TALES OF FARM FRIENDS

GOLDFISH IN A TROUGH

My brothers and I had a few goldfish that we kept in a bowl and enjoyed watching. One day we decided to put the goldfish outside in a trough that was used to provide water for Betsy, the milk cow.

Friends who came out from the city to visit our farm were surprised that Betsy didn’t swallow the goldfish when drinking. But of course she didn’t, because when cattle drink, they suck the water from the surface, so it was easy for the fish to stay out of her way.

One winter the temperature dropped unusually low overnight, freezing the trough water. My brothers and I ran to the barn to see what had happened to the goldfish, and were sad to see them frozen in place. We were sure they were dead.

Knowing Betsy would need water to drink, Dad ran some fresh water into the trough, which slowly thawed the ice.

And guess what happened to the goldfish? After the water thawed, the goldfish started to swim—they were alive!

One of the marvels of God’s creation!

“God created great whales,

and every living creature that

moves, which the waters brought

forth abundantly” (Genesis 1:21 AKJV).
