The Personal Archives of Tannatt William Edgeworth DAVID (1858-1934) Born in Wales, David studied at Magdalen College School, Oxford (1870-1876) and Oxford University from which he graduated as Bachelor of Arts in 1880. In 1881, David carried out geological research in Wales. In 1882, he accepted the position of Assistant Geological Surveyor to the NSW Government; he worked on the NSW Geological Survey, especially mapping and correlating the coalfields of NSW. In 1886, David and his assistant, GA Stonier, discovered the South Maitland coalfield in the Hunter River valley. The University of Sydney Senate, at its meeting of 2 March 1891, appointed David to lecture on geology during Lent Term. He was appointed Professor of Geology and Physical Geography at the Senate meeting on 18 May 1891. This decision was opposed by the Committee in England appointed to select a Professor. On retiring in December 1924, David was appointed Emeritus Professor (Senate Minutes 22 Dec 1924). In 1900, David was awarded fellowship of the Royal Society of London after organising successful expeditions to Funafuti, a coral atoll in the Pacific Ocean, then in the British colony of the Gilbert and Ellise Islands, now in Tuvalu. This followed the failure of an expedition organised by the Royal Society in 1896. The objective of the expeditions was to bore a column of coral to a depth of 600 feet. It was hoped that analysis of such a column would provide evidence to help support or refute Charles Darwin's theory on the origin of coral atolls. Numerous works authored by David were published by scientific and daily presses. A major work, "Geological Map of the Commonwealth of Australia" was published in 1932. Glaciation was of especial interest to David. He was a member of the Glacial Research Committee of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In 1907-09, David took leave from the University to accompany the British Antarctic Expedition led by Ernest Shackleton. In the company of Douglas Mawson and Alistair Mackay, he was the first to reach the Magnetic South Pole. After retiring from the University, David continued work on a treatise on the geology of Australia, a work he failed to complete. In the late 1920s, he became involved in a controversy on the fossil nature of samples of South Australian rock. David was an accomplished fund-raiser. For example, he used his influence to obtain essential funds to enable Shackleton's expedition to Antarctica in 1907-09 to proceed. Subsequently, he gave public lectures to raise further funds for this expedition and funds for the Australasian Antarctic Expedition led by Douglas Mawson in 1911-14. In 1885, David married Caroline Martha Mallett, then Principal of the NSW Government Department of Public Instruction's Hurlstone Training College for Women. In 1916, he served in battlefields in France and Belgium. The Personal Archives of Tannatt William Edgeworth DAVID (1858-1934)

Born in Wales, David studied at Magdalen College School, Oxford (1870-1876) and Oxford University from which he graduated as Bachelor of Arts in 1880.

Awards included FRS (1900), honorary DSc degrees from universities of Oxford (1911), Manchester, Wales, Cambridge, Sydney, Bigsby Medal (1899) and Wollaston Medal (1920) both

Series 1 British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09: Erebus/Magnetic Pole journeys - scripts authored by David +61 2 9351 5350

Date Range: 1909? - 1908

Accessions: 1/24, 1/69Quantity: 0.07Item List: no

Series Description:

Annotated typescripts of the "Narrative of the Northern Party" (5cm), original handwritten folios (1.5 cm) comprisingmeteorological notes made on the northern journey to the Magnetic South Pole; the latter are dated 10 October to 27November 1908.

Also manuscript describing the ascent of Mt Erebus; this includes records of barometric pressure readings dated 5th to9th March 1908.

The British Antarctic Expediton of 1907-09 was described by Ernest Shackleton in "The Heart of the Antarctic"volume 1 page 5 as "entirely my own venture". It was funded by the governments of Britain ( 20,000 pounds sterling),Australia (6000 pounds sterling) and New Zealand (a ship), by the proceeds of public lectures and the sale of the book"The Heart of the Antarctic" describing the Expedition.

The Northern party comprised David, Douglas Mawson, and Alistair Mackay. The party left the Expedition's winterquarters at Cape Royds on the west coast of Ross Island on McMurdo Sound (latitude 77.5 degrees south) on 3rdOctober 1908 and walked north along the coast of South Victoria Land to Drygalski ice barrier (latitude approx 75.5degrees south) and then north-west to latitude 72.25 degrees south and longitude 155 degrees 16 minutes, estimated bythe party to be the location of the South Magnetic Pole. The party returned to their depot on Drygalski Glacier on 3February 1909 where they boarded the ship "Nimrod" at nearby Relief Inlet. The Northern Party had trekked a distanceof 1260 miles (over 1700 kilometres), dragging their sledges by hand. The objectives of the journey as specified byShackleton were to carry out a geological survey of the coast of Victoria Land and to prospect for minerals of economicvalue in Dry Valley, to determine the position of the South Magnetic Pole and to journey to the pole if resourcespermitted, and to take possession of these lands for the British Empire by hoisting the British flag.

Date Range: 1910? - 1910?

Accessions: 1/24, 1/69Quantity: 0.07Item List: no

Series Description:

Observations on geology - handwritten, mainly in ink, probably for joint papers with R E Priestly (quantity : 1 cm);also notes for addresses/lectures, a carbon copy of a handwritten list of photographs (28 pages), a four page handwrittenscript entitled "Retrospect" and other papers relating to this expedition.

It was impossible to differentiate script written for the Stockholm Conference* from script for other papers co-authoredwith R E Priestly. Hence, manuscript in David's hand has been arranged in this series; typescript which was probablyused for the publication by W Heinemann, London 1914 entitled "British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09 - Reports onScientific Investigations - Geology" is in series 3, and unidentified typescript in series 6.

*The Stockholm Conference refers to the International Geological Conference XIth Session held in Stockholm in 1910.David's paper, in collaboration with Priestly and Mawson, was read by Professor Sollas (refer to series 7: letterreceived by David dated 11 January 1911).

Regarding original order: it is assumed that David kept papers relating to Antarctica together. Some of the papers hadbeen boxed by subject viz "Antarctica", "Funafuti", "Geology of Australia", "fossils", "War", "lecture notes", "maps andplans".

Series 7 British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09/ Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911-14/ BANZARE 1929-31 - correspondence

Date Range: 1934 - 1894

Accessions: 1/24, 1/69Quantity: 0.20Item List: no

Series Description:

Comprises drafts and copies of letters authored by David between 1908 and 1914 (quantity: 1 cm) and letters receivedby David (date range: 1907-1934) pertaining to the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-09, the Australasian AntarcticExpedition 1911-14 and the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE)1929-1931. Correspondents include Douglas Mawson, Raymond Priestly, Orme Masson, J Davis. Refer to index toauthors of letters in series 32 for other letters written by Mawson and Priestly. The 1894 material is a manuscript copyof a letter sent to Government Astronomer Russell.

One-third of the correspondence was received by David as a member of the Australian Committee of BANZARE; thiscomprises letters addressed to David from the Australian Government Department of External Affairs and copies ofBANZARE records. It appears that David was not a founding member of the Committee. The purpose of BANZAREwas hydrographic survey, annexation of land for the British Empire, and scientific study especially meteorological andoceanographic and investigation into faunal resources for the purpose of economic exploitation. By instruction of thePrime Minister, S Bruce, 12 September 1929 (ref 1), all written records, photographs and specimens of the expeditionbecame the property of BANZARE.

A significant proportion of the correspondence pertains to the 1911-14 expedition led by Mawson. The objectives ofthis expedition were scientific. Because Mawson did not return to Australia in summer 1912, administration of theexpedition at this time was carried out by David. David was also active in raising funds for the expedition. Otherrecords pertaining to the Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911-14 are located in the papers of foundation Professorof Biology at the University of Sydney W A Haswell: Archives P168 series 4.

Series 10 Funafuti (Tuvalu) Coral Boring Expeditions 1897-98 - original letters by David

Date Range: 1901 - 1897

Accessions: 1/24Quantity: 0.01Item List: no

Series Description:

Letters in David's hand. Most letters are addressed to BG Corney , Resident Medical Officer in Fiji. Drafts ofcorrespondence in David's hand are in series 11.How the letters came into custody of the Geology Department ofSydney University is not known. Series 12 contains letters addressed to Corney by persons other than David.

Funafuti is an island in the Pacific Ocean at 8 degrees 30 minutes south latitude and 179 degrees 13 minutes eastlongitude, now in Tuvalu and formerly part of Britain's colony, Gilbert and Ellice Islands. David organised the Secondand Third Expeditions to Funafuti in 1897-98. The first expedition to Funafuti, in 1896, was organised by the BritishAssociation for th Advancement of Science and the Royal Society of London with the purpose of examining thestructure of a coral atoll by analysing the contents of a column bored to a depth of at least 600 feet. Charles Darwin hadproposed a hypothesis to explain the origin of coral atolls. This hypothesis was challenged. It was hoped that theexpedition to Funafuti would clarify the situation.

The first expedition to Funafuti was a failure owing to the use of inappropriate machinery for drilling. The RoyalSociety of London then contacted David and Professor Anderson Stuart with the aim of having the British colony ofNew South Wales organise another expedition to Funafuti. Funds for the Second Expedition to Funafuti came initallyfrom Miss Eadith Walker of "Yaralla" in Concord. They were supplemented by the NSW Government and othersources.

Series 21 Treatise on geology of Australia - working papers

Date Range: 1934 - 1920

Accessions: 1/24,1337.Quantity: 0.40Item List: no

Series Description:

Half the papers in the series are in handwriting ascribed to David. The other papers comprise typescript withannotations of various length ascribed to David and others. The material consists of documentation relating to David'sproposed"Geology of Australia", and was compiled by David over many years, especially after 1924. Some data was used in"Geological Map of Australia/ Explanatory Notes" published 1932; see series 22. Scripts, maps & photographs weresent to David by geologists in Australia & overseas. Scripts are arranged in series 28, maps in series 29, photographsin series 36; other related series: 30, 32.

The arrangement of the material is ascribed in part to W R Browne, a member of the Department of Geology. AfterDavid's death, Browne was commissioned to complete the "Geology of Australia"; and the book was published in 1950by Edward Arnold & Co, after extensive modification, of text, which had become outdated with the passage of time.Extra large folios and manuscript ascribed to David have been itemised as follows:

Item 1 : 24 extra large documents ascribed in part or in toto to David, including a 14 folio draft manuscript for"Geology of Australia" and maps/plans with annotations by David.

Item 2 : Maps and geological sections (10 extra large folios) - ascribed in toto to David or annotated by David.

Item 3 : Tables, in handwriting ascribed to David or in typescript, some with annotations (0.5 cm of extra largedocuments).Items 4-9 : Manuscripts in David's hand - appear to be drafts for his book, and other notes. The subjects of manuscriptsin items 4-8 are listed on the outside of each item. Item 9 contains very fragile folios.

Items 10-21: annotated typescripts.

Item 22: Memoranda of Agreement between David and Edward Arnold Ltd, 1914-1926. These documents werearchival estrays, and had been in the custody of W.R.Browne and T.G.Vallance.

Accessions: 1/24Quantity: 0.20Item List: no

Series Description:

The longest documents are geological sections from the Port of Newcastle to Moon Island situated at the ocean entranceto Lake Macquarie, length :4 metres (item 1), and from Wyong to Raymond Terrace, length : 2.3 metres (item 3).Both are ascribed to David.

Although of the all documents appear to be originals, about half are ascribed to persons other than David.Mostdocuments pertain to the Newcastle region, some to Bulli and Sydney. Numerical data relates to bores in the HunterRiver Valley. There is a detailed "calculation as to probable quantity of coal under the holding of the Sydney HarbourCollieries Co." (5 folios, item 6).

Items not mentioned above :2. - section Redhead-Newcastle; borehole data;4. - manuscripts/annotated typescripts partly ascribed to David;5. - authored by persons other than David.

Related series include series 25 (field notebooks), 26 item 2 (a volume of "Geological maps and sections of the coalmeasures in the Hunter River District" by TWE David, 32 (correspondence), and 35 (photographs) especially item 1,and series 52 (press reports). It was decided to arrange these records in one series rather than leave them in the series ofmiscellaneous working papers and plans because of David's major contribution to the coal industry in NSW before hisappointment to the University. As Assistant Geological Surveyor with the Government of NSW, he systematicallymapped and correlated coalfields in the British colony.

Accessions: 1/24Quantity: 1.35Item List: yes

Series Description:

The records especially document David's geological surveys for coal in the Hunter valley - Lake Macquarie region ofNew South Wales. Before David became Professor of Geology at the University of Sydney in 1891, he worked as ageologist with the NSW government, commencing on his arrival in Australia in late 1882. It could be argued that theNSW Government owns copyright to field notebooks compiled during David's employment with the NSW GeologicalSurvey.

Other records document surveys carried out in Queensland in 1888, 1895, 1910, 1921, 1925, 1929, Tasmania in 1892,1906, 1910-1912, 1921-1923 and 1925, South Australia in 1897, 1901, 1919, 1921, 1924, 1925, 1930 and 1932,Victoria in 1894, 1923 and 1928, in Western Australia in 1910, 1921 and 1925. The earliest notebook pertains toDavid's geological work in the district of his birth, Glamorganshire in Wales. This and some of the other volumescontain illustrations in pencil/ink.Only 5 volumes document David's visits overseas to USA in 1906, South Africa in1925, Britain in 1926.

Field notebooks documenting visits to Funafuti in 1897-1898, to Kosciusko in 1905-1907, and to Antarctica in1908-1909 are arranged in series 12, 20 and 5 respectively. Field notebooks pertaining to David's research into fossilfauna in the Adelaide series of rocks in South Australia from 1929 to 1933 are arranged in series 19.

Series 35 Miscellaneous photographic images.

Date Range: 1931 - 1870

Accessions: 1/24, 1337.Quantity: 0.67Item List: yes

Series Description:

William Rowan Browne arranged at least part of David's collection of photographs after David's death in preparationfor publishing the treatise on the Geology of Australia. The dates of some photographs suggest that Browne added tothe collection, but to what extent is not known. There was clear evidence of original order in the cases of photographsof fossils, economic geology and "antiquity of man". Photographs which did not appear to fit into these categories havebeen arranged mainly according to field trip where possible and geographical location.

Photographs document geological excursions undertaken by David, especially to Central Australia and across theNullarbor in 1921 and to Kosciusko in 1906. Photographs of expeditions to Funafuti and Antarctica are located inseries 9 and 15 respectively. Other photographs depict fossils and other geological subjects mostly in Australia, as wellas economic geology, and Tasmanian and Australian Aboriginal peoples. The latter relate to scripts on the "antiquityof man" (series 24: items 15-17, series 31: item 6, series 40: item 18 and series 50: item 2). Photographs documentingDavid's research on fossils in rocks of the Adelaide series in South Australia are located in series 18.

Many of the photographs are annotated, some by David. Many photographs are not dated; thus very rough estimateshave been made of the approximate decade of the photographs were taken. There are original negatives of somesnapshots, presumably taken by David. In addition, some of the images were archival estrays in the custody ofT.G.Vallance.

Date Range: 1926 - 1892

Accessions: 1/24Quantity: 0.44Item List: yes

Series Description:

The notes are in David's hand. Many of the folios were exceptionally brittle; they were copied onto buffered paper(Archive Text Wove); the originals have not been retained as the paper disintegrated on photocopying.

Most of the notes were written for lectures to students of Geology II and Geology III at the University of Sydney. Thereare few notes written for students in Geology I. The subject with the greatest volume of notes is designated"physiography" by David. The arrangement of the lecture notes is inconsistent to some extent. Most lecture notesidentified as "Geology II" have been arranged chronologically under this heading. Most lecture notes identified as"physiography" have been arranged as a single item, chronologically as far as possible; David re-used andamalgamated portions of previous year's lecture notes and amended his notes.

See series 9 for press cuttings on the Borchgrevnik Expedition to Antarctica annotated by David "Keep for 1st Yearlectures". The series includes brochures and some notes for David's lectures under the auspices of the Sydney UniversityExtension Board. The lecture notes written for a series of lectures given by David at the University of London werewritten for students of Advanced Geology. See also series 20, 24 which probably include notes written for lectures andseries 50 item 2 on "Savagery and Civilisation".

The role of the ANRC in the establishment of the Chair of Anthropology at the University of Sydney is noted in thepresidential address by Charles Anderson to the Royal Society of NSW in 1925 published in volume LIX of the Journalof the Society. The proposal for a Chair of Anthropology in Australia was the outcome of a resolution passed by thePan Pacific Science Congress held in Australia in 1923. The Australian Government "undertook to provide an annualsum of 1000 pounds sterling if the States would subscribe the necessary balance" (page 14). David was the first president of the ANRC. The ANRC was established in 1919 by representatives of the leadingscientific societies in Australia in the form of a provisional council. This was in response to a request from theInternational Research Council which was founded as an outcome of a conference held in 1918 at the Royal Society inLondon.
