world at warIn our series of articles we published an article on 20 November with the memories of Mr Nick van Zyl, who was present (as a young boy in 1952) when the first intercontinental flight from London to Johannesburg (Palmietfontein) took place. We promised a 100 bucks to the person who could spot Nick on the photo. Mimi Sutherland called Daan, claiming that she could say where Nick was. We still have to bring the two of them together so that Nick can confirm Mimi’s claim. We will keep you posted.Nick also sent us a story (very interesting) about Combrinck’s Beer Hall. We’ll publish it at a later stage. The first half of the 20th century seems to be a series of setbacks. No sooner is the Great Depression over when World War II shakes the planet. Once again, South Africa was drawn into the war as a part of British Commonwealth, a cause of irritation for those who remembered Germany’s support at the turn of the century. And now, with much of the country’s energy going into the war effort, came the closure of several mines around Alberton. As the payable reef sank deeper and deeper it became more and more expensive to mine. The mines on Roodekop

closed down, so did Jumpers Deep, Knights Central and Simmer Deep. The result was of grave concern to Alberton. Many of her residents lost their jobs and could not find other employment. In almost no time at all, the town seemed to be emptying as more and more people went further to find work. The Town council once again analysed Alberton’s geographical situation, and realised it being close to the biggest rail junction in Africa and equally placed for industry. Added to that, there was plenty of land available, and all the essential services. And the great drive for industry began. In 1943 land was bought from the farm Roodekop, and the proposed industrial area was named Alrode, from a combination of the names Alberton and Roodekop. The first company to build in this new township was CJ Fuchs (Pty) Ltd.(From An Alberton Album, 1997, Alberton Town council)For any information on the Alberton Heritage Society, please contact Alberton Heritage Society on 011 869 9417 (Beverley-Ann Small). December is in full swing and it marks a time of things coming to an end. The year 2013 was one of various highs and lows for South Africa. Alberton saw numerous untimely deaths of residents, including those of young teenagers Chané and Mischke Nothnagel and Peter Robertson. It was also the year that we said goodbye to former President Nelson Mandela and Baby Jake Matlala. This was the year that Oscar Pistorius shocked the world by being charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp. We were there to cover it all.It was also the year that tame TIMES won the Ekurhuleni Community Award for Best Print Media for the second consecutive year and we were in the fantastic position to offer a young lady the chance to study next year. We had the privilege of helping Werner Fourie with his awesome charity, Project Cat-Eye, to find people in need of sight support. My time at tame TIMES has also come to an end. It is with a sad heart that I’m saying goodbye to friends, colleagues and readers. My time at tame TIMES has been incredible; I have met people in the community who has inspired me beyond belief. But it is with great pleasure that I can introduce a face who will be familiar with most of you, Ndu Ngwenya, who will be taking tame TIMES Alberton to new heights. But in every end, there is a new beginning. 2014 is so close we can almost taste it. The new year always feels like a new beginning, a time where you can leave all of the previous year’s negative things behind and take a huge breath of new, fresh air – and tame TIMES will bring you the same Fresh

Approach to Local News, only fresher! To everyone who’s planning on going on holiday, we wish you a safe trip. Those of you who are planning on staying home, enjoy a restful Festive Season. We wish everyone enough time to shake off 2013 in order to take on 2014 with energy that lasts throughout the year.To all the loyal readers who made my journey at tame TIMES one I will always remember and keep close to my heart, thank you! May you have a wonderful and blessed Christmas and all the best wishes for 2014, make it one to remember!

In every end, there is a new beginning. 2014 is so close we can almost taste it. The new year always feels like a new beginning

Ethemba Village of Hope Ethemba Village exists to raise future leaders within our beautiful nation. It is their mission to be able to take vulnerable, hurt widows and orphans, as requested in Isaiah 61:1-1, and love and nurture them within a village of hope and love. A widowed mother is assessed through a social worker and is incorporated into the village for the long term. Ten fully equipped homes will be given to the mothers to house 8 orphaned children, which she will adopt as her own and raise and develop them into heroes, granting spiritual leadership and unconditional love. “Children are our future and we aim to equip them with a loving and sound family environment, allowing them to grow into influential adults affecting the community and the nation. This in turn will promote team effort that will encourage the future leaders to live with one another in harmony and be able to laugh throughout the coming years as God builds our nation. They’ll then be able live to the fullest each and every day.”Ethemba’s dream is to develop a self-sustaining Village whereby the mothers have the ability to grow fresh produce for themselves as well as a system whereby they will be able to earn a small income for themselves. They aim to develop a skills development program where the mothers and older children are given the skill to

produce marketing items for the sustainability of the village, such as the making of jewellery, aprons, child care overalls, prayer mats etc.The village will adopt green initiatives, incorporating solar energy, solar geysers, recycling of rain water and wind turbines and hydroponics.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police stand to make adifferenceThe Ekurhuleni Metropolitan police Department (EMpD) recently held their annual festive law enforcement campaign for areas in and around the City of Ekurhuleni.“We want to make the drivers aware and have them comply with the rules of the road; we are distributing these pamphlets to make the public aware of the safety measures we are implementing,” MMC Mthuthuzeli of the EMPD said. The dedicated men and women of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police stopped vehicles to check whether they were roadworthy or not, and handed out their roadworthy pamphlets. “The state of some of the vehicles and drivers are not up to standard and we will have a zero tolerance policy during the festive season,” Mthuthuzeli added. The Chief of Police, Hlula Msimang

added that the Metropolitan Police are determined to get everyone driving safer. “We can’t achieve this unless all the citizens comply.” Msimang added that there are too many cars on the road and they are starting a campaign to get the citizens of Ekurhuleni to use public transport. MMC Mthuthuzeli added, “We want all road users to be responsible during the festive season and wish all citizens of the City of Ekurhuleni a merry Christmas.”The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police have the following guidelines for road safety:Do noT drink and drive. Do not overload your vehicle. Do not speed. Maintain a safe driving distance. Always fasten your safety belt. Be a safe road user this festive season and arrive alive.

Thank you to ABSA and KFC for making a differenceEvery year ABSA has a MAD (Make A Difference) week, whereby every employee is encouraged to make a difference in the community. ABSA Head Office contacted CMR Alberton and after visiting one of the crèches in Thokoza it was clear where they would like to make a difference. It was so exciting to see busses full of ABSA employees arriving in Thokoza and the enthusiasm was tangible. Eighty ABSA employees divided into groups. Everything in and around the crèche got a fresh coat of paint, the play equipment was fixed, broken windows were replaced and they even planted grass. While all of this was going on there was another team of ABSA employees that held a Christmas party for approximately

80 preschool children from Mpilisweni informal settlement. The children’s faces were painted, there was a jumping castle, balloons, and gifts for each and every child. It was a party to make every child’s heart happy. Even though it was a once-off revamp of the crèche and a single party, ABSA has adopted this crèche for a year.KFC also donated a meal to each and every child on the day, because although parties are nice these children also need food for their bellies. The KFC Add Hope initiative is a close partner of CMR Alberton, which gives food to 1400 children every day in Thokoza. It is big companies like these that make our work at CMR Alberton so much easier.

Fox Security comes to deaf couple’s aidAfter a deaf couple’s home was broken into and they were robbed of their belongings, Fox Security took it upon themselves to step in and help the couple. The Brackendowns couple could not alert authorities during the robbery due to their

disability. When Fox Security heard of the couple’s ordeal, they decided to donate a complete security system, with beams and panic buttons. It will ensure that the couple does not suffer the same ordeal in the future.

Sien julle volgende week

This is a week of a many firsts, so you can imagine my struggle with a topic to address. Thuli’s leaked Nkandla report, the commencement of e-toll, 16 days of activism against violence perpetrated against women and children, the Patriotic Alliance is a week old, Eskom CEO Brian Dames resigned, and lastly news of the passing of a world icon. As this is the last time we will interact this year on this platform, I’ve decided to touch on the one issue which touches us all (or at least should) - the law. This week I’ve chosen to premise our discussion on the following quotes by Martin Luther King Jr:“One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.”“An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law.”In a democratic situation, the vote is power, the vote gives power and power makes laws. The one thing many voters never consider is that your vote in reality means you agree with decisions of the party or the individual you choose to delegate your power to. Delegating your power to this party or individual means you agree with their current and future decisions (assuming the voter has spent some time with the policies of the group they choose to empower, otherwise the voter is an irresponsible voter), and lastly

it means you believe that the next person will not be harmed by the decisions and laws instituted by the choice you make. The law currently is under immense pressure, being challenged by resistant citizens. History has many examples of civil disobediences that have led to the will of the people forcing governments to listen. Some examples would include the demonstrations that followed Rosa Parks, standing for what she believed was unjust by refusing to stand; and the noncooperation through civil solidarity which saw the Berlin wall brought down and Germany united. The greatest and most relevant example of falling in order to stand is the life of our late statesman; Nelson Mandela submitted himself to the punishment which came with defying an unjust law (see insert on the life and times of Madiba). Martin Luther makes a valid point with the first quote. However, dear citizen, it does not end with the disobedience to the law. There are consequences, and those are made clear by Luther’s second quote. One who chooses civil disobedience chooses to disobey power and should be prepared to face the repercussions of their actions, whatever they may be. His second statement actually implies that if you are not ready to fall, rather don’t stand at all. Let’s chat, send me your views via e-mail at [email protected] or tweet @tametimes or @nietovoice. Have a wonderful holiday and let’s meet again in 2014.

My Headvoice: WHen Standing requireS falling

One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.

Hi Nieto,I felt exactly the same as our fellow Christians. I always thought that because Jesus defeated the world and death, why fight nonbelievers on His behalf. But a while back I learnt that we must defend the Gospel of Christ and not be ashamed of it. With regard prayer rooms, we and not a building or room is the church. We can talk to Him anywhere, so let’s pray for our fellow brothers and sisters.

Shalom. Joan Hartnick

My headvoice reader writes:

My name is Mandy Jungschläger from Raceview, Alberton. On Friday night (November 29) 3 armed attackers came into our house. We managed to fight them off, pressed the emergency button and phoned the Fox control room.Your response time was something like 30 seconds – amazing! We would like to sincerely thank everyone involved for excellent service and compassionate care. While the three attackers came into the house, the fourth was the driver of a beige/pearl coloured new Mini Cooper. At certain angles in the dark it looks almost silver. We saw the same car in the neighbourhood the next night and got the license plate number. We know chances are that the plate is fake or the car is stolen but please ask your staff to be on the lookout for the car. The four young black guys in the car are all armed.Again, thank you for excellent service.Mandy Jungschläger

Roads still in poor state after repairsSome months ago the Council (Ekurhuleni) conducted repair work on water pipes at the following streets in Mayberry Park: Cnr Moepel and Njala Road, and Cnr Camdeboo and JG Strydom Street. The repair work was completed but the roads where the repair work was done was left open-trenched and imposes a safety threat to pedestrians and motorists. The trenches are deep and are located in the middle of the road. Road users must drive in the opposite lane in oncoming traffic to avoid the huge trench in the middle of the road. The council filled up the trenches with rubble and dirt and did not re-tar the surface, as they should have done. Due to the recent rain and hailstorms these trenches have since become a safety hazard again, for all the dirt washed out and as a result the trenches are open again.I’ve raised my concerns with the council by filling out numerous complaints on their websites, only to receive a reference number but no action to conduct repair work. Either the complaint system on the Ekurhuleni website does not work correctly, or it is unattended or the council just does not care at all.As a rate payer I am appealing to the powers that be to please take this as a matter of urgency and to conduct the necessary repair work of these two trenches, and to tar the surfaces to avoid motorists driving in the opposite oncoming traffic lanes.A concerned resident,Phillip v/d Walt

Hoe wil ek hê mense moet my onthou? Nie almal kan ‘n Madiba-legende wees nie. Wanneer ek nou stil raak en dink, hoop ek mense sal my onthou as ‘n vrou van wysheid.

Alberton CPF named Best Community Policing ForumIt was the year that Alberton CPF won the award for the Best Community Policing Forum at the Afrisun SAPS Merit Awards. When Dave Burt first became chairperson of the Alberton CPF, he said that they would become the best CPF in Gauteng – and it happened. We as a community feel much safer knowing this fact.

It was the year that Brackendowns Police Station received three recognitions at the SAPS Merit Awards.Brackendowns’ Constable JAM Venter received a second place recognition in the Best Vispol Crime Prevention category. The other two awards received by the station went to CPF chairperson Geoff Steyn, who personally came second in the Best Volunteer category and received another second place recognition in the Best Community Policing Forum category.

Project Cat-Eye:Helping people see betterIt was the year that we took hands with Project Cat-EyeProject Cat-Eye is a non-profit organisation of The Eyewear Boutique. Founded in 2009 by Optometrist Werner Fourie, Project Cat-Eye has grown into a full-scale eye care charity, assisting hundreds of people with eye care needs. This year, tame TIMES took hands with Project Cat-Eye with a buy-one-give-one initiative during Eyecare Awareness Month. With every purchase of spectacles at Werner Fourie Optometrists, a pair of spectacles was donated to a person in need. One of the Project Cat-Eye beneficiaries wrote Werner this letter earlier this year:

Dear Doctor,

i wrote this letter to thank you for the eye examinations that you did on me, because i was really struggling in school. But now, because of you, i won’t be.

thank you so much and may the Lord be with you.

This year Alberton experienced a rollercoaster of emotions with great highlights and extreme lows within the community. In a time where everyone is starting to settle down for the holidays, we want to remember all the things that made 2013 a year to remember. We bring respect to those who tragically lost their lives and share the excitement of those who have a brighter outlook for the future. The lows included the tragedy that played off on Mandela Day, when Paul Nothnagel took the lives of his two daughters and his own. South Africa also mourns the loss of former President Nelson Mandela, who sadly passed away on 5 December. The highlights will be remembered by so many. Alberton CPF was awarded with the title of the

best Community Policing Forum in Ekurhuleni, and Thembi Mekile got the chance to go study next year. Tshepiso Tukane received a free brand new pair of spectacles from Project Cat-Eye and has the chance to improve her schoolwork. PSARU united a mother and son, after he had been missing for just over a month. We are privileged to share these stories with you once more, as we look over 2013 as it comes to an end. It was great to be a part of everything. We would like to remind our readers to keep on sending their stories next year, share your joys and sorrows, we want to be a part of it as your community newspaper of choice. To our loyal readers, may you have a blessed Christmas and a prosperous 2014!

Tragiese moord in Alberton

Hulle is by die Alberton Begrafplaas in Florentia begrawe.

PSARU reunite mother and son

It was the year that PSARU reunited Donald Nzunza and his mother after he’d been missing for more than a month.Donald went missing from the Meyer farm on the afternoon of 10 August. The 14-year-old boy, who has possible autism and also suffers from silent epilepsy, was last seen by friends playing on the farm at around 14:00 on the

day. The People Search And Rescue Unit (PSARU) was informed about the case on 16 August. The investigation was orchestrated by Elmarie Pretorius, whom arranged with the SAPS K9 Unit, the SAPS Air Support as well as members of the Alberton CPF to meet on the farm on Monday 19 August in order to start the search that would, against all odds, bring more than just closure.More than 3000 flyers later, PSARU received a call from a man named Sikhanzele Cecil Tshem, stating that he had been feeding a child every day, who then played with his own children and left. The child matched the description on the flyer. The team went out with the K9 unit to the Nelson Mandela informal settlement in Katlehong, where they found Donald wearing a green short sleeve shirt, denim shorts and his green tekkies

It was the year that South Africa lost two of its greatest legends. The Father of our Nation, Nelson Mandela, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and the first democratically elected president in our country, and “Baby Jake” Matlala, a sporting legend and former boxing champion, who died of a lung problem at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital at 11:00 on Saturday. In the words of former president Thabo Mbeki, “’Baby Jake was one of our heroes and ambassadors, who flew the country’s flag high,” They will both be sorely missed.

It was the year Leeuwenhof Akademie took a number of students to visit the Pretoria Heart Hospital to leave flowers and candles in support of Madiba. At the time Mandela had spent over a month in hospital due to his failing health. The learners delivered a bracing drum performance and proudly waved their South African flags after the principal opened with a prayer, leaving all in attendance quite emotional.

One suspect was arrested and the car confiscated. The car is a 2012 model but was modified to look like a 2010 model, which included the chassis and engine numbers. Const Mabunda and Const Thomo made the arrest.Keep up the good work officers.

Alberton SAPS made several successful arrests recently.

At first I hear this rhythm, a rhythm I don’t understand.A rhythm I’ll never dance to, it’s difficultLike dancing on sand. Why am I not getting the music? The rhythm or the tune of the band,My footsteps and turns are confusing I trip and fall in the sand!Ashamed and discouraged I lie. My spirit fading away. For the music I thought that’s inside me...That spirit will forever stay. For I am your Teacher, your Partner, your Father! I ask you to stand up again.Don’t be discouraged my child, For I will be your life long crane.

So take my hand in this music Together we will find the beat. The rhythm will flame up inside youAnd the dance floor we will meet. The trust you show to me nowIs what will carry you through? For when the turns and footsteps get difficultAnd it feels like you losing your way,Take easy my beautiful child. For in my arms you will stay!Oh what a lovely tune God has put in my heart. The rhythm is inside me nowAnd never will it part. For God and I are dancing,To a beat I do understand. For my faith, trust and beliefWon’t let me fall in the sand!

I would like to share the following photo with you. I sure think these kids deserve to be acknowledged for cleaning the park. It’s not their job to clean the park, known as the ‘peer plaas’, right across the street from my work, 48 Hendrik Potgieter Street, Alberton North. They spent the morning to clean the park, doing what the Ekurhuleni workers are supposed to do and what they get paid to do. When they do come to clean they sleep under a tree, now these kids are doing it because they don’t like playing in a dirty park. Leigh-quin, Joliano, Joanne, and Taughan

Albertonian in line for fairest in the land Brackenhurst’s Callan Corner (20) was named one of twelve beauties who will be representing Gauteng in next year’s Miss South Africa pageant. Thirty-three semi-finalists from all corners of the land were named. The ladies will have to be at their best while trying to impress a panel of judges, including Anele Mda and house music maestro DJ Black Coffee. The finals of the contest will take place on 30 March 2014, where only one lady out of the 12 confirmed in February will be crowned the fairest in the land.Alberton’s hope, Callan Corner is yet to qualify as a dance teacher, but has already achieved some amazing milestones including representing SA at international hip-hop competitions in Poland, Germany and Denmark. The 20-year-old has also choreographed dancers who have been ranked among the best both in the land and overseas.Asked which of the previous Miss SA’s she drew most inspiration from, Corner answered, “I think I have been most inspired by Miss SA 2011, Melinda Bam. Her grace and sophistication is truly something to strive for.”Callan’s hobbies include reading and painting. She is a self-confessed Maya Angelou fan and an avid follower of the talented local house music act Mi Casa.Although Callan has made the first cut, she will have a lot of work to do in convincing the judges that she has what it takes to fulfil the requirements of the modern day beauty queen. As expressed by pageant co-ordinator Pnina Fenster, “Beauty has, and will always

be, something to which we aspire, a quality that intrigues and inspires. And if ever there was a time when celebrity could be put to good use, it’s this one - as socially conscious stars like Angelina Jolie, Don Cheadle and Matt Damon prove. In that respect, the Miss South Africa pageant can actually be even more relevant than ever, combining star power, charity drives and social media. The process of judging has been wonderful and it’s been an honour, too, to judge alongside two extraordinary, bright and entertaining stars. The calibre of the semi-finalists is impressive and it will be tough to narrow them down to a field of 12.”For the full list of Gauteng’s representatives for the preliminary rounds of judging visit our website www.tametimes.co.za. To Callan Corner, we at tame TIMES wish you all the best on your quest for the most desired crown in the land.

‘n Brief geskryf deur Nelson Mandela in Afrikaans

We are honoured to have lived in the era of Nelson Mandela, a colossus of the ages.

May the lessons we learnt from him of forgiveness and love never be forgotten.

“Education is the most powerful weapon

which you can use to change the world”

Hamba Kahle, Tata MadibaIt is a sad day for South Africa. The father of our nation has passed away. His long walk to freedom is finally over, but he has left behind his footprints for us to follow where he has led.Nelson Mandela was the greatest statesman and leader we have seen in our time. He was, and remains, an icon of the struggle for freedom from all forms of oppression. His moral character, compassion and selflessness, combined with inner strength and conviction is a lesson we should all take to heart. He was a father to us all, regardless of race, gender and social standing, and we have been blessed and privileged to live in the land that can call Tata Madiba their very own.All of us at Alberton City Shopping Centre send our condolences to the Mandela family

and to the people of South Africa. Hamba kahle, Tata Madiba. You will always be with us.“I have walked that long road to freedom. I have tried not to falter; I have made missteps along the way. But I have discovered the secret that after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb. I have taken a moment here to rest, to steal a view of the glorious vista that surrounds me, to look back on the distance I have come. But I can only rest for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not ended.” Nelson Mandela.Alberton City Shopping Centre will be hosting a live viewing of the funeral of Mr Mandela in the covered Game parking on a big screen. The date is yet to be confirmed.

The astounding and talented Maxwell brought all his singing chops to Johannesburg last Saturday night. Along with his amazing band, he showed heartfelt remorse during his show for one of South Africa’s greatest losses, that of former president Nelson Mandela. The night was filled with tributes brought along by Canoc Productions and Mzansi Magic. Before Maxwell swept all off their feet, they were entertained with a recorder version of Black President, by the late Brenda Fassie, which kicked off the theme of tribute to Nelson Mandela. Maxwell opened with a three

part medley of his hits, amongst them was Sumthin Sumthin, and then retracted to the obvious elephant in the room that was Nelson Mandela’s passing. Maxwell with his already heart-wrenching voice, urged the crowd to pay tribute with him as he played footage of the former statesmen, which resulted in tears from the star and touched every single person in the Coca-Cola Dome. Maxwell then returned to the stunner performer that he is, by singing one of his most famous songs, This Woman’s Work, which got the crowd screaming and off their seats, singing along to every word. Maxwell kept everyone dancing as he sang all of his crowd pleasing hits, and made everyone forget that this was a seated concert. The singer also did not shy away from the ladies, as most tried to get to him as he got closer to the crowd. It did not help with Maxwell confessing that South Africa had the most beautiful women in the world. Maxwell gave the audience all he got, and the crowd appreciated it, but even more so when he changed his set at the last minute to share with us this difficult time that all South Africans are currently coping with and gave us the opportunity to celebrate Nelson Mandela, rather than mourn him.
