Why is this importantIt’s estimated that thousands of people refused to evacuate New Orleans in advance of Hurricane Katrina because they weren’t willing to leave their dogs or cats behind and there were no shelters supporting animals. After some of those who weren’t willing to leave their animals died and pictures of stranded dogs and cats were displayed to the american public, disaster management and relief organizations started to incorporate pets into their plans.
