What You May See in Your Course• These students will mainly be part-time and have other responsibilities—

work, family, life—which complete for their time and attention.

• Students who pursue their education online are generally highly-motivated, especially in the case of adult students who make a conscious decision to pursue their education and have tied that education to a life goal.

• Students who are new to online education may not always be aware of the demands of learning in this way (ex. logging into ANGEL often, participating in course discussion forums). It’s good practice for instructors to reach out to students who may appear in inactive in the course or who do not turn in assignments on time. Instructors can check student activity by running reports in ANGEL.

• Students located around the world.

What Has Happened in Other Courses• Military students located around the world may be deployed on a mission at a

moment’s notice and may not have access to the internet. Thus they may need more time to complete an assignment.

• Students who have a family emergency and may need an extension for an assignment. (Some of these students are responsible for taking care of children and aging parents.)

• Some students may also ask for more time on assignments or understanding for course inactivity because they have been busy with work projects or may be traveling for work.

• Student message from IST 110 that just came in today: “This is my first semester at PSU, my first attempt at online learning, and my first time in any structured learning in over 15 years.”
