Despite the rainy weather, the students at Drommedaris primary school were high-spirited, waiting excitedly in anticipation for their Disco Day to begin.This school closing event was initiated and organised by student Jared Ganess’s mother Vinolia Ganess (events coordinator) and business partner Neelan Moodley from Sparky Jive, an Events Company whose mission it is to raise funds for NGOs assisting children born with disabilities. This event was held to assist Drommedaris Primary School to raise funds to purchase school furniture that will improve the furniture problem the school is currently experiencing. Parents have decided to take matters into their own hands to help create a better learning environment for their children.With the help of Sparky Jive and the participation of the educators, Drommedaris hosted a successful disco day event featuring local dance groups such as The Go Girls, The Crazy Bad Girls, The HD Xplosives and The Steppers (gumboot dancers) who all showcased their dancing moves in front of their fellow learners and teachers. “One thing about Reiger Park se kinders, hulle kan skud!”Drommedaris Primary School has been earmarked in the Reiger Park area to be transformed into a Full Service Special Needs School and Sparky Jive’s mission is to work with and support such organisations, we hope that this is the beginning of a long-lasting relationship that will assist our children and help create the best learning environment possible to produce a productive, educated future generation.

The Reiger Park Library hosted a Storytelling Festival on the 13th March, under the theme Connect @ your library, to celebrate National Library Week. Some of the crèches in the area participated in the festival;, Kingdom Kidz, Joshua Generation, Lakeside Grd R`s, Reiger Park Early Childhood Development and Pumpkin Patch was invited too.Daniel Coopen opened the Storytelling Festival with a presentation on the programmes and services offered at the Reiger Park Library. The pre-school children were later

entertained by story tellers from the Sibikwa Arts Centre. The children and the educators were spell bound as they listened to renowned storyteller, Gcina Mhlope, narrating some of the Classical Children’s Stories. The main purpose of library week is to promote libraries in the community and to showcase the educational as well as the fun activities that are offered by libraries throughout the year. Storytelling

festival, WOW they really captured our hearts and grabbed our attention. This was real

storytelling with no boundaries, featuring music, dance, laughter and suspense. By the end of the day everyone who was there had for the fi rst time experienced storytelling with an exciting difference. “Everyone of us is a storyteller, whether you are talking to a friend over the phone, or chatting on your cell phone , telling your husband what happened at work that day, reprimanding your children at home We are all storytellers” – Quote Gcina Mhlope.

Ster-Kinekor in partnership with United International Pictures, Destiny Seating, African Leadership Academy and

the participation of the Department of Education hosted a successful, innovative, multi-sensory educational program, Addicted to Life, that incorporated a 3D experience with music,

darkness, inspiration and interaction at Cinema Park in Rosebank at The Zone on the 17 March 2015. Reiger Park, Oosrand, Ekusasa and Boitumelong Secondary School learners

were very excited at the opportunity to attend the program that was made possible by the Gauteng D e p a r t m e n t of Education, providing transport and lunch for all the learners. On arrival at the cinema, every learner received free popcorn sponsored by Big Foot Trading and a free drink sponsored by ABI. The Ster-Kinekor Crew and manager Rhae Shawn Kabantu were there to welcome everyone and ensured that everything ran smoothly on the day.The Cinema Park experience is an interactive program which

allows learners to listen attentively and their comprehension is then tested by means of a fun trivia questionnaire with prizes up for grabs for the top three learners. The top three on the 17 March were all from Reiger Park Secondary School. This program is targeted at secondary school learners, with the aim of educating them about the dangers and long term effects of drug and alcohol abuse. The learners also witnessed the impact of drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy and inhalants on the body and the brain and also learnt how to deal with peer pressure. The dangers of alcohol and irresponsible drinking were dealt with very intensely through heart wrenching stories that were relayed to the learners.Statistics have shown that approximately 30% of the participating learners have proved to change their behaviour and attitudes and at least 70% claim that they have learned something new from the program. Mrs TJ Malabi, Ekurhuleni South District Coordinator, stated that she was well pleased with the results received after the program had concluded. Congratulations are in order to Mr Smith the Provincial Coordinator, his District Coordinators and the Ster- Kinekor Team for hosting a well-planned, informative and memorable event for the learners.

Wie weet, miskien is dit nie dat die tv’s nie lank hou nie, miskien is dit net die planes wat die tv’s opmors.Ons moet met die geraas en who knows what else sit, maar dit is nie asof die Airport’s company ons eerste preference gee wanneer dit kom by development nie. Of maybe doen hulle, maar ek weet nie daarvan nie. Maar sal ons complain of dit address? Eish! Daai is weer die ander vraag. Te besig om alles op tee eet, en mekaar te attack instead om die problems te address.Maar anyway…Ek check altyd so kinders uit as hulle speel. Jy weet, daar is net baie min wat ‘n uncorrupted kind kan omkrap – ek sien die Editor like ook skryf oor kinders. Maar what happens van childhood tot teenager? Hoekom raak ons laaities so mal?

Reiger Park SAPS and CPF Patrollers conducted ‘school searches’ on Tuesday 17 March at three schools in the Reiger Park area. A total of 875 children were searched. According to Sergeant Mashudu Phathela, ReigerPark SAPS spokesperson, such raids will be conducted unannounced on a regular basis. “This is part of our school safety program, in which SAPS is committed to securing a safe learning environment,” said Sergeant Phethela.Nothing was found, but through this program the message of ‘zero tolerance’ for crime and drugs in schools went out to the learners. Much needed intelligence on drug dealing operations was also obtained through this operation.

REIGER PARK SAPS SUCCESSES

Reiger Park SAPS are looking for the family members of two deceased victims of a motor vehicle accident that took place on Sunday 5 October 2014 at about 21h00. The accident occurred when a Mercedes Benz collided with a Toyota Etios on Commissioner Street. Anyone with information or who knows the family of the deceased can contact the investigating offi cer, D/ W/O Ben Olifant at 011 916 7000. The Reiger Park Culpable homicide Case number is 71/10/2014.

On Thursday 5 September 2013 at about 11h30 Reiger Park SAPS received a call from a Rand Water employee after he discovered a African male inside a manhole at Ronde-bult old ERPM metre box. When police arrived at the scene they found a deceased man in his early twenties, wearing a black trousers and a red jacket that was burnt on his face and hands. The body of the unknown man was taken to Germiston mortuary. SAPS are appealing to anyone with information to please contact the investigating offi cer, D/W/O Ben Olifant at 011 916 7000. The Reiger Park Inquest Case number is 215/09/2013.

An unknown African male in his late thirties was assaulted at the Jerusalema Informal Settlement on Saturday 10 August 2013 at about 02h00. The man died on his way to the hospital and was taken to Germiston Government Mortuary. Reigerpark Inquest docket has been opened and being investigated. Anyone with information is urged to contact the investi-gation offi cer, D/W/O Simon Madonsela on 011 916 7000.

On Wednesday 30 July 2014 at about 05h00, Anna “Anikei” Daniels (47) Id No. 660909 1317 083 of C39 Delmore Informal Settlement was walking next to Knights train station with her friend Meikie Kelebogile Hani (who also stays with her) when she collapse and died. The rape of our women can leave our children orphansHuman life can only be delivered through a woman. So the experience of life growing and developing, from conception to birth, only women are privy to. The nurturing of new life, one can argue, is therefore more intensely felt by women at an early stage of its development. Within most societies, the woman (the mother) is seen as the caregiver, the nurturer, the healer and too often the provider and protector. Even in a modern society we still find mothers to be the primary caregiver. So when women are violated, trampled upon, blackened out and destroyed what do we have left other than displacement, confusion, chaos and hatred?Rape is a destroyer. It destroys lives. Rape does not only affect women, it also affects men, but women seem to be most affected by this scourge, according to the stats. Rape is a tactic often used in war to demoralise and de-humanise the enemy. So are we our own enemy? At any age rape is an evil destroyer of lives and the one case cannot be compared to the other as more or less evil. However, one can’t help but to frown more intensely upon a society who turns a blind eye to the rape of children, or of the aged. Someone who makes him/herself guilty of the rape of a child or an elderly person falls into a special category of evil, although rapists are already in the worst category of evil.I stood there and witnessed how a 63 year old woman, mother and grandmother, experienced convulsion upon convulsion as she had an intense epileptic attack, brought on by the taunting memory of her recent rape. The suspect in her rape is a young man she fed and

often provided a place to sleep. She allowed him in her home and not only took care of him, but also of his children, stepchildren and wife.I sat with Aunt Martha* in Angie Reiners’ office, interviewing her to find out how this horrible experience affected her. Right from the start I could see that although Aunt Martha wanted to tell her story, the memory of her experience brought her close to an epileptic attack. So I thought of cutting the interview short, but then she started speaking. She told me how she loved helping people in need, although she is just a pensioner, she would always open up her home and her cupboards to others in need. Angie agreed and also added how anyone in need was welcome at Aunt Martha’s house, and that she has 10 children, 2 of her own and 8 adopted. Aunt Martha has a heart condition and would be in and out of hospital for treatment. On the evening of Friday 6 February, Aunt Martha returned home from hospital. The man she regarded as her own son, who she often provided a place to sleep and food, for him and his family, was at her house. He raped her that night. Her best friend, who regards Aunt Martha as a sister, says that she was informed the Saturday morning, when Aunt Martha came to tell her about the incident. She says that she couldn’t believe that this man would do this to a woman “who kept his mouth open.”I asked Aunt Martha if she will open her house to people again and her answer was no.I sat there thinking how kindness rewarded with such cruelty can be replaced by so much fear that good people will close their hands and their hearts for others.Angie and Sandra*, Aunt Martha’s friend, urge people not to trust anyone, and especially

women living on their own should be vigilant.I turned my head to listen to Sandra giving her account of the events and as we turned back to Aunt Martha, her head was turned to the side and she was busy having an epileptic attack. It seems that calling to memory the events of that evening brought on the fit.I stood there feeling powerless, yet sad and confused. I was there to report on an incident and although my intention was to attempt to make people aware and hopefully help others to open up and speak out about their own trauma and so unite a community against the destroyer rape and in support of those who already fell victim to it, I experienced first-hand how devastating it can be and the effect it has on a 63 year old grandmother who was supposed to be spoiled and nurtured by society and thanked for her contributions, but who is now going through the horror of the aftermath of one man’s actions.According to Sergeant Phathela, spokesperson for the Reiger Park SAPS, the suspect was arrested and charged with rape. He appeared in the Boksburg Magistrates court on 18 March and was denied bail.

Due to an unfortunate miscommunication the tame Times Reiger Park Bulletin reported that “R 55 000 [was] allocated to repair the roof of the Centre” and that “Centre Manager, Luckmore Taikchachicka, expressed [his] gratitude towards ABI” – tame Times Reiger Park Bulletin issue of 13 February 2015. Although it could not be established why this miscommunication occurred, after further investigation it was established that no funds were made available for the CPD by ABI. An ABI spokesperson clarified that ABI do plough back into communities, but by assisting with some renovations at community and other centres, which in the case of the CPD was to paint the internal walls. are satisfied that no funds were allocated and apologise for any misunderstanding of confusion caused. We also want to commend Mr Taikchachicka , the Centre Manager, and state that although he was concerned with the miscommunication and the repercussions it might have for the reputation of the Centre if not rectified, he was very professional in his approach to correct this misunderstanding.The contribution ABI made in terms of upliftment at the Centre – confirmed by ABI - was to paint the internal walls at the Centre. At the time tame Times visited the Centre the paint job was still incomplete and ABI promised to complete it at a later stage.

By Bianca MaréThe SACSSA (South African Christian School Sports Association) National Table Tennis Championships was held in Brits last year, with seventeen-year-old Jermaine Olifant making his school Destiny Christian Academy (Eastrand Christian Academy) very proud by taking home the National Table Tennis Champion title in the u/19 division. Not only has this young sportsman received medals and tropbies for table tennis, but for soccer as well. He is also a midfi elder for his school soccer team which also won the National Christian School Soccer Tournament last year. He was also voted most improved player for Corinthians fc Soccer Club last year, in his fi rst year.Jermaine states that he will continue to play table tennis but will focus more on pursuing his soccer dream and hopes one day to play as skillfully on an international level as his favorite soccer star Yaya Toure of Manchester City.

Not only do they have an opportunity to meet and interact with Manchester United’s world renowned striker, Van Persie, but they also have a chance to showcase their skills with a possibility of being selected to play for his junior team.Duane has previously been selected by Manchester City School of Football as a junior player, featured on their poster, met the former South African soccer coach Clive

Barker and hopes some day to represent his country internationally, as well as to be the best midfi elder our country has ever seen.Grassroots is giving these boys a great opportunity to display and enhance their skills on an international level by empowering the young men to pursue their dreams.Not only has Duane’s gift made room for him to travel internationally, but it has also placed him one step closer to fulfi lling his dream of becoming like his hero Lionel Messi.
