At Dance Base, we believe that dance is for everyone and that’s why we strive to provide highquality, positive dance experiences both in our wonderful building and in the community.

This valuable work takes us all over Edinburgh and very often we work with people who may notnormally have the opportunity to dance. Our work also enables us to create strong partnershipswith other organisations in the areas of social justice and health and wellbeing.

I’m really proud of our ongoing connection with the Royal Hospital for Sick Kids, where we deliver gentle dance to small groups within the play areas and also one-to-one work at the bedsides. Our weekly Dance for Parkinson’s Scotland classes are continuing as well, with live music and a well-deserved cuppa for participants at the end of class.

We feel privileged to be in a position to offer dance to the many groups we work with.If you would like any more information or would like to get involved, please get in touch.

This season we are delighted to announce Christine Devaney of Curious Seed as the inspiringluminary leading our professional residency workshop week – with Bush Hartshorn as curatorfor the scratch night that accompanies the showcase.

As always, our free weekly showings on Friday afternoons are not to be missed. Let me drawyour attention to some guests who have not been regulars in the residency studio until now andwhose work you will be able to sample. They are: Kiara Pascale, a hip hop artist first seen withAshley Jack, who is making work for the elders of PRIME prior to their national tour; IsoldeSheridan with her poetic lyricism; and Tora Hed, also seen as part of a residency with AngusBalbernie. Also there’s the amazingly original Mamoru Iriguchi who is most certainly going todeliver a class with panache and who comes from a visual and performance art background. We are also very glad to welcome Paul Michael Henry to the house, as Japanese Butoh is not adiscipline for the fainthearted and he is, as far as I know, one of our only Scottish practitioners, inspired by the greatly admired Lindsay John.

Busy as ever – don’t miss a single thing. Like you would!

AUTUMN SHOWCASE WE ARE ALL JUST LITTLE CREATURES Sat 12 Nov I 20.00 I Tickets £5

Our bodies, our stories… A research project with Christine Devaney (Curious Seed)

This showcase will show the results of a week-long research project, which aims toexplore Christine’s ongoing interest in how our personal experiences and stories, stored in the body, inform the creative process, yet can transform what we create to reach out beyond the personal to connect in universal ways.

Over the week, Christine will share aspects of her creative practice – delving into the various ways she initiates, unlocks and searches for the material with which tocreate work. The focus will be on the process: improvising, responding, listening, writing, drawing, building material from these strategies.

The showcase will also feature performances curated by the Head of Catalyst,Bush Hartshorn.

TREATMENT ROOM

Dance Base exists to get more people dancing and to prove that dance is for everyone. For some people however, the cost of a dance class is something they simply don’thave to spare and that’s a barrier preventing them from ever giving it a go.

If you’d like to donate £6 and Pay It Forward, you can help someone to dance who otherwise wouldn’t have the chance. For every five classes donated, Dance Base will donate one more. Anyone who wants to take a free community drop-in class will then be able to claim a Pay It Forward session confidentially by [email protected] or speaking to a member of staff at reception. Only community drop-in classes will be available and the scheme is subject to availability of both donated class fees and spaces in the chosen class.

There is a blackboard in reception keeping track of the number of classes donated. For more information please visit our website.
