Big Data?

Page 4: Talking dinner GPDR

Big Data - Volume

The vast amounts of data generated every second. Not Terabytes, but Zettabytes or Brontobytes.

Page 5: Talking dinner GPDR

Big Data - Velocity

The speed at which new data is generated and the speed at which data moves around.

Page 6: Talking dinner GPDR

Big Data - Variety

The different types of data we can now use, 80% of the world’s data is unstructured

Page 7: Talking dinner GPDR

Big Data - Veracity

The messiness or trustworthiness of the data. The volumes often make up for the lack of quality or accuracy.

Toepassingen

Page 12: Talking dinner GPDR

Niets nieuws?

Page 17: Talking dinner GPDR

Trends in education

In a few years’ time, primary classrooms will be larger and consist of a more diverse population, differing in educational ability levels, special needs, and cultural backgrounds. It will become increasingly difficult to provide children in the classroom the attention they need and the workload of teachers will increase substantially (Vissers, 2016).

A decline in new teachers and a large group of retiring teachers, results in a shortage of thousands of teachers in The Netherlands.

Robots in education

New technology provides important tools for modern education and can: “provide unique learning experiences to students and improving their learning” (Prentzas, 2013, p169).

One of the most promising new technologies is the robot tutor, which is especially useful as support for educating individuals or small groups (Konijn, Zarchin, & Hoorn, 2017; Reich-Stiebert & Eyssel, 2015).

Page 42: Talking dinner GPDR

Robots in education

The robot serves as tutor or a learning companion. In this role, the robot appears to be perceived by children as a peer rather than a tool and – according to the children - the humanoid robots even seem to establish a kind of friendship-relation with the children (Leite, Martinho, & Paiva, 2013).

Page 43: Talking dinner GPDR

Ethical challenges

Ethical challenges arise now robots are entering into the social domain and developed in a wide range of roles, such as education, personal care, and companionship (Lin, Abney, & Bekey, 2011).

Page 44: Talking dinner GPDR

Ethical challenges - Example 2017

Page 45: Talking dinner GPDR

● In the field of robot ethics, three theories prevail toinsure the ethical behaviour of robots: Deontology, Consequentialism, and Virtue ethics.

Page 46: Talking dinner GPDR

However, prominent scholars argue that none of these theories alone is sufficient for applying robots in society and a hybrid approach which focuses on specific roles is needed (Abney, 2014; Wallach, 2010).

Recently, Sharkey (2016) identified four main ethical concerns regarding robot teachers, namely: 1) privacy, 2) attachment, 3) deception and loss of human contact, and 4) control and accountability.
