ascensionA MOUNTAIN HOME in ESTES PARK, CO.

ARCH 206 - Elton Abbott3 WEEKS

Nestled into the scenic vistas near Rocky Mountain National Park, this home serves as the vacation destination for an author and his wife. Divided into four primary spaces circumambulating around a central entrance void, not only does the building form ascend the mountain, but the circulation of the architecture mimics the rise as well.

>The structure incorporates a raumplan, which offers diagonal views between the floor plates of the structure.

>To enhance the quantity and quality of the exterior views, the plan was bent around the West side of the building, which then became the void space used as the entrance point.

>Every floor plate has an excellent view to the exterior, and still maintains a raumplan interior quality.

millican pavilion

One of six signature buildings for the newly planned Millican rural community, this pavilion is designed to allow the community to gather and subsequently foster an amicable and safe environment.

Situated on the edge of a cul-de-sac path, smaller picnic shelters are clustered around the main structure. These extra shelters create a buffer around the central pavilion and further enhance the viability as a community refuge.

black & white composition

The first of four projects which explore the word “tenacious” as a progenitor for design.

Using only a finite number of specific shapes placed within a grid, the word must be evoked. To represent tenacity, the combating positive and negative space is locked in combat, vying for dominance in the composition, yet neither achieves victory.

This similar struggle between forces will carry out through the next 3 projects.

Building upon the interpretation of tenacious begun in the black and white composition, the cube defines tenacity by utilizing three-dimensional forms which create a deep, cavernous interior.

Strong, triangulinear forms are imposed upon one another, pushing and fighting for a presence within the space.

While not safe by any means, the cube calls to the intrepid adventurer, willing him to wander the depths of its form.

As a representation of the cube, the gray scale interprets the mood of the cube into two dimensions using value.

The rendering depicts a stolen glance into the journey of a lone adventurer seeking out the depths of a cavern. Dark and treacherous, there are not many who would be brave enough to travel into the deep and mysterious fissure.

living environment

As the final representation of the word tenacious, the living space located in Bryan contains a tension balanced by the opposing forces of the built and natural.

The structure’s strong angular lines and form thrust into the site, imposing itself into the space. Yet, the natural environment pushes back with equal force in the rugged pseudo-canyon that envelopes the built structure.

modular industrial design

Cut from a single four-by-six foot sheet of quarter-inch plywood and designed with versatility and practicality in mind, the three cubes can be used in conjunction or discretely to realize any number of tasks that might be required of this furniture.

With multiple connection points along the edges of each cube, possibilities for different, unforeseen structures exist.

micro dwelling

Designed with the future in mind, this underwater dwelling takes on the two largest obstacles facing architecture: limited space and sustainability.

To address the first issue, a rotating interior wall system is implemented. Instead of moving from space to space as in a traditional building, the space moves around the user, minimizing the size of the building needed.

To address sustainability, the rotating interior concept is continued through the outside of the building into turbine blades that run the length of the house, transforming the dwelling into a kinetic-hydropower generator.

sustainability>function as a generator of form

>Beginning with the idea of a hydro turbine as a means for power, the movement of the water around the structure influenced the form of the pod.

>The rotation of the turbine transitioned to a more propeller-like form, translating the rotation onto a vertical plane perpendicular to the water flow.

“kelly”

Inspired by the sale of my dad’s airplane, Kelly, this was my gift to him to commemorate the many years we had spent flying with her. I had grown up with the airplane, and aviation is something that I’ll ways love. This work is almost a cathartic effort of mine to capture the beauty of the machine and what it has meant to me through the years.
