What Is EMV, Anyway?
EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard and Visa.
It’s become the global standard for “chip cards” and IC card capable point of sale (POS)
terminals and automated teller machines (ATMs).
WHAT DOES THE CHIP HAVE TO DO WITH IT?
The EMV chip proves the card is legitimate.
• Authenticate card• Verifying cardholder's PIN• Authorizing transaction
EMV is proven to protect the issuer, the merchant and the consumer.
Why Is This Happening?
Combating Fraud
Data is more secure than on a magnetic stripe card because EMV supports dynamic authentication.
Fraud is reduced and related chargebacks are minimized.
In the UK, since the adoption of EMV, there has been a 72% reduction in card-present fraud.
What Does This Mean For Restaurants?
Two Major Concerns
COSTS OF EMV: e.g. New EMV terminal(s), hardware, EMV terminal(s) installation, gateway costs for POS-integrated
solutions, and training.
vs.
COSTS OF NON ADOPTION: Chargebacks + related fees
COST
EMV represents a shift in liability. The lesser technology is the loser in
the fraud game.
