Tao (pronounced “Dow”) can be roughly translated into English as path, or the way. It is basically indefinable. It has to be experienced.

It “refers to a power which envelops, surrounds and flows through all things, living and non-living. Taoism currently has about 20 million followers.

Taoism is a philosophical and religious tradition that emphasizes living in harmony with the Tao.and it is a belief system that makes everyone equal and have the same rights.

and is primarily centered in Taiwan, about 30,000 Taoists live in North America; and 1,000 in Canada in 1991 census.

Started as a combination of psychology and philosophy but evolved into a religious faith in 440CE when it was adopted as a state religion. At that time Lao-Tse became popularly venerated as a deity. Taoism, along with Buddhism and Confucianism, became one of the three great religions of China.

With the end of the Ch'ing Dynasty in 1911, state support for Taoism ended. Much of the Taoist heritage was destroyed during the next period of warlordism.

After the Communist victory in 1949, religious freedom was severely restricted. Several million monks were reduced to fewer than 50,000 by 1960.

During the cultural revolution in China form 1966 to 1976, much of the remaining Taoist heritage was destroyed.

Taoism, a religion and philosophy that is over 2000 years old and has an interesting view on life and the way we handle tasks in our lives,and Taoism has had profound influence on Chinese culture in the curse of the centuries.

Founder of Taoism

The founder of Taoism is Lao-Tse.

Believed by many religious historians to be Lao-Tse (604-479 BCE), whose life overlapped that of Confucius (551-479 BCE).

Lao Tse was the creator of Taoism. He was born about 600 BC and lived in the eastern Chou Dynasty. Lao Tse was a philosopher that believed that everything alive was equal.

However other historians suggest that he is a synthsis of a number of historical figures.

1. Tao: literally means"way", but can also be interpreted as road, channel. Te: the active expression of Tao is called Te.2. Wu-wei: refers to any inentional or deliverated action, while wu came the meaning of "there is no.."or " lacking without".3.Naturalness: . It describes the "primordial state" of all things as well as a basic character of the Tao, and is usually associated with spontaneity and creativity.4. Three Treasures: are basic virtues in Taoism comprising compassion, modration and humility. They are also traslated as kindness, simplicity and modesty.

Cosmology

In this belief, the Universe is seen as being in a constant process of re-creating itself, as everything that exists is a mere aspect of life, diluted, it’s indefinite potential.

Cosmology is the study of the nature and origin of the universe, or a theory about it and they can get the power from the nature. Taoist cosmology is based on the beliefs of the School of Naturalists.

Its mean that Tao begets Being, Being begets Heaven and Earth, and the latter begets all the things in the world.The goal of Taoism is a happy life. Lao-tzu believed that this goal could be achieve by living a life in conformity with nature.

The yin & yang symbol represents equality and that every thing is the same, BUT if you wanted to be equal you would have a balanced amount of yin and yang, thats why lots of Chinese doctors believed that lots of illnesses were caused by to much yin or yang.
