Travel Daily can reveal details of Delta Air Lines intentions to launch Down Under, thanks to a tip-off from a reader. The carrier is preparing itself for a Sydney launch date next Jul, with flights already uploaded in many CRS, incl Galileo & Amadeus. Flight displays in Galileo show Delta plans to compete head to head on the Los Angeles - Sydney route alongside United Airlines & Qantas, as well as V Australia. The Atlanta-based juggernaut is planning a daily operation using a Boeing 777-200LR jet between countries, with the traditional evening flight out of LAX at 22:40, arriving SYD at 06:40 (+2). Although there hasn’t been an announcement from Delta Air Lines about the new service to date, its believed the flights come as part of Open Skies discussions between Australia & US governments, with the flights waiting on regulatory approval from the IASC. The airline’s Sydney-based office was unable to provide TD with further details on the launch, nor does its website list Sydney as a destination. Delta signalled plans for a massive int’l expansion mid-last month (TD 13 Nov), when it said it would add new routes to Japan, Spain, Sweden, Czech Republic, Switzerland, and a number of African countries, but did not list Australia as an option. Delta is a lead member of the SkyTeam alliance and in Oct this year acquired Northwest Airlines. Competition on the lucrative Australia/US route is expected to be heated up on the route, with V Australia only yesterday launching a $1199 all inclusive airfare from east coast capitals to Los Angeles. A spokesperson from the Dept. of Infastructure & Transport was unable to comment on Delta’s application for flight services before TD’s deadline.

Passengers flying between BKK-Los Angeles will save the most,with the fuel surcharge droppingfrom US$175 to US$89.50.

RTW airfares go online IN an industry first, oneworld isnow offering multi-airline round-the-world tickets online. The alliance has announcedthat the popular Explorer farecan now be booked over the webusing its new online booking tool. The shift to online, meansoneworld also becomes the firstairline alliance to offer any of itspublic fares on the internet. The new tool, available atoneworld.com, allows agents orcustomers to plan, book and payfor their itinerary online. The intuitive new systemfeaturing a number of specialfeatures, including an itinerarybuilder that allows users to selectdestinations on an interactivemap, which will then displayflights with seats available foreach route on the selected date. The system also checks that allconditions are met, and thenprovides and instant price.

After payment, e-tickets for theentire trip are sent to thecustomer via email. The development of the newbooking tool was headed up byQantas on behalf of all theoneworld carriers. Rob Gurney, gm sales anddistribution, said the new systemsimplifies the entire bookingprocess, “saving customers a hugeamount of time and providingthem with far more flexibility inplanning their trips. “It will also reduce costs for ourmember airlines and free up timeof airline and travel agencyreservations agents to handleother tasks,” he added.

24 Russian travelagents killed AN “information gatheringvoyage” of 150 Russian travelagents visiting Israel has come toa tragic end, when a bus loadedwith agents crashed into a ravinekilling 24 passengers onboard. The group were travelling intwo buses to the Red Sea resortof Eilat when the accident occured. Reports say the coach was on anotoriously dangerous section ofroad near the Negev desert, whenthe vehicle overtook another buson a hairpin bend, lost controland plummeted 13 metres on to adry river bed. Many of the victims werethrown from the bus as it rolleddown the embankment. Another 33 travel agents on thevehicle were also hurt, with 23 ina serious condition The agents were employed by 5St Petersburg tour operators. Recently Israel and in particularEilat, has seen an invasion ofRussian tourists escaping theirharsh winters, benefiting from arelaxed visa regime between thecountries.

Hertz car-sharing HERTZ has announced plans toestablish a car-sharing business inNew York, London & Paris, whichit says will be the first global car-sharing program of its kind. The company is aiming to openlocations for its new ‘Connect byHertz’ club in 20 European andNorth American cities over thenext 12 months. “We expect to be the shareleader” said Hertz ceo MarkFrissora, adding he predicts a“phenomenally fast growth” forthe business. Hertz vehicles will be the mosttechnologically advanced in thefield, with features incl iPodconnectivity, bluetooth technology. Members will join online, bookonline & use smart-chip-enabledConnect cards to open and starttheir cars. Initially, the new business willnot require the assistance of atravel agent, but Frissora said anopportunity will become availableonce it begins marketing ‘Connectby Hertz’ to corporations. Frissora added that the clubreflects Hertz efforts to be seenas an environmentally sensitivefirm, with fewer cars on the road.

BUD security team BUDAPEST Airport has decidedto hire passenger securityscreeners from other EU countriesafter four days of striking by itsown security teams. The airport has made the moveto avoid further damage to itsreputation, to improve thecurrent situation for passengers. The screeners are fully licensedin the EU and Hungary, and areemployed with a definite workcontract, for only as long as thetraffic needs require them.

SQ heads to Kuwait SINGAPORE Airlines hasannounced from 15 Mar it willlaunch a four times weeklyservice to Kuwait. SQ exec vice pres. marketing &the regions, Huang Cheng Eng,said the carrier sees “new tourismpotential is being tapped” astrade and investmestmentopportunities rise in the region. The flight will operate via AbuDhabi using a Boeing 777-200 jet. The move will also see SingaporeAirlines operate flights betweenits Singapore base and Abu Dhabidaily. From 12 Mar, flights to Cairo viaDubai will also be increased fromthree to four times each week.

Amadeus GDSexpansion TECHNOLOGY and distributionsolution company, Amadeus, hasannounced it now allows agentsto book 80,000 hotels - thenumber of hotels now in itsGlobal Distribution System (GDS). The firm says significant growthhas been seen in the number ofindependent hotels and smallerchains joining Amadeus GDS. Recent additions include over500 hotels via hotel-net.it, 200Cuban hotels via an agreementwith the Cuban Ministry ofTourism and other properties inEurope, India and China.
