President Desk

As we dig into the year 2020, we must definitely dig-in.  Change is occurring and change can be good.  Historically we can look back over our 150 years and realize that change has boosted us forward.  It rarely takes us backwards, but it can divide us.  Division is what the world is about, but not Christ.  Our goals do not change; how we get there may or must.   Following this line of thinking, the District, Conference and Units are reviewing our Standing Rules each year and suggest you do the same.  The LaGrange District Executive committee met after partnering with the Griffin District for Mission U at Fayetteville First.  We are attempting to come together more often with our sisters in Christ, sharing and learning together.  We accomplished this by studying the Gospel of Mark and Radical Discipleship and Women United for Change:150 years in Mission.

UBUNTU is what we now call our service project.  The term means humanity and is often translated as "I am because we are," or in a more philosophical sense, "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity."  Desmond Tutu notably popularized this term when he was chairman of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission.  Our goals know no geographical or spiritual boundaries.  In our reading program, The Book of Joy, by Desmond Tutu, reminds us that we all have anxiety, but stress can be turned into challenges.  We, as United Methodist Women members, are challenged.   Our Ubuntu Project will be May 16, visiting and working at the UMCOR warehouse in East Point.  This is a relatively new facility and closer to us than the other facilities.  We hope to learn more about how UMCOR works. Please send any photos or write ups on what your units are doing for their service projects to our Communications chair, Melissa Martin at [email protected] And keep reading and sharing the Response magazine.  It contains many great ideas as well as knowledge of what United Methodist Women is all about, connecting the world. As we dig into the year 2020, may you continue to be receptive to and productive with God's blessings in your life.  In Christian love,Tami Kemberling, President

Leading Productive Lives

If any of you are like me, I often feel my life is dictated by schedules, clocks and calendars. Calendars that fill up so quickly that free time (did I just say “free” time) seems minimal. I know we all lead “busy” lives, but are we leading “productive lives,” the kind Jesus would call us to lead? Titus 3:14 says: “Our people must learn to do good by meeting the urgent needs of others; then they will not be unproductive”.

If we all stop for a moment to examine our lives, to what are we devoting our time? How much of it is productively spent on meeting the “urgent” needs of others?

Because “Social Action” is a core value of UMW, our organization focuses on important social issues. Did you realize we are involved in Interrupting the School to Prison Pipeline, Stopping Human Trafficking, Securing a Living Wage for All, Paid Family and Medical leave, Climate Justice, United Methodists in Advocacy and Action, Criminal Justice Reform, Healthcare and Voices for Georgia’s Children … and that is just a partial list of our involvement.

If you would like more information about any of these issues you can go to [email protected] or simply goggle: UMW and the issue you would like to know more about (such as UMW and the School to Prison Pipeline). Also, please read any emails you receive from Jessica Godfrey, our NGUMW Social Action Coordinator. Jessica does an excellent job of staying on top of issues and offers many different opportunities for personal involvement for change.

If all our UMW members worked together, what a difference we would make in the lives of others. If you or your unit are not currently involved in any of these issues, I urge you to consider becoming involved. When we band together as brothers and sisters in Christ, we can do what it says in Mathew 19:26: “But Jesus beheld them and said unto them: with men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible”.

United Methodist Women let’s “find” the time to be involved, productive members.

And while we are at home on Monday, we can watch the documentary, "Pushout," on PBS starting on March 16th.  Pushout is a book on the UMW reading program about how Black girls are much more often and more severely than white girls.  They are being pushed out of the educational system and into the juvenile court system.  This is the School to Prison Pipeline that United Methodist Women is fighting to disrupt.  Please share this information and this link with the members of your unit:https://www.colorlines.com/articles/new-doc-exposes-how-schools-pushout-black-girls
