The Hawks are Taking Flight! The Hendricken varsity football team opened the season with a blowout game against the La Salle Rams. The final score of the game was 27 - 10 with Hendricken scoring their first touchdown in the first quarter. A huge run to the 10 yard-line was unfortunately called back on a holding penalty, but the Hawks marched down the field for their first touchdown. The Rams started to come back at the end of the third quarter, but the Hawks ultimately secured the victory in the second half. By Jack Ayers 8th Grade

This past month, here at Bishop Hendricken High School, the faculty and the seniors faced off in the annual Faculty vs. Seniors Volleyball Game. The match was a best 2 of 3 games series, and games were played to 25 points.

At the start of the first match it was all seniors with a score of 4-1. The faculty did not seem to have what it would take to win. Leading at about the halfway point of game 1, the se-niors seemed to be in control with a score of 14-7. They went up by more points towards the end of the match, bringing the score to 18-10. With an amazing comeback, the faculty took game 1 of the series with a score of 25-23!

The seniors were in control once again in the beginning of the second game. Throughout the match the seniors maintained their lead and at one point led the faculty by a score of 15-8. They ended up keeping their lead throughout the match and winning by a decisive score of 25-13.

Staring off the third and final game of the best 2 out of 3 games series, the game was tied 1-1. Then the faculty came out hot with an early 4-1 lead. At the halfway point of the match the game was even 12-12. Nearing the end of the match the game was tied at 20 with 5 points remaining until one team would win. The seniors pulled out the victory over the faculty with a 25-23 win. They are this year’s Senior vs. Faculty Volleyball Champions. Congratulations to both teams on a job well done!

Students Volunteer at the Emmanuel House

On Friday, September 29, five Hendricken students, as well as, Mr. Gambardella, Mrs. Gambardella, Mr. Mancuso and Fr. Murphy, partic-ipated in an Edmund Rice Service Night. Our students prepared and served dinner to over sixty men at the Emmanuel House a homeless shel-ter for men administered by the Diocese of Providence. These service events are inspired by the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice and his great devotion to care for the poor. As a school community, we are always mindful that the Essential Elements of an Edmund Rice Christian Broth-er Education calls us to “Stand in Solidarity with those Marginalized by Poverty and Injustice.” By Mr. MancusoVice President for Mission Integration

During the month of September, the eighth grade cross country team have had a great start. The team has shown their determination and persistence running at practices, and some going beyond the required distances at the practices, in order to improve. The sport is not about each person, but the team has to push each other to help the team overall. Again and again the team has shown significant improvement in mere weeks.

Each week on Wednesday the team competes against about 100 runners from the schools of Father Doyle, St. Jo-seph, St. Rose of Lima, Monsignor Clarke, Our Lady of Mercy, and St. Pius X. The course is about 2 miles in the woods at Goddard park. The score of the team is calculated by taking the placement of the first four members of a team and adding them for a total. The team with the lowest total is declared the winner. Hendricken has placed 5th in the first race, 2nd in the second race, and 3rd in the third race for the month of September.

The team was in high spirits on the day of the first race on September 13th, despite the heat and sun. The team did not seem scared or nervous, because they knew that they had trained well and were prepared for anything. They were able to show what the new team could do, and the team managed to achieve 5th place overall. Matt Del Sesto was the first runner for the eighth grade team to achieve first place in the race. Here are the top five Hendricken runners who will represent the team:

1. Matt Del Sesto - 1st place - 11:172. Adam King - 10th place - 12:303. James Lockhart - 15th place - 13:404. Aidan Moran - 28th place - 14:085. Andrew Fuvich - 32nd place - 14:38

The next race was on September 20th. It was overcast, cool, and sprinkling lightly. These conditions greatly improved running conditions, as everyone’s time improved by about one minute. Here are the top finishers who helped place us in 2nd place overall:

1. Matt Del Sesto - 1st - 10:522. Adam King - 3rd - 11:563. James Lockhart - 14th - 12:454. Aidan Moran - 26th - 13:545. Levi Wurster - 35th - 14:45 (Article continues on next page)

8th Grade Cross Country

The next race happened on September 27th. This marks the halfway point of the season. The conditions were like that of the first race, hot, humid, and hazy. Although the temperature was high, the team spirit was higher. The weather did not prove to be a hindrance to the team, as most times stayed around the same with very little negative change. The team placed in 3rd overall, and the top runners were as follows, and the fifth runner’s score counted this week in the tally because of a tie with St. Joseph’s:

1. Matt Del Sesto - 1st - 10:572. Adam King - 3rd - 11:353. James Lockhart - 14th - 12:124. Aidan Moran - 24th - 13:445. Andrew Fuvich - 29th - 14:05

The team seems to be off to a good start. They only have a few more meets until the season is over. This seems to be the best team the eighth grade has had in their history, and hopefully they will have a good season. Read next month’s article to see how the runners fared in October!

The Hendricken robotics team started this month and has begun working on training new recruits and disassembling their old robot for parts. The theme for this year’s competition is Relic Recovery. The tasks and layout of the arena are themed after jungle exploration. Anyone can join and help out, no matter what your technical or mechanical skill level is.

If you plan on joining the team, be sure that you can fully commit your-self to the team. This is a competitive, team sport like football. If you join, be ready to make changes in your schedule to accommodate the team. If you don’t want to join, but instead want to learn to code, then there is a coding class held in the computer lab after school on Tuesday taught by the Vice-President of Code and Logic from the robotics team, Paarth Tan-don. Robotics meeting are normally held on Thursday in room 107A if you would like to join or ask questions.

Olympic DayWhile the weather outside was cold, the school’s team spirit was blazing with passion. On September 29, Bishop Hendricken had their annual Olympic day. There were events for everyone ranging from sporting events, like football and races, to events that appealed to the mind, like chess and Trivial Pursuit.

The day was a nice break from the work and was an exciting day for all to say the least. The day started with the entire school gathering at the track to cheer on their homeroom teams as they competed in track and field events. All the students cheered as their classmates ran around the track in the mile sprint, the 100-yard dash, and 4x200 relay. After the track events came the tug of war. The teams did well in holding their ground, so matches took a couple of minutes until a winner could be decided.

After the events at the track the students returned to the school to participate in their own event that were happening around the school. Some of the events were improv, music competition, chess, basketball, volleyball, and Trivial Pursuit. The teachers took the scores from the events and tallied the totals for each homeroom. Each homeroom was inserted into a bracket with homerooms of the same grade level. The homeroom with the highest score won. Each homeroom had a good showing, and, in the end, everyone had a nice relaxing day to compete against their friends.

It was an exciting day for everyone, and everyone gave their best effort in helping their homeroom to victory. The day would not be possible with the help of the administration and teachers who give their time to help us. It was a fun and relaxing day that wrapped up a week of school.
