Indian tourism surges in first halfIndia's tourism industry con�nued to experience strong double-digit growth in the first half of 2017. According to the latest figures from India's Ministry of Tourism, the country

welcomed a total of 4.89 million interna�onal arrivals during the six-month period, 17.2% more than in the first half of 2016. This growth was par�ally driven by the popularity of

the e-tourist visa scheme; India welcomed 717,000 visitors on these visas in the first half of 2017, which marks a sharp 52.0% jump compared to the first six months of 2016. This

means that almost 15% of interna�onal visitors entering India during this period were issued e-tourist visas.

Interna�onal tourism surges strongly in 2017Interna�onal tourism con�nued to strengthen in the first quarter of 2017, as travellers shrugged off security and economic concerns to cross borders in increasing numbers.

According to the latest data from the UNWTO, interna�onal overnight stays increased 6% to 369 million in the first three months of the year – an absolute increase of 21m visitors

compared to Q1 2016. The January-April period usually represents about 28% of the yearly total and includes major travel periods such as the Chinese New Year and Easter holidays.

Interna�onal arrivals increased in all major global regions, with the Middle East (+10%) and Africa (+8%) seeing especially strong growth. Europe (+6%), Asia Pacific (6%) and the

Americas (+4%) also con�nued to see robust gains. In terms of sub-regions, North Africa (+18%) recovered strongly from a poor Q1 last year, but the Caribbean's (+2%) was rela�vely

weak. In Asia Pacific, South Asia (+14%) led the way, followed by Oceania (+7%), Southeast Asia (+6%) and Northeast Asia (+5%).

Preferred Hotels & Resorts add nine hotels in Asia PacificPreferred has con�nued to expand its global collec�on of proper�es with the addi�on of 23 new member hotels, nine of which are located in the Asia Pacific region. In the last few

months, the world's largest hotel representa�on company has added two more hotels in Japan, two in China, two in Vietnam and two in India, along with one property in the

Maldives. These included the 267-room Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo, the former Four Seasons property which is set in five hectares of gardens; the 376-room Windsor Plaza Hotel, which

marks Preferred's entry into Ho Chi Minh City; the 333-room Minyoun Chengdu Dongda Hotel, which was recently voted one of China's “Top 10 Glamorous Hotels in 2017”; and the

soon-to-open 312-room Chedi Mumbai, which will become GHM's first hotel in India.

Onam is a tradi�onal ten day harvest fes�val that marks the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali. It's a fes�val rich in culture and heritage. In honor of warrior Goddess Durga, beau�fully handcra�ed statues of Durga are installed in podiums in almost every lane of the city during this fes�val. People flock to the streets to view the goddess statues amid mesmerizing light shows, drumming, and aroma�c food stalls. On the last day of the fes�val, the statues are paraded around the city before being submerged in the river. If you want to experience Kolkata Durga Puja, ideally you should be in the city at least a week before the fes�val starts so you can see the finishing touches being put on the idols of the goddess.

Amari makes debut in Sri LankaOnyx Hospitality Group has launched a brand new Amari hotel the historic city of Galle, marking the upscale brand's entry into Sri Lanka. The 172-room Amari Galle is a beachfront

hotel located on the main Colombo-Galle road. All rooms feature private balconies with ocean views, while the 360m² presiden�al suite offers a roof terrace and private plunge pool.
