A TALE OF TWO GIRLS

+Learning Intention

To understand the world we live in from a different perspective.

To imagine what it would be like to live in someone else’s shoes

+Success Criteria

I can compare two lives and imagine if you were in their shoes.

I can identify what poverty is and who it affects.

+Getting Knowledge Ready

We are about to watch a short clip called “A Tale of Two Girls”

What do you think this will be about?

What do you know about different countries around the world?

What do you know about how people live in different countries?

On 3 different post it notes, answer the above questions and put them on the

butchers paper around the room under the correct heading

+Compare and Contrast

Differences

Similarities

Differences

Using half a page - DRAW UP A SIMILAR DIAGRAM IN YOUR

BOOK

+A Tale of Two Girls

http://www.who.int/features/2003/11/en/

After watching that clip fill in the diagram/graphic organiser that you drew up in your book

Under the diagram, list 2 questions that came to your mind when you were watching it.

+NOW IMAGINE…

how your life would be different if you were born in Sierra Leone like Mariam.

Write a paragraph under your two questions (same page as the compare and contrast) about how life would be if you were in someone else’s shoes (like Mariam)

+IMAGINE THERE’S NO COUNTRIES

Think back to the song ‘Imagine’ and the phrase ‘Imagine there’s no countries’.

If this was the case - What do you think would be different in the Tale Of Two Girls? (discuss in table groups)

+NOW IMAGINE THERE WAS NO POVERTY…

What would the world look like?

When you think of Poverty what do you think about?

Have you ever had your mum say you can’t have something?

How did you react?

+FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS

On a sheet of paper draw up 5 lines (using a ruler) that are a ruler width apart.

Line 1 – Heading – ‘1st World Problems’

On the next 4 lines I want you to write down four things that have happened to you in the past week that when you think mindfully about it, you can see that it is a ‘1st World Problem’

Leave a small gap and do the same as above with the 5 lines and put the heading ‘3rd World Reality’

Now list 4 things that may be a reality for a child your age living in a 3rd World County.

+What can we do?

In your table groups discuss what we can do as individuals, a group, a school, community to help those living in poverty.

Remember poverty is also in our own backyard as well.

+Review

Describe poverty in 13 words.

What learning actions did you use today?
