What is PIP ?
• Participatory Identification of Poor is a
process that will help us to understand the
socio-economic conditions of the peoplesocio-economic conditions of the people
living in a village,
• Identify the very poor and poor households,
disabled and vulnerable people in an area
using participatory methodology.

6. Transect Walk
• The PIP team along with Community and Project
Facilitation Team will explore the whole village on foot.
• The team will try to observe and get to know the
surroundings such as the types of houses, resources, surroundings such as the types of houses, resources,
traditions, the village condition- geographical, social,
economic, livelihood, etc.

7. Social Mapping• Social map helps us to have acomplete picture of the village in asmall area.
• Mapping exercise providesinformation not only about theinformation not only about thespatial distribution of thecommunity, but also reveals muchabout the socio-economicconditions and the dynamicswithin the village.

• The village map can be drawn by group of villagers on
the ground using rangoli powder / chalk.
• Then volunteers will come forward and draw the

• Roads and common properties such as gram
panchayat office, post office, School, etc which will be
easily located and drawn by the people will be drawn
first
• Houses are drawn next.
8. Well-Being analysis
The Well-Being analysis needs to be done
in focus group.
• The community will then segregate the families in the
village into very poor, poor, middle and highvillage into very poor, poor, middle and high
categories.
• The criteria for categorizing the people in the village
will be decided by the people themselves.
• There will be broad criteria which will be the guiding
factor.
9. Triangulation
• Well being analysis exercise will be repeated
in second focus group discussion.
• The PIP team will compare the results of the
first group
• In case of discrepancy those cards with
unclear categorization alone will be selected
and the exercise will be repeated with the
third group.
Criteria adopted for Identification of target poor
1) Senior citizens, Widows, deserted women with meager subsistence income and without social support,
2) Orphaned children and child labourers
3) Poor nomadic communities3) Poor nomadic communities
4) HIV positive persons
5)Transsexual living without social support
6) Persons with chronic illness which disable them from taking up physical labour.
7)Any other marginalized individuals defined by community.
10. Documentation
• All information collected during the PIP process has to be neatly documented including photos documented including photos where possible.
• Social mapping should be drawn
in the charts
• Individual PIP cards must be
collected from the village persons
11. Displaying Target List
The PIP list will consistnames of
1.Very poor families,
2.Poor Families,
3.Disabled, ( This will be tentative list and will be finalized only when medically certified)
4.Vulnerable persons (only from the Very Poor families)
12. Approval of Gram Sabha

vulnerable and disabled
