Companies operate their assets against a never ending challenge from their stakeholders to find the most cost effective way of maintaining reliability and preserving the integrity of assets while fulfilling the requirements of the regulatory framework. Technological developments especially digitisation, as well as the advent of big data offer the potential to optimise the management of assets. This needs to be set against the context of an ageing asset base, skill shortages and a loss of experienced staff from the industry.

ConferenceThe conference will focus on exploring opportunities for the application of emerging technologies to improve the effectiveness of integrity management, the goal being to improve integrity, safety and reliability while reducing cost.

Industry speakers will describe where they are on this journey, how and why they got started, the challenges they have faced and how they are using technology to improve the way in which they are managing risk.

Some of the topics the conference will cover include:

− Integrity management / reliability improvement challenges and how they are being overcome − How new technology can reduce compliance costs − How remote sensing is improving inspection safety − Integrity in the digital age

Leaders from process industries will provide details of how technology is becoming an integral part of their manufacturing strategy.

About Chemical Industries Association (CIA)The CIA is the UK’s leading trade association for the chemical and allied industries. The UK chemical industry is the manufacturing industry’s number one exporter with an annual trade surplus of almost £5Billion and £2Billion capital investment. To remain competitive and be sustainable in the longer term the industry needs to continuously improve its process safety and manufacturing performance.

Conference dinnerThe optional complimentary conference dinner, held on the evening before the conference and is an opportunity to meet the speakers in a more informal atmosphere.

Who should attendThis conference provides practical feedback for the development and improvement of maintenance and asset integrity from leading operating companies.

The conference will therefore have relevance for:

− Maintenance and integrity managers − Company directors − Senior operations staff − Environmental, health and safety professionals − Shutdown and turnaround managers

PriceMember of CIA:£275 + VAT (including a complimentary conference dinner)

Non-member:£300 + VAT (including a complimentary conference dinner)

09.30 Welcome and introduction ABB

09:35 Risk reduction across the coal fleet on run to closureRunning to closure presents many challenges to the coal fleet, with maintaining safe operation and plant availability being key. These challenges are set against an increasingly competitive market and the necessity to streamline outage inspection and maintenance activities where practicable. Examples from both Cottam and West Burton A will be discussed where standard approaches to address problems on pressure systems and steam turbines have been challenged, resulting in significant cost savings and with no detriment to the safe operation and availability of the stations. The optimal use of technical support providers will also be discussed, from the perspective of resolving plant problems and provision of independent assessments when necessary. The examples illustrate how the remaining fossil fired stations in service will have to consider new approaches when they are inevitably faced with similar challenges.

Andy Morris,Chief Mechanical Engineer - Coal, Gas and Renewables, EDF Energy

10:10 How to introduce a reliability focussed cultureIf only it could be like chewing gum on your shoe – once there, always there. If achieving reliability/integrity improvement isn’t hard enough, try making it sustainable. A look at 5 years in a challenging journey of improvement involving all staff, key associates, several consultants, highs and lows. And, as the journey continues, the hope that it is sticking.

Adrian Davidson,Reliability Team Leader, andKerstin Ballantyne, Reliability Coach,Petroineos

10:50 Tea / coffee and networking

11:10 Asset management optimisation: how to implement a sustainable solutionMany businesses including TATA have initiated and undergone asset management transformation programmes in the past, only to see the hard-won gains and improvements slip away. What needs to be in place to ensure the programme is sustainable? TATA STEEL Strip UK has recently embarked on a programme that amalgamates operational excellence and asset management in order to achieve a sustainable outcome. The presentation will outline the deliverables that need to be in place to deliver that desired asset management strategy.

Michael Power,Asset Management Specialist TATA Steel

11:50 Learning from maintenance performance factorsPresents the findings of a recent research study that reviewed the use of maintenance performance indicators. Discusses the value of the indicators (for example in tracking backlogs) and what they can tell you about asset integrity (for example the condition of safety critical elements).

Lee Allford, Process Safety and Decommissioning Manager, Energy Institute

12:30 Lunch and networking

13:30 Workshop: including group feedback - The impact of digital technologies on asset integrity - Asset integrity management related research and development - Ensuring an ongoing supply of trained and competent personnel to deliver asset integrity

15:00 Tea / coffee and networking

15:20 Managing ageing assets in a digital ageMany operators are faced with the challenges of managing the primary containment envelope of plant and equipment on assets installed many decades ago. This presentation will take you through some of the experiences of the author in managing such issues.

Stuart Turner, Principal Engineer - Pressure Systems, BOC

15:50 The digital revolution of cloud-based inspection reportingAs the oil and gas industry looks for transformational ways to optimise traditional inspection results, PDF reports have become distinctly time-consuming to analyse, navigate and compare. Asset owners and operators are now harnessing the power of new cloud-based software and data management tools to visualize assets and track and monitor known defects over time. Using case studies, Cyberhawk will discuss how energy super majors are moving to digital inspection reports.

Marc Whitton,Business Development Manager - Europe,Cyberhawk
