You’re looking for a new career opportunity; you have a lot of experience you want to tell your potential employer about and a

lot of questions to ask. The first step is normally asking your friends in the industry how their employer is treating them, and then either filling out an application or calling to complete a pre-qualification screening. Now is the time to put your best foot forward and demonstrate that you are exactly the type of driver they have been looking for. You’re calling the company because you’ve heard about their great reputation and you’re excited about the opportunity. Here are some dos and don’ts from the recruiter’s perspective.

DOS: Be sure to explain the vast variety of driving experience you have, tell them about any endorsements you’ve added to your license, and brag about your exceptional safety record. A driver recruiter is first going to need to ensure that you meet their company’s hiring criteria and safety standards. They also must ensure that you are going to stay around a while, as they plan to make a significant investment in your training, on-boarding, and sign-on bonus expenses and want you to in turn to invest in a long-term career with their company. Although it is very common for drivers to hop from job to job, now more than ever recruiters in the transportation industry are looking for drivers with more stable, tenured work history. Because of this, it is very important to be honest with yourself and your recruiter about what you really want in a driving job that will be a long-term fit for your lifestyle.

DON’TS: Don’t give too much information such as telling the recruiter about old accidents that have fallen off your MVR when they only asked about major accidents in

the last 3 years. Don’t share too much personal medical information; all your potential employer needs to know about your health issue is that you are fit enough to obtain your DOT medical certification. Don’t complain about former employers. Sure, maybe your last boss was an unreasonable jerk or perhaps the dispatcher was being unfair with his load assignments, but this is not the time to dwell on these things. Your potential employers will absolutely cringe at the sound of these types of complaints about former or current employers. On the other hand, it may work in your favor to tell them about any safety or compliance issues that caused you to leave your employer. Maybe you’ve moved jobs a lot in the last couple of years for legitimate reasons such as unfulfilled promises, late paychecks, or a company putting your livelihood at risk by force dispatching you in unsafe equipment or in violation of DOT hours of service regulations. These are all valid points that potential employers will respect you for, as long as you do not dwell on the negative in the past.

REMEMBER: Sum up your driving experience, credentials, and safety record in a nice, straight-forward package. Focus on the new opportunity rather than dwelling on old employers, and be sure to not reveal too much personal or medical information that is not pertinent to your qualifications for the job. The most important thing you can do is ensure the job is going to be a long-term fit for you and your family’s needs, so that you and the recruiter can get the most out of your investments. After all, you are also making an investment in your new employer. If you choose wisely, you never know where your driving career could lead you within the transportation industry. •
