TAOISM – Magic in Nature

If like many people, you have heard bits and pieces about Taoism and are curious to know more

about it, here is an opportunity not to be missed. For the first time in Australia, a Taoist Master from

the Wudang Mountain of China will be presenting workshops on “Taoist arts of health and longevity,

meditation, Tai Chi and Qigong” and a FREE presentation on “Taoist lifestyle - living with nature”.

With China’s current prominence in world affairs, there is a growing awareness and interest in Chinese

culture. Taoism in particular is intriguing in that it combined a staggering array of arts that goes from

Feng Shui to spiritual meditation, from martial art to traditional cultural art.

Traditionally meditation was the fundamental way to perceive the Tao. In Taoism however, other

disciplines complement it and must also be mastered. They include music, calligraphy,

painting, and metaphysics before you can be ready for contemplation.

Music is the direct link between the soul and the divine. The body is like a hollow reed, and music

fills it with the song of the gods. Music will calm you, soothe your nerves, tell you of other-

worldliness. Even in the midst of great turmoil, music can bring peace to your heart. No one lives

without music. Playing the flute, for example, trains the mind and qi to act in unison and stimulates

the meridians in the fingertips. Whether you listen or whether you play, music refines your soul. It

is peace, emotion, expression, and the sound of the sacred.

Calligraphy is calming and unifying. The brush is an extension of the hand, and moving it stimulates the

meridians, moves the skeletal system, soothes the nerves, relaxes the mind, and develops the ability to

absorb poetry. By copying poetry, you ponder the nuances and subtleties unnoticeable in reading. The

original intent of the poets and sages are absorbed by tracing their exact strokes. Viewing and copying

calligraphy will tell you what the scriptures mean. The actual act of calligraphy makes you calm, gentle,

rational, and intelligent.

Painting brings the outside world directly into your psyche. As expression, art is the exercise of beauty.

It comes from the heart, not the mind, stimulates compassion and joy, and nourishes the beauty of your

inner soul. Beauty implies appreciation. The painter expresses his appreciation of nature's beauty, but he

also absorbs natural beauty through painting. What the eye sees goes directly into the soul. Thus, both in

Taoist students learn music, calligraph y, and paint ing in addition to a heavy curriculum of philosophy,

anthropology, archaeology, astronomy, meteorology, and the Chinese classics. All are designed to expand his

mind, discipline him, and re fine his temperament. These form the foundations for S piritual Taoist

meditation.
