Brandon told the tame TIMES: “My brother agreed to take on the challenge with me. We decided we would do it for a good cause. My mom’s uncle died of multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2010 and we were very close to him, so we wanted to help create awareness of the condition.” Michael said the brother had done rigorous research before undertaking the challenge. “We are both very involved in school sport but built up fitness through walking every day,” he said. They left for their adventure with “basic survival tools” in their bags. “We needed water purification tablets, energy supplements, thermal clothes and general hiking clothes. The most important thing we took with us was a good pair of hiking boots each.” Despite months of preparation and research into the giant mountain that first won Brandon’s heart in a book, the brothers said nothing could have prepared them for the exhilaration of reaching the top of the mountain. “The greatest experience of my life was summit night, when I first realized the magnitude of what we had achieved,” said Michael. “Teenagers and children should not think their age means they cannot achieve great things. I know of a 10-year-old who has completed the climb, though when you are younger than 16, the Kilimanjaro authorities pay special attention to you.” Brandon said a good night’s rest and a long shower helped the boys recover from their strenuous quest. Waste not, want not

Put your best foot forward by do-nating your old school shoes and clothes to the tame TIMES Boksburg Benoni Feet-a-thon.We want to assist families in need that could do with a helping hand in the form of school shoes and clothes. There are just too many children who do not want to go to school simply be-cause they do not have school shoes or uniforms. Tame TIMES and the Greater Boksburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry would like to help them.If your child has outgrown his or her school shoes or school clothes, please donate them to this worthy cause and help to make school life a little easier for children in need. Your thoughtfulness could help give a child a future he or she might not otherwise have had. Shoes can be dropped off at the Great-er Boksburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry at 236 Rondebult Road, Libradene/Farrar Park, Boksburg. For their office hours, contact the Chamber on 011 892 0222.The shoes will be distributed to Boksburg schools next year. If your school has identified any children in need of new school clothes or shoes, send us a wish list at [email protected].

Following the recent taxi violence involv-ing rival taxi associations in which fi ve people were killed at Windmill Park Taxi Rank, violence has erupted again next to Somhlolo Taxi Rank along Barry Marais and M C Botha Street in Vosloorus, with taxi operators barricading the road and shooting randomly to stop the police from impounding their taxis.Captain Piet Rossouw, Vosloorus SAPS spokesperson, said it is alleged that the po-lice offi cers were on duty impounding illegal taxis in Boksburg and Windmill Park. There was a confl ict between Vosloorus Boksburg District Taxi Association (VBDTA) and Reiger Park Taxi Association. “The police offi cers managed to impound 10 illegal taxis and when they were taking them to Germiston they noticed that the road was barricaded with rocks. Police tried to remove the rocks, but there were bullets coming from the Som-hlolo taxi rank. The police offi cers managed to stop the shooting by fi ring warning shots

and dispersing the crowd,” said Rossouw.Abel Tsotetsi, Public Relations Offi cer of VBDTA, said the cause of the confl ict is the Windmill Park and East Central Road route. “We have proof that we have the right to op-erate on those routes - it is registered in our permit. We have met with the MEC of Com-munity, Safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, to solve the problem and we agreed that they will verify whether we are the rightful owners of the route. They will also check the licences of impounded cars and they will give us feed-back,” said Tsotetsi. He added: “We pass our deepest condo-lence to the family of the deceased. We also apologize to the community of Vosloorus and Windmill Park for the inconvenience caused.” Five people were killed in alleged taxi vi-olence at Windmill Park taxi rank in Dawn Park, but no arrests have been made so far. It is alleged that an unknown number of sus-pects escaped in a blue Volvo getaway car.

No end in sight for taxi violence

VOSLOORUS ENTRANCE: This road was allegedly barricaded by taxi operators with the intention of stopping police offi cers from impounding their vehicles.

16 teams qualify for Afcon The 2015 African Cup of Nations finals was initially supposed to be held in Morocco but due to their fear of the escalating Ebola pandemic, the authorities in that country withdrew from hosting the event and Equatorial Guinea finally stepped in as the new host of one of Africa’s most prestigious events. The road to the finals was challenging, but encouraging - for the first time in many years Group A winner South Africa amassed 12 points after playing their final match 2-2 with Nigeria, while Congo finished second on 10 points after playing to a 1-0 win in Sudan. In Group B, dominant Algeria finished top with 15 points, with Mali in second place on nine. The group C winner Gabon ended unbeaten on 12 points, with Burkina Faso the runner-up on 11 points. Cameroon

finished their campaign undefeated and was crowned Group D winner after playing a dull 0-0 draw with Ivory Coast, which finished 2nd on 10 points. Ghana topped the Group E pool with 11 points after a 3-1 victory over Togo in their final qualifier, while Guinea earned the second spot after defeating Uganda 2-0. In Group F, Cape Verde Islands and Zambia qualified with 12 and 11 points respectively, while in Group G, Tunisia on 14 and Senegal on 13 qualified - as Egypt were unable to get the results they needed to qualify as the 3rd-best-placed team. That honour went to DR Congo, which finished on 9 points in Cameroon and Ivory Coast’s Group D to complete the pool of 16 teams in Equatorial Guinea – who qualify as hosts next year. The draw for the tournament will be done on 3 December.

OUR HERO: Tokelo Rantie scored South Africa’s brace of goals against Nigeria.

The highly respected South based Extreme Fighting Champion fighter Wade “Warrior” Groth will be fighting the EFC Featherweight Champion Boyd Allen, a Springs local, on 11 December at EFC36 at the Coca-Cola Dome. This title fight is expected to be one sizzling hot fight, as both athletes are known for their exceptional striking abilities and exciting performances.tame TIMES met with Groth before a training session with one of his coaches, Walter Wendt. Asked if he was nervous to go up against the undefeated champion, Groth calmly replied, “What nerves? I have faith in my training camp and trainers.”Wendt added, “He (Groth) can test himself against the perceived best fighter in Africa (Allen).” Wendt explained that every time an athlete fights he gets better and learns more than he does in six months of training. “We can see if Wade measures up to the

apparent best fighter in Africa and use it to better his fighting skills,” he said. The 26-year-old athlete has moved down to Featherweight division from Lightweight as a career move, as he believed he would be much stronger in this division and it would be a better weight to compete in.
