Whichever you choose, Asia’s favourite playground has something for you. But how does this Island of attractions and parties fair on the sustainbility scale? Let’s find out. GreenA was commissioned to conduct an environ- mental sustainability feasibility study on Sentosa Island, which has an area close to 5 square kilome- tres. Environmentally Sustainable Designs A CFD Simulation for the open spaces was conduct- ed to assess the inter-blocking of wind within the selected locations. A shading analysis ofall buildings to understand how the sun moves across the different buildings on the island was also carried out. These studies will determine should there be needs for improvements, based on the point-by-point Green Mark Scheme criteria for districts. Exploring Green Technology Apart from being Asia’s favourite playground, what visitors may not know is that Sentosa is also well positioned to be a “living laboratory” for test-bed- ding and green innovations. Research institutions, universities and companies are welcomed to partner with Sentosa to experiment and test out suitable green ideas on the island and one such institution was the National Technological Univer- sity (NTU). Energy Research Institute @ Nanyang Technologi- cal University (ERI@N) has extended its research activities on Sentosa by upscaling its project, following the successful trial of the first low-flow tidal turbine tested in a live sea environment in Singapore. Environmental and Heritage Conservation The island, home to some 27 carefully-persevered heritage trees and over 30 conserved buildings also houses several developments already certified Green Mark, spanning a total GFA of 80,900m2. Keeping 60% of the island open and green was also part of the Sentosa 10-point Sustainability Plan. The Sentosa Development Group (SDG) also works with the National Heritage Board to conduct tours of the Mount Imbiah Battery for the Battle of Singapore programme. Guided by military historian Peter Stubb, participants were transported back in time through the underground passages. Green Transportation Green transportation modes are favoured with visitors being encouraged to leave their vehicles on the main island. Keeping transportation carbon footprints low, visitors can arrive into the island by foot via the canopy sheltered Sentosa Broadway Walk from Vivocity Shopping Mall. Once there, free public shuttle buses areavailable. Vehicles for daily maintenance works on the island also run on electricity. 80% of the roads are also shaded by the extensive tree lined greenery, optimizing micro-cli- matic landscaping. Recycling on the Island SDC collaborated with the National Environment Agency (NEA) to study the impact of good recycling bin designs on improving recycling rates and reducing contamination of recyclables. Internally, SDC staff were also encouraged to increase recycling efforts. In addition to the usual plastic, paper and can recycling bins, electronic waste recycling bins has been deployed under the RENEW programme. Seemingly, Sentosa island already has numerous greening programmes and implementations. Tasked to identify improvement points, GreenA is looking into proposing the involvement tenants to green up their operations conducting eco-audits and churning out recommendation plans for shop tenants and restaurants on the island and/ or the potential of on-site recycling for food and landscape waste, amongst others. The next WorldGBC Congress will be held in Stockholm in October 2016. Protocol Development In previous years, we developed eco-audit protocols for all pre-schools, primary as well as secondary schools in Singapore. This year, apart from enhancing existing protocols, we developed protocols for Institutes of Higher Learning, food establisments and retail shops. Education Partner GreenA provides a reputable voice in green building and sustainability education. We are also partnering up with USGBC for the Global Coalition Green Schools Programme. Technical Expert For the fourth year running, GreenA has been appointed the Green Knowledge Partner for the Channel NewsAsia Luminary Awards. GreenA is also part of the Joint Technical Committee for the Singapore Environmental Achievement Awards. GBC Incubator GreenA plays an instrumental role in establishing the Tanzania Green Building Council and other GBCs. Knowledge and Resource Library GreenA works with publications to development content for topics of sustainability. We work to develop comprehensive guidebooks on energy efficiency, booklets on green saving tips for students, to working with magazines and newspapers for their features. Training and Education Collaborating with SEC, GreenA will be conducting a series of trainings on how green product labelling assists in Green Building Certification(LEED and Green Mark). GreenA has also trained professionals in Malaysia for the GreenRe Manager course. At the end of the workshop, participants had to carry out a case scenario of “how to best green a USD100m development, given a 1% increase budget allocation” by adopting a holistic approach involving all departments. 28th April 2016- ‘SMART’ in general has been the buzzword in buildings and cities. The presentation explored the right type and combina- tion of smart elements that provide them with the greatest return on their investment- we need to find the middle ground between motivations and abilities of systems. Apart from the core business know-hows, individuals should also develop influencing skills in order to drive change. Held at the National Library, Singapore, GreenA Senior Partner Farizan shared insights on the industry mix as well as answered questions from the public regarding sustainability and green building in Singapore. It’s official! GreenA has been longlisted for the 2016 Ashden Awards as one of the 49 green energy organisations from all over the world who are in the running for the awards! Established in 2001, the Ashden Awards are a globally recognised measure for excellence in the field of green energy. Orgazanizations in the International category will be awarded based on their work in the developing world. The awards was presented at the Royal Geographical Society in London on 9 June 2016. HANOI, VIETNAM Accelerating innovation and initiating research projects, STI 2016 provides a platform for cross-regional dialougue between Europe and South East Asia. The showase of innovations and strategies was held from 10th - 12th May 2016. GreenA is pleased to be selected to receive national coverage from the media to speak on our work in the sustainability field. Green Mark Residential for Existing Building

SINGAPORE- Residential living is an important compo-nent to a vibrant campus life and NTU has decided to undergo greening works under the Green Mark Scheme for Existing Buildings for its Hall of Residence 4. Established in 1988, the Hall has a total capacity of 501 rooms and common areas.

Consistent with NTU’s longer masterplan to develop a novel campus-wide sustainability framework of the Eco Campus initiative aims a reduction of 35% in energy, water and waste intensity by 2020. One of the key features of this project was the replacement of existing air-conditioning units with ones that are powered by solar thermal energy.

With so much energy consumption being attributed to the cooling of buildings, utilising proper residential sized solar thermal cooling systems eliminate the need for electricity or natural gas. Capturing the sun’s energy through solar heating collectors, this technology is ideal for our tropical climatic conditions.

Back then, it was still common view that solar cooling would only be pro�table through photovoltaic driven compression cooling machines. However, optimized collectors, improved components and an enhanced system design have contributed to make solar thermal cooling a real technical alternative. It is now even able to compete �nancially with systems operating with conventional electricity sources.

Solar thermal cooling can help reduce the electricity peak demand associated with conventional cooling, as maximum solar radiation usually occurs when cooling is needed. The solar thermal air-conditioners installed in Hall 4 can also operate in the evening by using thermal storage.

SINGAPORE- Holistic care goes beyond medical attention to encompass patient’s social, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being. Interestingly, the second �oor of the polyclinic used to be a church, now turned extended facility for the polyclinic.

Because modern healthcare facilities are large consumers of resources, they provide an opportunity to make changes or reduce the consumption of these resources.

After renovation works, the Polyclinic now has savings of 27% for energy. The change in all the air-conditioning from VRV to e�cient split units contributed greatly to these savings. With the same air�ow, the facility cools better and faster due to its improved air distribution. Windows with a shading co-e�cient are also changed to optimize the building’s thermal envelope.

Chemicals that de�ne indoor air quality can also a�ect health. As a

healthcare facility, the focus on providing a clean and healthy environment has been kept a pivotal point. Materials and products used are ensured to contain as minimal toxic materials as possible.

Low VOC paint, environmentally friendly adhesives, low emission �ooring as well as a HEPA �lter were used. Persistent Bio accumula-tive Toxics and chemicals were also reduced.

Green materials used for waterproo�ng, tiles and tiles pointing, vinyl �ooring stair nosing as well as the ceiling plaster board were certi�ed either under the Singapore Green Label or the Singapore Green Building Product Scheme.

The design of interior walls adopts a wave motif to capture the characteristic of being in proximity to the sea front. The wave ascent patterns create a soothing e�ect for the patients.

Concrete requries heavy mining and uses a lot of energy in its production process. The Dhammakaya Centre is designed and constructed to have a low Concrete Use Index (CUI), by utilising steel beams in its structures.

Another way to reduce concrete consumption is by using ‘green-mix’ concrete mannufactured using part recycled concrete aggregate. This reduces the consumption of raw materials and minimizes the wastes generated from demolished concrete structures.

Windows can make a major contribution to energy conservation and comfort. Glazing choices a�ect how much light is transmitted, how of the sun’s heat they allow in the interior spaces, and how much of the sun’s heat they allow in the, and how well they prevent the �ow of heat.

Green tip: Before selecting new windows, determine what types of windows will work best and where to improve your building’s energy e�ciency. It's a good idea to understand the energy performance ratings of windows so you’ll know what energy performance ratings you need for your windows based on your climate and building design.

EAST AFRICA, TANZANIA- Project Kigamboni Housing Estate was selected as one of 20 exemplary worldwide projects presented during City21 launch. The international observatory for sustainable urban solutions was launched the 9th of December during the Conference for climate change- COP21.

Dar es Salaam is a city where people dream, hope and work towards better opportunities. Many have migrated to the city, but �nd it di�cult to a�ord proper homes, thus the congregation of poor, unplanned settlements which account for 70% of the city’s population.

The Kigamboni Housing Estate is the �rst Green Mark Certi�ed project in Africa and possibly the �rst green certi�ed a�ordable housing estate in Africa. This project is developed by the National Housing Corpora-tion, directly under the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Human Settlements in Tanzania, with GreenA Consul-tants as the lead ESD Consultant. This a�ordable sustainable housing project spanning 10 hectares is entailed of 187 landed homes, a clinic, a kindergarten, nursery school and community playground and park.

The passive design was conceptualised for this project- reducing the consumption of energy without the compromise of comfort or performance. A CFD Simulation was also conducted to ensure the

There are myriad approaches to sustainability that works and could be explored such as converting organic waste into energy. We just have to �nd the right combination to the staretgies that best �t.

Coming up... the Panama City Municipiality, Panama Green Building Council and GreenA Consultants is currently developing an eco-audit protocol customised to �t the environmental conditions of city and localized green building speci�cations. Metrics include energy and water conservations and e�ciency, waste minimization, level of recycling, environmental commit-ment, green materials used as well as indoor air quality.

SINGAPORE- A green military camp. And no, I don’t mean the camou�aged attire of the soldiers or the massive tanks. Military Training Base, Nee Soon Camp is gunning for the Green Mark Gold Award. Let’s take a look at a few of the design and engineer-ing principles used in this project:

Building OptimizationThe science of daylighting design is not just how to provide enough daylight to an occupied space, but how to do so without any undesirable side e�ects. The building footprint of the camp are fully optimized for north-south exposures, with no exposure to east exposures at all.

Building structures can redirect prevalent winds for cross-ventilation. Taking advantage of the North South winds in Singapore, the force of the wind pull air through the building. The Envelope Thermal Transfer Value computation provides an accurate re�ection of the di�erent elements in the envelope system such as heat conduction through opaque walls, heat conduction through glass windows as well as solar radiation through glass windows were captured, for the purpose of energy conservation. These three components are averaged out, with the maximum permissible ETTV set to 50W/m2. The

military camp has scored a good 44.72W/m2.

Through the Building Envelope Analysis, which measures the thermal comfort and protection from natural elements, the roofs of the buildings were also designed for better thermal resistance.

With a Concrete Usage Index of 0.38, the military camp is designed with optimal usage of concrete for building components.

Green Materials Constructing greener, materials such as concrete, AAC walls, waterproo�ng, ceiling boards and wheels stoppers are under the Green Label. Green concrete with substitutions of raw materials are mixed with recycled aggregates.

High E�ciency Lighting The use of a high frequency ballast limits the amount of current in an electric circuit, thus driving e�cacy up. The use of integrated circuitry to convert the input electrical charge from 60 hertz to a range of 20,000 to 50,000 hertz radiate light more e�ciently, therefore reducing the power needed to produce the same amount of light.

Water E�ciencyApart from using more sustainable construction materials and designing and engineering for energy e�ciency, water e�cient taps and �ushing systems with ratings of “very good” or “excellent” under the WELS rating under Singapore’s National Water Agency, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) reduce the consumption of water by at least 50%.

Sustainability strategies for Project Hamptons does not end just at the building design and construction level. Because people spend alot of time indoors, time should be spent in spaces that allow for us to breathe easy, give us views of nature and daylight, and make us healthier and productive.

Interior design plays an important role in creating functional spaces that improve our quality of living and interactions with the environment.

One of the most important aspects of sustainability is health. The choice of indoor materials such as furniture, �xtures as well as equipment that promote good indoor air quality, are toxin-free, are water/energy e�cient shapes the sustainability quotient of the design.

Understanding health implications of certain materials that contain substances such as formaldehyde (often used in furniture and cabinetry) and knowing where to source for formaldehyde-free products are key.

EPA studies indicate indoor levels of pollutants may be up to ten times higher than outdoor levels. [1]

Paints, sealants, adhesives, and many other construction materials were speci�cally selected on this project for their low levels of VOCs.

Green spaces are also meant to help save you money in the long run. Utilities such as electricity as well as water bills are kept low with the installation of e�cient water

SINGAPORE- Project Hamptons, developed by Mapletree investments (MIT) in a built to suit lease for Hewlett Packard (HP) features two blocks- HP’s production site and another to house its o�ce.

Project Hamptons has been awarded the highest accolade- the Green Mark Platinum Award under the national green rating scheme by the Building and Construction Authority.

A special green feature would be that the development uses the Cobiax system that helps to reduce materials usage and optimize space usage.

Concrete is the second most consumed substance on Earth after water and its manufacturing is highly energy and resource intensive. After coal-powered electricity, cement manufacture is also the next biggest emitter of greenhouse gases, accounting for approximately 5% of annual anthropogenic global CO2 production.

Manufactured from 100% recycled products, Cobiax replaces the massive concrete inside the reinforced concrete slab and makes it considerably lighter. This allows the development to be constructed substantially more �exible, economical and sustainable. The use of this technology also helps reduce the emission of eco-toxic substanc-es by 20%.

Sustainable certi�ed products such as the ceiling board, AAC block, raised �oor and rebar are also widely used throughout the project.

The building envelope including walls, windows and roofs are designed with good insulation, leading to low ETTV value of 32.7W/m2 and thus low cooling load for the air-conditioning systems.

The water-cooled chiller plant installed in this development will save more than 30% of electricity compared with a typical code compliant

air-conditioning system. Environmental consciousness and professionalism of builders are emphasized, through the adoption of green and gracious construction practices as well as CONQUAS.

The construction environmental management plan includes water, energy and construction waste monitoring.

Biodiversity of the site is also taken into serious consideration with all existing trees onsite being conserved. More plants of di�erent species are also introduced into the landscaping to reduce the overall heat island e�ect.

The “sick building syndrome” is a common condition a�ecting o�ce workers in working environments with poor ventilation. To ensure indoor air quality is maintained, the use of MERV 13 �ltration media and di�erential pressure monitoring equipment in Air Handling Units (AHUs) has been installed.

The design of CapitaGreen takes inspiration from organic elements. With more than half the facade will be covered with various �ourishing plants and vertical greenery, sky terraces at levels 14 and 26, and a sky forest at level 40, CapitaGreen does give one a image of a luscious plant growing into the sky.

A key green feature is the cool void at its centre core, which channels fresh cool air from the rooftop Sky Forest on level 40 to the o�ce �oors, providing tenants with good indoor air quality. The wind scoops are orientated to the prevailing winds and at 245 metres, the dynamic pressure of the wind is converted into positive static pressure to reduce of load of handling units.

Floor cooling curtain glass walls with double skin facade reduces heat gain by 26% and allows daylighting to seep into the space, allowing occupants to enjoy the panoramic views of the Marina Bay and the Central Business District without having to feel the warmth of the afternoon sun.

RWANDA- The Republic of Rwanda released its Green Growth and Climate Resilience National Strategy for Climate Change and Low Carbon Development in October 2011. The Strategy aims to build upon work that is already being done in Rwanda on climate change, focusing the various projects and policies in a holistic national document which encompasses the long-term direction as well as short-term priority actions.

One of the priorities identi�ed under the economic transformation pillar of EDPRS2 is to transform the economic geography of Rwanda by facilitating urbanization and promoting secondary cities.

Rwanda is among the most urbanizing countries in the world where the population in urban areas has more than triple since 1990. However, it remains among the lowest urbanized countries in the world with about 18% of the population in urban areas. Projections indicate that about 35% of the population will be living in cities by 2020.

By 2020, it is estimated that the housing stock de�cit in Kigali alone, will stand at 344,000 units, with more than 50% of the demand being directed to a�ordable housing.

The Rwanda Housing Authority has announced that Green and A�ordable houses is one of the key priorities of the Housing and Urbanization Sector. In the urgency to build more homes to improve the housing stock market, intercepting sustainability into its design, engineering and construction will not be disregarded.

According to Fidele Ndayisaba, Kigali’s mayor, construction on several new mass housing developments is due to begin in the next few years. Unlike high-end projects such as Vision City, which typically generate adequate returns without the need for state support, these developments will bene�t from government subsidies for roads, water, electricity, sanitation and other basic infrastructure.

SINGAPORE- It might come to a suprise to some, but constructing new, energy e�cient buildings can be less eco-friendly than renovating old ones.

A study by the Preservation Green Lab of the National Trust for Historic Preservation shows building reuse almost always has fewer environmental impacts than new construc-tion—which means we’d be smart to spend at least as much time renovating

existing buildings as we do new green construction.IBM @ Changi business park is in the midst of major renovations and retro�ts to improve sustainability and energy performance.

The approach is to create a high performing building by applying the integrated, whole building design process. The renovated building will achieve 35% of energy savings through the replacement of all AHU/CHWP

and VSD drives. The installation of PV panels on the rooftop will also replace 5% of electricity usage. Installation of WELS 3-tick water e�cient �ttings at the cafe, toilets, pantry and as well as for irrigation systems and equipment will

be able to cut water consumption by up to half. Installation of water meters also helps monitor major water usage.

The replacement of the Building Management System allows greater controllability for the building maneger to optimize operations. Green materials with recycled content are also sourced for the renovations.

Carparks wil be installed with CO2 sensors to regulate mechanical ventilation. This demand control ventilation system controls outdoor supply of fresh air into the facility depending on the number of people and their activity.

How to design for natural ventilation in warm, humid climates?

When designing for natural ventilation, CFD takes wind speed and prevailing wind directions during the di�erent months of the year into account for its simulation.

The simulation of natural ventilation takes advantage of both wind and buoyancy in in order to drive fresh air through a building.

Air�ow modelling method that can be used to predict air�ow and heat transfer to create a thermally-comfortable, healthy and energy e�cient space.

MALAYSIA- Oxley Malaysia's �agship and signature project is set to transform KL CBD's skyline into a cityscape be�tting the future.

Adjacent to the world-renowned Petronas Twin Towers and KLCC along Jalan Ampang, these new iconic towers will gracefully soar high into the sky and house some of the best names in the world for retail, services and hospitality.

The design concept is inspired by the Malaysian “weaving” arts that cohabits with the existing cityscape. It features a 25,000 sq.ft public plaza on the Jalan Ampang side, creating an urban corridor towards the KLCC Park. There are also 2 facility sky decks that straddle between the towers.

A sustainable, high performance & e�cient building while exudes state of the art technology in construction and operations.

The mixed development will comprise of the Oxley Towers as well as residences by So�tel and Jumeirah.

Façade TechnologyThe development of the structural system and selection of materials merge together with the overall architectural façade statement, helping reinforce the design concept and resulting in a more economical and sustainable structure, larger column free areas with greater �exibility for future occupancies and variations.

Extensive Greenery(Jumeirah and So�tel) Extensive greenery at facility �oors provide shading and help reduce overall heat island e�ect. In addition, the compost used are recycled from horticultural waste. The So�tel residences also feature a roof garden at Level 78.

SINGAPORE- The 2500 sq m state-of the-art technical centre features Asia’s �rst ever independent ballistics testing facility, featuring two ballistic ranges, as well as labs for conducting comprehensive tests for both personal and vehicle armour.

Wherever possible, day lighting was maximized to reduce need for arti�cial lighting. Some of the building features include open car parks as well as sky lighting for the workshops.

In order to cut down on the amount of air-condition-ing needed, the building has been positioned to eliminate direct west facing façade. The passive solar building design was conceptualized to help reduce a signi�cant amount of radiant solar heat from entering the building. The extensive use of natural

and mechanical ventilation for the workshop area as well as the installation of energy e�cient air-conditioning which runs at less

than 0.71 kilowatt per refrigeration ton (kW/RT) also helps with the reduction of the cooling load.

Water ConservationWater �ttings selected for the dwelling units are rated against the Water E�ciency Labelling Scheme (WELS) by the Public Utilities Board (PUB). The �ow rates of these taps are measured to ensure water e�ciency and conservation.

Water sub-meters for major water usage will also be installed to monitor water usage for irrigation and swimming pool. This would also help in identifying possible leaks in the future should there be sudden spikes in water consumption.

Indoor Air QualityMany of us spend most of our time indoors. Chemicals released from modern building and furnishing materials as well as chemical fumes from paints and solvents compromize indoor air quality.

Increasingly, attention has been given to ensure good indoor air quality is maintained. Low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) paints will be used for all internal walls to create healthi-er environments.

Green TransportationElectric charging stations also are provided within the facility. More electric car charging stations means more electric vehicles on the streets and less pollution in the air we breathe.

Green RoofThe afternoon heat is intense in Kuala Lumpur. With skyscap-pers stacked within the capital city, strategies such as increas-ing the number of trees and vegetation, green roofs, cool roofs, cool pavements and smart growth all help to reduce the urban heat island e�ect.
