Dear Mrs Fung, 7.1a I am writing to reply to your questions about your upcoming visit. Please refer to the schedule a as this provides some of the answers to your questions. In addition, we recommend students 7.1b 7.1c bring sunscreen and insect repellent, and a packed lunch if they have special dietary 7.2a requirements. Regarding wheelchair access, we have ramps at the lecture hall, cafe and hides, 7.2b 7.2c

and wheelchair-accessible toilets. There are wide, level footpaths, with slopes instead of 7.2d steps. The only activity Terry Wan will not be able to take part in is wading in the mangroves. 7.3a

Regarding follow-up work, students can use the results of their survey of water life to write a 7.3b 7.3c

report. We also provide additional quizzes on plant and animal life and activity sheets about

mangrove and forest animals. 7.4

Please email [email protected] if you have any more questions.

Kind regards,

Eddie Kwok

Dear Mr Lo,

I am writing to reply to your email and let you know about our plans for the video. 81a

We would like to begin the video with an overhead view of the mangroves and forest 8.1b

habitats. Next, there will be an interview with Agatha Chu in the lecture hall. This will be 8.1c

followed by a tour of the mangroves in a boat, with an introduction to the work we do. We 8.1d

would like to have an underwater sequence in the mangroves after that. The last sequence 8.1e

we need to film will be in the forest animals hide. 8.2a 8.2b

We will need a drone and drone-mounted camera for the overhead view, a motion steady 8.2c

camera to use on the boat, and a waterproof camera for the underwater sequence. 8.3a 8.3b

While at the centre, please keep noise to a minimum to avoid disturbing animals and avoid 8.3c

stepping off footpaths unless instructed. Also, please take everything with you: do not

litter.

Kind regards,

Eddie Kwok

Dear Mr Chan, 9.1a

I am writing to invite you to be the presenter of our video, Fragile Fringes: Hong Kong’s

Mangroves. 9.2a

We would like you to be the presenter because you are a popular presenter of nature

documentaries, and have written and presented documentaries on a similar theme, such as 9.2b

Wetlands of the World and Asia’s Amphibians. 9.3a

As presenter, we would like you to provide the voiceover for the opening sequence,

featuring an overhead view of the mangroves and forest. You would then conduct an 9.3b 9.3c

interview with the centre’s manager, Agatha Chu. You would provide a voiceover for some 9.3d

underwater footage of the mangroves, and present a tour of our forest animals hide. 9.3e

Finally, you would provide a voiceover for the closing sequence of the video. 9.4

If you are interested, please email [email protected] to discuss your fee.

Many thanks for your time.

Model writing

10.1a. Mangroves refers to species of trees and shrubs that have adapted to life partly in and 10.1b partly out of water. The term mangrove also refers to a type of ecosystem. Mangroves are

coastal wetlands, where there is a mix of freshwater and seawater. 10.2a Hong Kong Mangrove Conservation Centre is located in the North District of the New 10.2b 10.2c Territories. Manager Agatha Chu is the centre’s only paid employee. She relies on a team of

volunteers to keep the centre running. 10.3a

The centre’s work involves maintaining and monitoring mangrove habitats in Hong Kong. 10.3b

The centre’s volunteers keep track of the numbers of certain species that live in the mangrove

habitats. By recording the numbers of these indicator species, it is possible to judge the 10.3c

health of the mangroves. In addition to conservation work, the centre runs educational 10.3d

activities for schools and holds open days for the general public. 10.4a

By doing this, the centre works towards its two main aims: to prevent the destruction of the 10.4b

fragile mangrove ecosystem, and to educate the next generation so that they can continue

this important work.

Appendix 1

Language = 5 marks

Marks Language

5 Data File Manipulation

Generally successful in adapting phrases from the Data File to create grammatically

correct sentences through: word formation changes, tense changes, pronoun changes etc.

Own language • A range of accurate sentence structures with a grasp of simple and complex sentences. • Grammar mainly accurate with occasional common errors that do not affect overall

clarity. • Spelling and punctuation are mostly correct.

4 Data File Manipulation

Sometimes successful in adapting phrases from the Data File to create grammatically

correct sentences. This is done through some of: word formation changes, tense changes,

pronoun changes etc.

Own language • A range of accurate sentence structures with some attempts to use more complex

sentences. • Grammatical errors occur in more complex structures but overall clarity not affected. • Spelling and punctuation are sufficiently accurate to convey meaning.

3 Data File Manipulation

Occasionally successful in adapting phrases from the Data File to create grammatically

correct sentences, though more often errors occur due to failing to change the original

texts to the requirements of his/her own text.

Own language • Simple sentences are generally accurately constructed. Occasional attempts are made

to use more complex sentences. Structures used tend to be repetitive in nature. • Grammatical errors sometimes affect meaning. • Most common words are spelt correctly, with basic punctuation being accurate.

2 Data File Manipulation

Writing characterized by occasional attempts to adapt language from Data File or by

chunks taken verbatim from the Data File.

Own language • Short simple sentences may be accurate. • Grammatical errors sometimes affect meaning. • Spelling of simple words is correct, more complex ones not, with basic punctuation

often faulty.

1 • Writing characterized by being a series of chunks mainly taken verbatim from the Data File.

• Frequent errors in sentence structures, spelling and/or word usage which make understanding impossible.

0 • Writing consisting of chunks copied directly from the Data File • Large number of errors in sentence structures, spelling and/or word usage which make

understanding impossible. • Candidate’s work not providing enough evidence to be able to award ‘1’

Appendix 2

Coherence and Organization = 2 mark

Marks Coherence and Organization

2 • Overall coherence of text good with a clear focus on task throughout. • Relations between main points and supporting points usually clear. • Cohesive ties used to enhance coherence when necessary.

1 • Overall coherence reasonable • Reasonably clear focus throughout task • Generally clear relations between main ideas and supporting details • Coherence generally enhanced by use of cohesive ties

0 • Overall coherence of text is weak. • Supporting details generally not clearly related to main points. • Cohesive ties used contribute little to the coherence of the text.

OR • Not enough evidence in candidate’s work to be able to award ‘1’.

Appendix 3

Task 10: Appropriacy = 2 mark

Marks Appropriacy

2 • Register, tone and style generally appropriate through manipulation of parts of Data

File and own language. • The candidate has produced a text appropriate for task.

1 • Register, tone and style reasonably appropriate to the task requirements through some manipulation of Data File material and use of own language

• The use of tone inconsistent

0 • Little or no evidence of an ability to manipulate register, tone or style in order to

produce an appropriate text. • The candidate has written a text which is characterized by having copied chunks of the

Data File indiscriminately. Does not give the impression of the writer’s own text

written to fulfil the task.
