Directorof Work

by Casey A. Fletcher, 32° KCCH

As our new year un-folds, let us pause to payhomage to Illustrious C.Donald Prosser 33° for hisyears of service as theValley of Tampa's Directorof Work. His efforts havebeen tireless, his contribu-

tions immeasurable and the results laudatory.Brother Prosser, we both commend you and thankyou.

Preparations for our Spring Reunion on April 11and 18 are well underway. A listing of degrees to beconferred can be found elsewhere in this Bulletin.Specific start times for degrees will be posted laterto our website and communicated to the DegreeMasters.

Notably, we will confer the 29th Degree, ScottishKnight of St. Andrew, which depicts a foundinglegend of our Fraternity. A members' break-outeducational session on the 15th Degree, Knight ofthe East, Sword or Eagle, is being planned.

As we recruit new members, practice our linesand otherwise make ready ourselves, let us pauseand reflect upon our purposes. The Reunion inductsnew members, yes. But the Reunion's degrees areour principal way of teaching and learning, ofunderstanding what it means to be a Scottish RiteMason.

A few Brothers have seen all twenty-nine de-grees, many have experienced half to two-thirds ofthem; all have seen at least five. However, none ofus can rightly claim to understand them all, howthey point back to the Blue Lodge and how theyweave together to provide sage advice and counsel. Therefore, the Reunion is for all of us.

An important word in Freemasonry is “incul-cate.” It means to learn by repetition. In ScottishRite Masonry that means, among other things, re-attending our degrees to refresh our memories, toreinforce previous lessons learned and to capturewhat we may have previously missed. The words inour degrees will be the same each time. However, the meanings we derive from them change anddevelop. As Scottish Rite Masons, we learn and

grow by repetitively attending our degrees. We always hope to have a large class of candi-

dates (and your assistance in making it happen isearnestly solicited) but we should remember that, really, we're all still “candidates” in life. We havemuch to learn.

Looking forward to seeing a full house in April, Iremain your humble and obedient servant.

To briefly retrace the actions during 1915 in theValley of Tampa. The First Convocation of 1915was completed on April 9, 1915 with 37 new Mas-ters of the Royal Secret consecrated by Ill. 33° OlinS. Wright Deputy of the Supreme Council. The

Amos 4:6-13

There are signs every-where we look. We noticethem while we are driving(I hope); they remind usof the change of seasons, the upcoming holidays, the reconciliation of abrother, the greeting of a friend. Each and everysign has a meaning: for example; we are enteringSpring, a term derived from the springing up ofvegetation, the forming of new blossoms on thetrees, the longer hours of daylight and the warmerweather. It is a time for new life and growth. Naturehas provided these signs for us to help us preparefor what is ahead. If we listen and react appropri-ately we will have a good year. If we don't we mayhave a very lean year.

Amos warned the people of Israel of the dangerof failing to see the judgments of God as signs andreminded them that they needed to change theirways. God's words, spoken through Amos, calledthem sternly to repentance. God's thoughts andwords with promises of love and mercy provide theinsight and power to change our cycles of inad-equate behavior. We must be receptive to the signsand react accordingly.

Within our Scottish Rite we have been seeingsigns which indicate we need to make somechanges. Our membership is decreasing each year. Each and every one of us needs to get out andexpound on the Masonic education received fromthe degrees, the comradery among our members andthe work being done through our foundation. AsScottish Rite Masons, we can surely respond to thesigns before us and make our Scottish Rite growand prosper and eliminate the lean years.

Remember the words of an old philosopher,“Insanity is doing the same thing over and overagain and expecting different result.” Let's startsome new trends. Let's make a change by our up-coming Reunion on April 11 and 18.

Flagship Charity Committee, a position he has heldbeginning in 2012. He has also served as the StateAdministrator in 2013 and 2014.

Our Venerable Master is a member of ManateeRiver Chapter No. 18 RAM, Bradentown CouncilNo. 9 R&SM and Trinity Commandery No. 16. Hehas presided over all three York Rite bodies andcurrently serves as District Deputy Grand Commanderfor the Grand Commandery of Florida. He became aMaster of the Royal Secret in the Valley of Tampa onNovember 8, 2008.

He is a member of Sahib Shrine, becoming a noblein 2006. He is a member of their Past Master's Unit, having served as President in 2014. second Convocation was completed on October 29,1915 with Ill. Olin S. Wright 33° Deputy once againconsecrating 48 New Masters of the Royal Secret.Ill. Wright 33° was always provided accommoda-tions at the DeSoto Hotel during Convocations. Itwas announced that Ill. Brother Albert Pike's “Mor-als and Dogma,” could be purchased for $2, andindividual Patents at a cost of $6.50 each.It wasannounced that Sovereign Grand Commander Ill.George F. Moore 33° had reappointed Ill. Olin S.Wright 33° as Deputy for Florida. The followingBrothers were Coroneted 33° Honorary during theSupreme Council Session in 1915, Ill. J. L. Young 33°,Ill. A. S. Scheider 33° and Ill. W. V. Cole 33°. TheLadies of the Order of the Eastern Star graciouslyassisted the Valley of Tampa by assisting in cookingall the meals for the members, during both Convo-cations.

On the world front, World War I was in its fullbloody battles, killing millions with the ImperialEmpires of Germany and Austria locked into trenchwarfare against the Imperial Empires of GreatBritain, France and Russia, bearing the greatest lossof lives. Airplanes had suddenly became weapons ofwar, and it would be 20 years before they becametransportation for the public.

In Memoriam“Sunset and evening star, and one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar, when I put outto sea, but such a tide as moving seems asleep, too full for sound and foam, when thatwhich drew from out the boundless deep turns again home. Twilight and evening bell, and after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell, when I embark; for tho’from out our bourne of Time and Place the flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilotface to face when I have crossed the bar.” – Tennyson
