At present it has six Professors, one Associate Professor and two Assistant Professors exclusively for Tamil. In addition, the Department accommodates one Associate Professor of Malayalam and one Assistant Professor of Fine Arts. It has the pride of having the Faculty members with a Sahitya Academy Award, UGC Research Award, CIIL (Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore) Post Doctoral Award and Alexander von Humboldt Post Doctoral Award. The Department enjoys the honor of tie-up with the CICT (Central Institute of Classical Tamil, Chennai) and CIIL (Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore) and the collaboration lays the ground for frequent conferences, seminars, workshops and interaction with eminent scholars of various disciplines. Currently the Department has a rich silhouette for Comparative Literature, Folklore Studies and Media Studies with Eighty eight M.A. and M.Phil. students. Fifty research scholars (UGC-JRF 20, UGC- RGNF – 2, CICT – 2 and non stiffened scholars – 26) are working for their Ph.D. The Cell for Culture and Arts regularly exposes the students in various innovative activities, such as Media Exposures and Exhibitions. It organizes evening classes in dance, music, drama and fine arts for all the students of the University. The faculties work on wide range of Tamil Studies, such as Comparative Indian Literature, Modern Literature, Cankam Literature, Folklore, Linguistics, Grammar, Literary Criticism, Feminism, Mass Communication, Cultural Studies, Anthropological History, Performance Studies, Translations, Tamil Computing, Internet Tamil, Art and Architectural History. The Faculties are regularly engaged in presenting papers in conferences, authoring books, publishing articles in Journals both in national and international levels. Though academic teaching is main aspect, frequent treads are taken to spout the talent of students through debates, elocution, poem writing, essay writing and literary competitions are conducted. Students are initiated to participate in Tamil oriented programes in the mass media, many awards and medals have been won. The departmental forum meets every week in order to discuss the recent trends and developments in their specialized research areas. Once in three years the syllabi of the various programmes offered by the Department is revised in order to suit the needs of the stakeholders. In addition to teaching and research the Department actively engaged in the extension activities of the University during the Village Placement Program every year. Ours is the only University in Tamil Nadu which follows the three language formula by which all the students of undergraduate program learn Hindi as a language in addition to Tamil and English.

Department of Tamil

Profile

The Department comprises Malayalam, Fine Arts and Cell for Culture and Arts. At present it has six

stressing the importance of changing European taste in the evaluation of Indian art […] the material collected isimpressive, the references to the literary tradition are vast and exhaustive, the iconographical interpretations are well-

grounded and rich in detail […] It is my opinion that, once it is published, it will remain for a long time a fundamental

reference took for Nayaka architecture and iconography” (Rome 1999)
