The Collection includes 250, 7-inch reel-to-reel tapes with source material from the personal collection of Mr. Freeman Kitchens of Drake, Kentucky U.S. postmaster, record collector, owner of Drake Vintage Music & Curios, and founder and president emeritus of the Carter Family Fan Club. The recordings consists of tapes (or tapes of tapes) of 78 rpm commercial recordings, radio transcriptions, airchecks of radio broadcast programs and performances, field recordings of festival performances, and the like. WKU first acquired these tapes in the mid 1970s, as folklorists Burt Feintuch and Lynwood Montell, directed and implemented the acquisition of these sound recordings from Mr. Kitchens. Freeman Kitchens continues to operate his record shop in Drake. The Folklife Archives also hold a small collection of related ephemera from Freeman Kitchens including letters from musicians and scholars, and original copies of the mimeographed journal of the Carter Family Fan Club, the Sunny Side Sentinel. Transcriber has recorded all data as accurately as possible, however researchers are referred to the original collection materials for perfect accuracy. 2. Transcriber only speaks through the use of [square brackets]. Uses of (parentheses) are from the source. 3. Transcriber has not altered names of artists and tape contents. The only case of alteration was made in the “streamlining” of record label abbreviations, as the transcriber encountered many different variations of abbreviations among the materials, which come from a variety of different sources. Refer to the record label index key to determine the associated label. 4. Some record label abbreviations were left unsolved by the transcriber. These are left without an associated record label in the key. 5. Highlighted items are tapes that are perceived to be notable in their contents. Nearly all of the highlighted items have expanded index notes in the “DETAILED FKC INDEX”. 6. Transcriber often used the Internet or other research resources to fill in apparent questions (i.e. searching for the full name of a record label from an abbreviation, often finding correct label through searching with album number and/or song/artist title). A small margin of error may be implied, however transcriber was careful in her assertions. Researchers may always refer back to the original source material. 7. Items noted as “unissued” are taken directly from original tape playlist notes (they were determined “unissued” by the author of the tape on the date of its creation). The contemporary status of their publication is not accounted for. 8. As the recorded materials came from a variety of sources, the transcriber encountered varying levels of detail and information, some more expanded than others. Not all playlist on tapes of commercial recordings included record release detail. 9. An asterisk ( * ) indicates a playlist and tape from record collector Wilson Reeves; others may also be from him, however the transcriber could not indicate so. Transcriber has interpreted the starred playlists to be from Wilson Reeves as indicated by personal/technical notes to Mr.

FREEMAN KITCHENS COLLECTION

The Freeman Kitchens Collection is a recorded sound collection of the Folklife Archives at the Kentucky Museum & Library, Western Kentucky University. The Collection includes 250, 7-inch reel-to-reel tapes with source material from the personal collection of Mr. Freeman Kitchens of Drake, Kentucky – U.S. postmaster, record collector, owner of Drake Vintage Music & Curios, and founder and president emeritus of the Carter Family Fan Club. TRANSCRIBER: Jennifer M. Jameson, M.A. student in Folk Studies, WKU ([email protected]) Under the direction of Dr. Erika Brady ([email protected]), Spring 2011 TECHNICAL HEADNOTES:

(Apparently her performance was in 2 parts, probably to save her strength at age 69. Only the first part was broadcast in July when FM station KPFK broadcast highlights of the 4-day Festival in a series of 10 two-hour programs.) T-571-K [FK Indicated: Tape from “Someone in California” – Mr. Maxwell?] Pete Seeger’s “Rainbow Quest” TV Program, ca. 1965 With June Carter and Johnny Cash as guests.

(A very simple, down-home show…just Pete, and June, and Johnny – all wearing everyday, ordinary work clothes – talking and singing together…not one single other person…and no amplified instruments in any way at all. [Set list of four songs written out] T-585-K [FK Indicated: Tape from “Someone in California” – Mr. Maxwell?] Ray and Ina Patterson on stage at the San Diego Folk Festival -- 1972 and May, 1973. (Broadcast material from the two different years was combined on this tape, leaving out only duplicates of the same number.) Mandolin Workshop, San Diego Folk Festival, April, 1972: Opens with Kenny Hall; and then Mike Seeger. (As on all workshops, occasionally you can hear some faint singing in the background; and often some pretty loud applause. This extra noise comes from another workshop being help at the same time. Usually the other workshop is in the other end of the big auditorium, with the 2 groups separated by a not-very-soundproof divider!) Mandolin Workshop, San Diego Folk Festival, May, 1973: With Kenny Hall, Ray and Ina Patterson, and other. (Kenny Hall’s VERY LOUD foot-tapping on the floor, to keep the beat, is particularly noticeable here…although it’s likely to be heard almost any place he is playing!)
