Dear Community of Joy,Easter comes late this year. Are you ready for our celebration of the resurrection? For centuries Christians have used the forty days leading into Good Friday to prepare our hearts for the main event of Christianity: Resurrection Sunday.

You may notice this month that some believers have ash in the shape of a cross on their foreheads. This symbol suggests the beginning of “Lent.” Most Baptists have not celebrated Ash Wednesday by wearing ash. Still, many mark the occasion with a season of prayer to prepare for Easter. This year we will have both a prayer meeting and a worship service led by Jessica Bird and other worship leaders on Wednesday March 1. Please plan to join us.

One way Christians prepare for Easter is by fasting from something to remind them of Christ’s gift of life. I know we come from a long line of feasting rather than fasting. I am in favor of both. Jesus said to his followers, “When you fast . . .” May I ask? When do we fast? Some give up chocolate, or desserts for this season of preparation. One year I chose to abstain from watching a favorite television show. Each week at the time of the show, I remembered the price Christ paid for my sin. It provided an occasion for an intentional focus on my relationship with Christ.

Richard Foster’s book, A Celebration of Discipline, offers a whole chapter on ways we might fast from something so that we may feast on God’s presence and provision. May I ask you to read that chapter and join us for prayer on Wednesday, March 1. Who knows what God might do if we seek him in a season of fasting and prayer? Let’s find out.
