Talmud Torah Update
April 4th, 2014 -4th of Nissan, 5774
CalendarsIf you haven't yet bought one of the beautiful 6th grade
calendars, please do so this Sunday. They start in
April/Nissan because that's the first month of our spiritual
calendar. They are available for $10 and all proceeds go
to Talmud Torah. A big thanks to Oriana, Anna, the sixth
graders, and Mark Hurwit for this project.
New StaffWe are very sad to say goodbye to our fabulous Sam
Spinrad who has been teaching 1st grade this year. He is
an excellent teacher. Unfortunately for us, he's moving to
California for a full-time job. Fortunately, the first grade
class will go from one terrific teacher to another. Lauren
Schwartz will be taking over for Sam for the remainder of
the year. Lauren has taught for Talmud Torah before. She
loves teaching primary-age kids. She has been a camp
counselor for many years and brings that enthusiasm and
spirit to her class.
Substitute Teachers NeededGiven our staff turnover this year, we have significantly
depleted our substitute teacher pool. If you would be
interested in being on our official substitute teacher list,
please let us know.
Social Media RemindersThere are some terrific features of our tbieugene.org
website. It's nice to be able to send an email to everyone
in a class group. It's helpful to be able to post sound files
and other homework elements on the pages. It's handy
to be able to send a fellow parent a message without
finding the TT directory to remember their email address.
The class groups are all private, so unless you're logged

on, you can't see what's posted on the page.
However, in order to make that work, people have to be
"members" of the website, just like being "on" Facebook.
Just like Facebook has "walls" that are visible to others,
so does the ning platform that hosts tbieugene.org
(they're called "pages"). If you leave a comment on
someone's tbieugene.org "page," this is visible to anyone
with internet access rather than just tbi folks. The good
news is you can easily delete stuff you don't want on the
page. In general though, we'd recommend reserving
posting 'comments" to people's pages for stuff like, "You
did a great job on that project" or "thank for your help
with the potluck cleanup," since messages on individual's
pages can be view-able to the world. If you want to send
someone a private note, you can do so by clicking on
the "send a message" link beneath their name. Just
a reminder as we all navigate this increasingly social-
media dependent world.
Reminder... Living Museum andHolocaust Remembrance Day NextMonthIn April our school community will gather to celebrate our
shared and diverse heritage in a special program called a
Living Museum after Talmud Torah from 11:30-12:30. Each
Talmud Torah family will be asked to present a
tangible item that holds significant meaning for your
family's history and/or identity. It may be something you
use regularly or something that has been stored away. It
can be old or new. Maybe it's your family's favorite PJ
library book. Maybe it's a 100-year-old kiddush cup.
Perhaps it's a kipah someone brought back from Israel, or
the recipe for your grandmother's challah. Maybe it isn't
even something that is inherently Jewish, but it helps you
be Jewish! Get creative. Whatever it is, you'll have the
chance to say how this artifact represents your identity.
Start thinking about what you might share. Find out more
about this project at the Living Museum website. We'll
provide students and families with more information as
we get closer to
the event on April
27th.
We will also have
some activities
designed to
recognize
Holocaust
Remembrance Day
on the 27th as
well. Families will be able to choose which offerings they
want to participate in with their students. If you have
ideas you'd like to see be part of the day, let us know.

Wish List:Like to garage sale? Frequent thrift shops? Wanting to scale
back on your own stuff? Wanting to give a gift to Talmud
Torah? We could use some things.
Jewish books. Talmud Torah has gone ahead and
purchased several of the books on this wish list this
year (for just a few dollars apiece), but I keep
adding to the list.
And Remember...
