want to thank all of our current electronic givers and remind you to grab an electronic giver card on your way in to church to place in the plate during the

collection. Let’s continue to be an example to everyone.

The Adult Faith Community... supports the mission of lifelong learning by providing educational, spiritual, and formational activities for the parish and the community.

Adult Faith

Beloved RetreatRegistration is open for the Beloved Retreat that will be on the weekend of November 1-3, 2019, at University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein. The Beloved Retreat is a lay led, comfortable, welcom-ing, open retreat that will give you a chance to be reminded that you are loved beyond comprehension by our God who wants to hold you through all joys and challenges of life.

Here are a few commonly asked questions about the Beloved Retreat:

Is the Beloved Retreat for married couples? The Beloved Retreat is for any adult who wants to attend! It is called the Beloved Retreat because it is focused on our Baptism and our understand-ing that we are BELOVED children of God. It is not a marriage retreat. It is for individuals, but married couples are also welcome to attend together.

What is the cost of the Beloved Retreat? The cost of the retreat is $195 per person. This is not the true cost of the retreat, but this low cost has been made possible by funding from last year’s Gala! We also have “Beloved Angels” who have contributed to a fund for those who request scholarship. So, Beloved is AFFORDABLE! P.S. Please support the Gala so this ministry can continue to be possible for all!

Who leads the retreat? This retreat is led by Dr. Terry Nelson-Johnson and another member of the Soul Play team. They have led many retreats through Old St. Pat’s Church in Chicago and have been developing teams outside of OSP to grow the ministry. The team for this retreat is also made up of Holy Family parishio-ners and staff members.

What are the rooms like at the retreat center? The rooms are all private, so you will be in your own room with your own bathroom if you attend alone. If you are attending with your spouse, you will be placed in a room together.

How do I sign up?Please contact Mary Whiteside at 847-907-3450 or [email protected] to have registration materials sent to you. You will be regis-tered in the order that registration and payment is received.

Human ConcernsLenten Social Justice Projects

Accumulative Total Raised $445,114Holy Family Parish fully embraces Catholic social teaching and the expectation as a faith-based community to support the poor and vulnerable in our midst. Our generous parish-ioners have walked the talk and concretely found a way over Lent to support and give a hand-up (not a hand-out) to Mission parishes and agencies that work with the poor and disadvantaged. Our fi nancial donations nourish sound programming, given their proven results, maintaining a path toward continued success.

Below is a recap of our most recent Lenten Social Justice Projects.

2019- Kino Border Initiative, Nogales, Arizona/Nogales, Sonora, Mexico and the Holy Family Fund – Respecting the human dignity of every individual is the fi rst and foremost Catholic social teaching. Our Lenten focus intended to walk a path along-side individuals and families striving to live a life that is productive, strengthening the family unit, and maintaining inherent dignity - all within an environment that is safe and nurturing. Simply stated, we hoped to humanize the immigration issue and to recognize its complexity, while emphasizing accompaniment of people on their journey. Donations totaled $73,848.

• Kino Border Initiative (KBI) promotes U.S./Mexico border and immigration policies that affi rm the dignity of the human person and a spirit of bi-national solidarity through direct assistance and education. Every year, thousands of migrant men, women and children are deported to Nogales, Sonora, Mexico or arrive in the city fl eeing from Central America. They often arrive with only the clothes on their backs and a small plastic bag that contains their belongings. They often do not know where to turn to receive a meal, fi nd shelter and to make a phone call. They also arrive emotionally and psychologically devastated, due to separation from their family members or the inability to work legally in the United States.

• The Holy Family Fund is a program provided by Catholic Extension in partnership with local Catholic Charities offi ces and other agencies providing case management. It provides emergency funds and services to a family after one or more of the undocumented income-earning adults in the home are detained or deported by the US government. The families contribute to the fund on a monthly basis ($20 for an individual, $30 for a couple). The participant becomes eligible by enrolling through an agency such as Catholic Charities and paying their monthly fee to the Holy Family Fund. After the needs of the family are as-sessed, the family may receive benefi ts up to $5000 per enrolled participant to help pay for rent or house payments, utilities, health care, etc. to maintain stability for the family.

2018 – Peaceful Pathways, Chicago, IL – We joined Cardinal Cupich’s Violence Prevention initiative targeting vulnerable, at risk youth in Chicago’s most troubled neigh-borhoods. Two highly successful programs were supported because they have impressive histories and proven results. They arm young people with the fortitude, skills and support needed to avoid the pitfalls of drugs, gangs, and violence. Holy Family raised $103,134 for Strong Futures on the south side of Chicago and Catholic Charities’ The Peace Corner Youth Center on the west side.

• Strong Futures fi rst began in June, 2016 as a pilot by the City of Chicago and Depart-ment of Family and Support Services (DFSS) in partnership with St. Sabina Church. Strong Futures addresses the needs of disconnected youth and young adults, between the ages of 18-28, who are justice-involved and/or have other barriers to stability, by connecting them with full-time employment. Strong Futures provides intensive coaching, comprehensive

Human Concerns

wrap-around services, and support that will enable them to stabilize economically, retain employment, and develop into productive, responsible contributors in society.

• The Peace Corner Youth Center is located in the Austin neighborhood on Chicago’sWestside. Originally established to provide the neighborhood youth a safe haven fromgang violence and drug dealing, The Peace Corner has grown into a community centerthat provides employment services, GED class referrals, basic skill development, recre-ational programming, legal counseling, mentoring, tutoring, and hope for all that are willing to take a step in a positive direction.

2017 – San Miguel Arcangel Church, San Miguel de los Banos, Cuba – This Lenten project worked in collaboration with Catholic Extension raising donations totalling $95,000. This enabled Catholic Extension to provide grant money to not only rehab San Miguel Arcangel Church, but also two chapels in the Diocese of Pinar del Rio – Las Ovas Chapel and Paso Real de San Diego Chapel. St. Rosendo Cathedral also received grant funding to complete their renovations. To date, all projects are moving along quite well as the both chapels are very close to completion and St. Rosendo Cathedral is moving ahead of schedule. San Miguel Arcangel is also moving along well as they continue to gather the materials needed for completion. Thankfully, all four structures received little damage from Hurricane Irma.

2016 – JOURNEYS|THE ROAD HOME – Holy Family Parish is a PADS site hosting lo-cal homeless clients registered through JOURNEYS on Sunday evenings, Oct through April. Raising $54,384 directly assisted JOURNEYS in their care and guidance of those who are homeless and those on the verge of homelessness. Critical services such as long-term case management, job counseling, minor medical care, mental health screenings, and most of all, securing permanent and stable housing are provided. A year following our Social Justice Project, they were able to secure housing for 135 clients, which was their greatest success rate up to that date.

2015 – St. Mary’s Mission Church, Red Lake Reservation, Red Lake, MN – St. Mary’s Mission Church and School, with a staff of 20 people, help to care for and edu-cate the Native American residents of Red Lake, MN. Their pastor, Fr. Jerry Rogers, feels by surrounding children and their families with the power of prayer, the living witness of Catholic beliefs and a strong education, the greater hope there will be for their future. Holy Family raised $70,030 to support a Staff Associate to sustain the education of the children attending the school in collaboration with Catholic Extension. Our gift assisted the school, which is experiencing increased enrollment, and a salary for an Outreach Director and Par-ish Nurse. On a sad note, in December 2017, the church was completely destroyed by a fi re (the school building was not impacted). Fr. Jerry Rogers is, as always, optimistic and he expressed hope that the church will rebuild. He said, “Out of the ashes will rise a new church.”

2014 - St. Paul Mission Church in McKee, KY – This was our fi rst collaborative eff ort with Catholic Extension Society. St. Paul is a small mission church in Appalachia (the only Catholic Church in that county) and serves a rural population. It cannot sustain the salary of a full-time priest. Rebecca Koury (now Rebecca Woods) is the Pastoral Associ-ate. Holy Family raised $48,718 to pay Rebecca’s salary and support the many ministries she administers in collaboration with Catholic Extension. Since 2014, Rebecca has instituted many programs benefi tting youth, adults and the greater community.
