CE 16Fluid Mechanics for Civil Engineers II

    Computational Laboratory Exercises

Direction: Solve the following pipe-flow problems. Show complete solution and state assumptions made, if any. You can do it

individually or by pair. Deadline is 9am, October 21, to be passed at my office table in MH233C. I will not accept late submissions.

    1. Water (=1.004 x 10 -6m2/s)is being delivered through a 150-

mm commercial pipe (= 0.045 mm) from a tank of pressure p1

to a tank of pressure p2 equal to 40 kPa at the rate of = 0.1

m3/s. Flow can be assumed as steady and uniform. The minor

loss coefficients are also shown in the figure. What is the

pressure p1 at the left tank?

    2. Water (=1.004 x 10-6m2/s) iscirculated from a large tank,

through a filter, and back to the tank as shown in the figure.

Pumps rated capacity is 70 kW at 70% efficiency. Determine

the flow rate through the filter.

    3.Find the required pipe diameter for an oil with r=950 kg/m3 and n=2 x 10-5m2/sto flow at least Q= 0.342 m

    3/s in a 100-

m long commercial pipe of roughness 0.06mm.

    50 m of 250-mm

    dia. Pipe with e/D =
