Message from the Pastor
Taking a Sabbatical ….
When we accepted the call to serve here at American Lutheran, the
church committed to give us a 6-week sabbatical after 7 years of
ministry. Sabbaticals are a common practice for pastors serving in
congregations -- a dedicated time away intended to refresh, renew, and
redirect pastors’ spirits and souls and to avoid burnout. We took our first
sabbatical in 2012...travelling as a family and being renewed through the
beauty of God’s creation in our National Parks as well as continuing
education opportunities.
It has now been another 7 years (can you believe it’s 14 years already?!),
and we are planning our next Sabbatical this summer. We are planning it
differently this summer. Pastor Matt will leave on Sabbatical June 1 and
be gone for 6 weeks. Pastor Janine will leave on July 1 and be gone for 6 weeks. Our sabbatical will overlap July 1-
15. Those two Sundays, Pastor Amber Remillard will be leading the congregation in worship. Our sabbatical time
will end with our trip to Holden with the group from our congregation August 12-16.
This means, Pastor Janine or Pastor Matt will be available most of the summer, even though it is our Sabbatical
year. However, it also means that you will only have part time coverage this summer from each of us. That means we
will be leading worship and be available when needs arise, but will not be in the office much this summer. Mark and
Scone Bender have offered to provide help as needed. (Thank you, Benders!)
We pray that this is a renewing time for us both, in our time spent together, as well as our time pursuing renewal
individually. We covet your prayers...and we will keep you in ours. Thank you for your faithful support for us and for
our family and our ministry together. We are blessed to be in this place with you all!
Pastor Janine and Pastor Matt

Ten year old Eli's life is a nightmare filled with neglect and abuse. One of the many children placed into foster care each year, he struggles with his
emotions while longing for the love & approval of a family. Meanwhile, to impress a potential new client, investment advisor Ken Matthews signs up to be a camp counselor and gets paired with Eli. At this unique and special summer camp designed to help draw children out of their dark pasts, Ken & Eli slowly learn about each other and what it means to begin to trust. Based on true stories of real-life campers at Royal Family Kids summer camps, audiences will be inspired and find hope in the midst of the most difficult circumstances. Note: This will be our last movie night before all the summer activities
We all love seeing Spring arrive. And it’s time to begin gardening. We need volunteers to keep our lawns trimmed, please sign up in the narthex – just one week or several. We have the equipment and training available. Many thanks!
BEAUTIFUL FOOD BANK QUILT You could win this beautifully designed 86x96” quilt! Thank you for your donations at only $1 per ticket or 6 tickets for $5. If you would like to make a donation of $250 to the food bank, you can choose a quilt from those on the pews in the sanctuary. Our goal is $1,500 this year. Talk to Joy Peralta 509-671-1398. Our Quilters are always busy and they’re always looking for colorful fabrics to use. As you’re enjoying yard sales this spring and summer, please keep your eyes open for 70x90 inch flat sheets in very good condition that can be used for quilt backs. All your fabric contributions make this possible!

Senior Sunday is May 19th Let’s celebrate their accomplishments and bright futures! 2019 graduates are Cydni Lewis and Racine Balow
Thank you for praying for us and our coworkers in
Mozambique in the past month. Work has continued at Karanda as usual while many of these areas lie devastated in structural damage, cholera infestation, and lack of food/supplies. Other TEAM
members have traveled to the base there for rebuilding and relief work over the past month. We
are grateful to be located just over a mountain range and escape the most serious dangers of the storm, and that our coworkers were spared of any
bodily injuries.
Blessed be the Name of the Lord! Please continue to support
Aaron and Stacy Zabriskie, our missionaries in Zimbabwe by praying and staying in touch.

For Those moving through the grieving process
“The one who has no time to mourn
has no time to heal." John Donne
Think of your grief as a
wilderness with unfamiliar
and often brutal
surroundings. To find
your way out, the trail will
often be arduous and you
may at times feel
hopeless, but trust that
you will find your way out
of the wilderness of your
grief and you will learn to
make the most of the rest of you precious
life. Remember, God has you, God holds you, and
God won't let you go.
For those who are grieving deep losses in their
life -- we have resources available on the
information table in the narthex (where the
coffee and goodies are after church). There are
books and pamphlets to support you as you
journey through your grief. Please take them
home or share them with someone who might
need them. May you be accompanied by grace in
your wilderness.
If you can provide special music during the summer worship services, please contact Nancy and Larry Sauer. We enjoy worship music from young and old and everything in between. If you prefer to play an instrument, that’s good too!
