unit president, Bianca Smith and all the ladies at Smith Chapel truly made us feel that their home church was our home church. After Reverend Yolanda Colton-Jones served us a Holy meal, the ladies served up a delicious and plentiful lunch and we enjoyed some United Methodist Women fellowship to end the afternoon.
We would like to thank our guest speakers from Twin Cedars. Kaycee Wilson-Recruiter Specialist for Youth
&Family Services talked about becoming a foster parent. The first step to becoming a foster parent is to attend an information session. And then having the four capacities for caring: commitment, adaptability, responsibility and empathy. Candi Gibson-Coordinator of Safe Families for Children talked about a movement of compassion. This is a national movement partnering with churches to temporarily care for children, while strengthening families in crisis. Safe Families for Children goals are preventing child maltreatment, deflect at-risk families from entering
the child welfare system, and stabilizing and strengthening families in crisis. And this work by safe families provides a loving, temporary home for children whose parents are in need. Twin Cedars contact information-www.twincedars.org
Now is the time to set your goals for next year. Unit presidents think about looking at the annual Local Unit Report and, with your members, set goals for the Reading Program and for mission giving. If you need a copy of the Local Unit Report, just email or text me and I will get you a copy. These goals are a way to “stretch” us in mind and heart. Set your sights higher this year and have some check points along the way to assess how you are doing. Then, maybe this time next year, you’ll have a greater sense of accomplishment, pride in the fact that you have funded help and hope for women and children who need it and have more expansive knowledge through

The beginning of Advent, the beginning of the Holidays and the beginning of me being President of the Lagrange District UMW. Some things are familiar, some are new with challenges, not anxiety. A reminder of these challenges is reiterated in a book from the UMW Reading program, titled "Do Hard Things," by Alex and Brett Harris. It's written, one standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back to back and conquer, three is even better, for a triple braided cord is not easily broken. Ecclesiastes 4:12 NIV

We have a lot of work to do and we can do it together with God's help. For in Philippians 4:13, we are constantly reminded, "I can do everything God asks me to with the help of Christ who gives me the strength and power."Let's come together on February 8, 2020 at Fayetteville First for the Lagrange/Griffin District Mission U from 9:30-1:30. A light lunch will be provided. Please register by January 21,2020. This is an opportunity to involve your churches in collaboration and competence as we study from the two mission studies: Gospel according to Mark led by Mary Ann Brannon and 150 Years of Christian Women led by Cindy Campbell.
Tami Kemberling, Vice President

On November 9th fifteen LaGrange District United Methodist Women took a trip to Montgomery, AL to learn more about racial justice.
We spent the morning touring the Legacy Museum which is located on a site where tens of thousands of slaves were warehoused, auctioned just a block away, and then sent away through docks on the Alabama River or a nearby rail station. The Equal Justice Initiative started by Bryan Stevenson has conducted extensive research into the story of how slavery has evolved. When slavery was abolished by the Emancipation Proclamation tactics changed for keeping blacks out of mainstream America. Convict leasing, lynching, and other forms of racial terrorism forced millions of blacks to flee for safety to the north and west. Civil rights progress in the 1960's did not end the injustice. The tactics just evolved into our current criminal justice system where mass incarceration devastates the black community mostly hidden as the “Drug War” and “Get Tough on Crime” rhetoric

After lunch we toured the National Memorial for Peace and Justice with over 800 six-foot monuments each representing a county where documented lynching’s occurred. Names of thousands of lynching victims are inscribed on these huge columns. Unfortunately, each county in our district is represented in this memorial. It was a disturbing day to learn the truth about racial injustice in our country, but it is truth all of us need to face and use to make change from this point forward. The United Methodist Women's Charter for Racial Justice acknowledges that "racism is a rejection of the teachings of Jesus Christ" and encourages us to work for a more inclusive society. I know there are fifteen women in our district wanting justice. We shed tears over what we learned, had frank discussions about harsh realities, and mourned the tremendous number of senseless losses that have too long been swept under the rug. Apartheid in South Africa and the Holocaust in Germany have been acknowledged and memorialized for the world to see, but this dark shadow of American history must be lifted by the truth if equal justice is to be truly experienced. There is far more information than we could wrap our minds and hearts around in just one day. I encourage each of you to make this disturbing but enlightening trip on your journey to embrace equal justice for all.
