The calendar, which dates from July 2012 — June 2013, features around 70 vet students, posing nude or semi-nude in agricultural settings with strategically-placed animals or objects to cover up private parts.
Four photographers were appointed to take photos at several locations which included a shearing shed, alpaca and pig farms, riding stables, netball courts, the Manawatu Gorge, Staglands Wildlife Reserve near Wellington, a Belgian Blue farm in Hawke’s Bay and the Tui Brewery at Mangatinoka.
Third year vet student Abby Sine said students undertake practical work on farms in the area early on in the vet programme.
“A lot of the photo-shoot locations were a result of contacts that students had with local farmers.”
The calendar concept was initiated seven years ago as a fundraiser and celebration for students reaching the half-way point in pursuit of a veterinary degree.
The front cover of this year’s calendar is an ancient Olympics theme and includes a link to the 2012 Olympics.
Ms Sine said students began talking about the theme of the calendar late last year and voted on it.
“We went with an ancient Olympics idea and everyone turned up in the most amazing body paint and costumes for the group cover shot.”
She said students found posing for the calendar to be a mixture of nerves

and excitement.
“I think people were pretty nervous but once they got over the initial shock of being naked, they started to relax and have fun.”
Every year 10 percent of proceeds from calendar sales are donated to a chosen charity.
This year the New Zealand Wildlife Health Centre (NZWHC), where sick and injured wildlife are treated, will be the recipient. The centre also aids in the recovery of New Zealand’s native birds and are the first responders to oil spill scenes like the recent Rena disaster.
“Usually a little extra is thrown in as well, so the more calendars we sell, the more we can help support a fantastic organisation such as NZWHC,” said Ms Sine.
Last year’s calendar sales raised over $3,000 for SPCA Canterbury.
Calendars can be ordered through www.vetcalendar.co.nz at a cost of $15 plus postage or purchased from any Massey University third-year vet student.
The New Zealand Veterinary Association is a major sponsor of the calendar.

Customers around New Zealand have been encouraged to vote for both their favourite farmers’ market as well a preferred stallholder.
Feilding Farmers’ Market is currently in a prime position on the voting leader board against much larger markets in other regions.
“It is great to see our small rural town do so well amongst regions like Tauranga, Hastings and Hamilton,” said Feilding Promotion project manager, Raewyn Loader.
“We have such a great community here which is why we give the bigger markets a run for their money.”
Mrs Loader said the Feilding Farmers’ Market was a business initiative set up by the Community Development team of Feilding Promotion seven years ago.
“It’s aimed at attracting more shoppers to Feilding, providing a start up platform for new businesses and increasing our town’s rural profile and has been very successful on all counts.
“It’s a good dynamic for people to visit Feilding on a Friday with the farmers’ market, the saleyard tours and the Coach House museum.”
New Zealand Prime Minister John Key recently visited Feilding and spent time at the Feilding Farmers’ Market.
“It was a nice surprise for customers who were out buying their weekly supply of fresh locally grown produce,” said Mrs Loader.
The Prime Minister spent his time at the market chatting to stallholders and also took part in a game of chess with Feilding Intermediate students.
“More importantly however, we did get

Results of the 2012 Taste Farmers’ Markets Award for Farmers Market of the Year will be announced at an award ceremony and dinner to be held in Auckland on July 1.

HARD WORK AND SHEER DETERMINATION sees young farmer achieve goals
Manawatu dry stock farmer Christine Christensen began collecting four-leaf clovers while growing up on a sheep and
deer farm in central Southland.
And although she said this collection may have stemmed from her desire to create her own luck, it’s been through hard work and sheer determination that the 27-year-old has achieved so much.
After completing a Bachelor of Applied Science at Massey University in 2005, followed by First Class Honours in Agriculture in 2006, Christine
took on a technical sales agronomist position with Cropmark Seeds.
Just two years later, Christine and her husband James bought their first farm in the Pohangina Valley — a 120-hectare property.
Christine said they achieved this goal through saving.
“I’ve always been a saver,” said Christine. “Monopoly was my favourite board game as a child and it still is, with trading property an interest.

“They’re not making any more land in New Zealand so we like to know we’ve got a piece of it.”
Christine said it required good budgets and a strong will to convince the bank that although they were young, they were passionate about agriculture and had the ability to build up equity through owning land.
The couple also bought a house in Palmerston North in 2009.
“It’s somewhere to live and an opportunity to increase equity with eggs in different baskets,” said Christine.
The farm was leased out for the first three years of ownership to allow the couple to develop it while paying off capital.
“It’s a hill country farm so has required fertiliser inputs, fencing and track maintenance.”
James and Christine graze dairy heifers and run beef stock, beef breeding cows and a small flock of sheep on their farm.
Christine balances working on the farm with her position as a junior research officer in the Fertiliser and Lime Research Centre at Massey University.
Her position involves conducting research based on nutrient cycling and mitigation strategies for reducing the environmental footprint of farms, while maintaining or increasing production.
Christine also teaches professional
development courses in nutrient management and undergraduate agricultural classes.
This year Christine has set a goal to complete her PhD in soil science, more specifically ‘Duration-controlled grazing of dairy cows to reduce nutrient losses to waterways’.
She has completed field work measuring pasture, grazing cows, collecting drainage water and now the
necessary data has been collated and is currently in the writing phase.
Since attending Massey University, Christine has had a long and active involvement with New Zealand Young Farmers (NZYF), holding several committee positions with the Massey Club before moving to the Fitzherbert Club in 2005. Christine was also the regional administrator in 2006/07, regional chairperson of Taranaki/Manawatu in 2008, and national NZYF conference convenor in Palmerston North the following year.
“I’ve spent nine years in NZYF, having a great time and have met a huge network of people including lifelong friends and business contacts,” she said.
Christine has competed four times in the Taranaki/Manawatu regional final, including the 2012 event.
Away from the rural community, Christine is also a Highland and National dancing teacher and judge.
With all of Christine’s commitments, she said time management is most important along with getting enough sleep to ensure the waking hours are as productive and efficient as possible.
“Also in the case of joint property ownership and marriage, be prepared to compromise,” she said.
“Prioritise the important things and stay focussed on the goal posts at the end of the field,” said Christine.

Passion for fruit
F our years ago, the couple sold their Northland farm and initially started to look at properties in
the Bay of Plenty region.
“We couldn’t find what we wanted,” said Sue.
“Then we visited friends who had just purchased property in north Taranaki and found this one for sale.”
The couple researched the climate, soil type and fertility of the area
before deciding the farm had potential for further horticultural investment.
The 360-acre farm already had 850 avocado trees planted on it and the Stilwell’s have added one acre of passionfruit and around three acres in kumara.
Eighty acres of the farm is in QE2 Trust and the balance of the acreage is leased to the neighbouring dairy farmer for grazing.
Gavin and Sue decided to transport
by Denise Gunn
Gavin and Sue Stilwell grew kumara in Northland for 20 years before making the move south to Taranaki
their kumara growing equipment with them to Taranaki.
“We knew it could be a quick cash crop to give us some income to live on while we established the passionfruit orchard,” said Sue.
“We have only planted three or four acres of kumara each season as we didn’t want to have to employ a lot of staff.”
Deep, fertile volcanic ash covers the property and a micro-climate lifts the temperature up to three degrees warmer than New Plymouth city. The property is also virtually frost free but is exposed to the wind.
“To plant the kumara and passionfruit, we only had to remove some avocado trees and do some drainage and levelling,” said Gavin.
A-frame structures have
been constructed to support the passionfruit vines and the 4000-sqm of hail/frost cloth cover. Fencing and gorse spraying have improved

“Over the last few years we had decided that we wanted to have a go at growing passionfruit, even though it had the reputation of being a high risk but possible high return crop.”
Both Gavin and Sue work full-time on the farm with each of them having a specific area of responsibility.
Kumara beds are put down in late September. Planting is in mid-November with weed control continuing throughout their growing period.
“We harvest in late March or April depending on how warm the summer months have been,” said Sue.
“The kumara are then put through a curing process which involves heating and cooling and are then able to be stored in temperature-controlled sheds for up to 12 months.”
The passionfruit vines are constantly growing so the couple are pruning, training and thinning throughout the year.
“They start dropping their fruit around mid-February and we could be picking fruit right through until their major prune in October.”
Sue said the kumara and passionfruit operations work well together.
“The only clash being at kumara harvest in April when we could be in the peak of our passionfruit harvest but that would only be for a couple of days.”
The couple sell their kumara to New Plymouth Pak’n’ Save and their passionfruit are sold through Turners and Growers

Sue also has a stall at the Farmers Market in New Plymouth on Sunday mornings.
The couple have now lived on their north Taranaki property for three years and found a lot of similarities in horticultural production with Northland.
“We have found that our kumara yields and quality are as good as or better than those we achieved in Northland,” said Gavin.

Joints are any part of the body where 2 or more bones meet. The main types of joints are the brous joints such as tooth sockets, those solely of cartilage such as vertebrae discs and thirdly the mobile synovial joints such as knees and shoulders. The most common problems that affect joints are accidental damage especially to these mobile joints, all forms of arthritis and speci c problems with joint structures such as bursitis and tendonitis.
Our knees and shoulders are incredibly complex synovial joints. Have a look at an anatomical image of a shoulder joint and you will see what I mean. There are tendons attached to bones, tendon sheaths to allow tendon movement, joint cavities with synovial uid, little bags of lubricant called bursars and of course the cartilage covering the bones. All of these structures can cause problems including arthritis, bursitis and tendonitis.
Osteoarthritis is the progressive loss of the cartilage that covers the ends of bones. The pain is as much caused by in ammation as the actual loss of cartilage. While there is obviously some wear and tear aspect to the disease the latest research suggests that this is a true disease process rather than just accumulated wear.
Research in the last decade by K. Yudoh et al (2005) and C. Ziskoven et al (2010) indicates that the real cause may oxidative stress which then triggers in ammation. This concludes that free radicals damage the chondrocyte cells that make and support cartilage. If these cells are damaged and die this results in the erosion of cartilage. In other words osteoarthritis is much more like iron rusting away in the salt air.
My approach to osteoarthritis is now based on this latest research and my own observations over many years. I take a “3 legged stool” approach. Firstly we add a range of antioxidants to combat the free radicals attacking joint cells. Secondly we add a range of anti-in ammatory compounds including Omega 3 and a number of plant based anti-in ammatory compounds and thirdly speci c amounts of joint supporting compounds such as Glucosamine and MSM. It is very important to get personalised and monitored advice because different joints respond to different doses of different compounds and of course everyone is different. Give me a call if you need help.

Breed makes its mark
East Friesian sheep are considered to be one of the world’s highest milk-producing breeds and are
commonly used purely as a milking breed in Europe. When crossed with other sheep meat breeds, the East Friesian is also well-known for their high fertility.
Eleven pregnant East Friesian ewes and four rams were imported to New Zealand from Sweden in 1992 and placed into quarantine at Silverstream near Dunedin.
A breeding programme at the quarantine station began using embryo transfer techniques and the derivatives were sold.
Four years later 40 rams were sold along with extensive sales of semen.
Paul and his wife Debbie farm 202ha
of sheep, beef and crops near Rongotea. Paul is a fourth-generation farmer on the property.
The couple initially trialled around 50 direct East Friesian embryo transfers into their Romney ewes.
Paul said they were looking to improve milk production from their ewes, increase lambing percentages and raise lamb growth rates.
“We were also keen on the sheep milking side of it,” said Debbie.
Shortly afterwards the couple bought an East Friesian ram from Silverstream, in partnership with Mark Collis, to put back over the resulting ewe progeny. Several Romney/Coopworth ewes in lamb to an East Friesian ram were also purchased.
by Denise Gunn
It was the East Friesian’s traits for high milk production and improved lamb growth rates that led Manawatu sheep farmers Paul Henson and Mark Collis to first assess the breed at a private quarantine station near Dunedin, and then introduce the rare breed to their Manawatu farming operations in the mid 1990s
Photo: Denise Gunn
The breeding operation has also become a family affair with the couple’s three children successfully showing purebred East Friesian lambs at local agricultural shows and
their school’s lamb and calf days. The lambs eventually join the rest of the East Friesian flock

FOREST OWNERS – Do you have trees near or ready for harvesting?
In 1998 when the Rangitikei Sheep Milking Group was formed, Paul and Debbie joined up.
The six couples belonging to the group began to supply milk to a company in Auckland for ice-cream production.
Milk was also sourced from an experimental East Friesian flock at Flock House Agricultural Centre near Bulls.
Sheep milk has been found to be a good alternative to cow’s milk for those people who suffer from lactose intolerance. It is also known to have a calming effect on eczema.
Unfortunately the Rangitikei Sheep Milking Group was unable to supply a steady quantity of milk and the group disbanded.
“The stocking rate drops a bit,” said Paul.
Along with the breed’s high fertility rates, the East Friesian generally has a sound udder and teat placement.
One of the breed’s most distinctive physical features — its thin tail without wool and bare area around the back end — means the sheep tends to stay clean.
“No docking is required on the purebreds and fly strike is very rare,” said Paul.
The Henson’s breeding operation has continued to be a family affair over the years with the couple’s three children, Hannah, Bridget and Tom, successfully showing purebred East Friesian lambs at local agricultural shows and their school’s lamb and calf days.
The lambs eventually join the East Friesian flock and the couple now run 60 purebred East Friesians and 2,500 crossbreds.

“It just wasn’t viable at the time,” said Debbie.
Paul and Debbie continued with their East Friesian breeding programme putting a terminal sire back over East Friesian/Romney ewes.
Paul said they’ve found the breed produced a lot of lambs and rear them well.
“They are particularly good for the dam side but not so suitable on the terminal lamb side.”
The couple have also found that as the East Friesian is a late maturing, larger framed sheep, they haven’t been able to run as many on their property.

The ride, jointly organised by Oroua Downs School and Foxton Rotary, will cover a 40km loop track over farmland, pine plantations and around Lake Kaikokopu and Pukepuke Lagoon. Several farmers in the Oroua Downs area have offered the use of their properties for the event.
Oroua Downs School principal Richard Lloyd said the role the farmers play is the backbone of the event.
“Without the support of the farmers and their willingness to open their land to others, events like our one simply couldn’t happen.”
“It really is generous,” said Mr Lloyd.
Volunteers have spent several weekends preparing the course in the lead
up to the event and others will help out on the day.
Mr Lloyd said volunteers are crucial to the event.
“An event of this size requires a number of people willing to give up their time to make sure the riders have the best possible experience.
“We have some brilliant men in the community to help with the track and making sure everything is safe, through to those that support our trail bike ride with their fantastic food preparation.”
“Our volunteers really make the day special for the riders that can come

a long way to support the event,” said Mr Lloyd.
Previous Oroua Downs trail bike rides have drawn riders from as far as Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington and Taupo.
An entry fee of $30 covers the ride and
a lunch. A mini track at a cost of $15 is also available for younger riders.
Funds raised are split between Oroua Downs School and Foxton Rotary.
Mr Lloyd said money raised in the past has gone to specific resources for the school’s pupils including quality reading material and more recently notebooks.
Foxton Rotary spokesperson Bruce Jack said the Rotary club links up with the school for the trail bike ride and the event brings the community together.
“Money raised goes straight back to the community,” said Mr Jack.
Riders need to assemble at Oroua Downs School in Lake Road, just off SH1 between Sanson and Foxton, from 8am onwards to enter. The ride starts at 10am.
“It wouldn’t happen without the generosity of the farmers,” said Mr Jack.

Bad Boy Mowers and MTVs have taken the world of multi-terrain vehicles by storm with a new range of electric 4 x 4 off-road vehicles.
This United States-based company has been forefront in the manufacture of tough vehicles, ideally suited for rugged, rural environments, since the early part of this century.
Its 2012 model line-up of Bad Boys MTVs includes the 1500E electric utility vehicle.
Simplicity Imports NZ Ltd introduced these multi-terrain vehicles to New Zealand and now has several dealers nationwide.
Simplicity Imports director Bruce Henderson said the MTVs come with an on-board charger and require 12 hours for a complete recharge.
So after a busy day out on the
New electric MTV range takes market by storm
farm, the vehicle can be plugged into a standard socket overnight and left to charge, ready to go again next morning. And there are no worries about overcharging as the vehicle’s smart charge system automatically shuts off when fully charged. The manufacturer also recommends plugging the vehicle in anytime it’s idle for peak performance.
These new MTVs can cover up to 70kms on a full charge depending on speed, type of terrain tackled and the load carried.
The motor features two speeds with a high and low range gear selection and can reach a top speed of 45kmph.
An added advantage to the Bad Boy electric 4 x 4 vehicle is its minimal maintenance compared to an internal combustion engine. And its quiet operation makes it ideally suited to farmers and hunters with little disturbance to livestock and wildlife.
The MTVs also come in three colours; black, orange, and a
camou age pattern which is a big hit with hunters.
To nd a dealer near you and to view a demonstration of the vehicle’s extensive features phone 0800 38 44 50.

With the payout high and interest low, it’s a really good time to fix the things that are causing some grief around the Dairy.
Before you upgrade to new Milfos cup removers or a Milfos Variable Drive Vacuum System it would be sensible to evaluate things that could impact on your proposed upgrade.
Sparkies generally do a great job, however, we regularly come across wiring of all sorts that has been installed incorrectly.
For instance we see the right cable used on say, a milk pump controller, but still bundled with everything else so it creates interference with the controller and bingo, a slightly crazy controller. Unless you know what to look for it can be a painful process to find as it looks like a faulty controller.
This is important for all sorts of systems from pulsation controllers to cup removers and the more sophisticated the system the more careful you have to be. We recommend keeping data cables as far away from power as possible.
We have all heard about stray voltage, yes it does exist and can cause all sorts of issues, we have found a major source is the cable and terminations between Variable drives and Motors.
There is a lot of documentation supplied with variable drives with regard to the cable to be used and metal glands for terminations etc, these are minimums and a good Sparky will follow manufacturer’s recommendations or better. If in doubt get it checked.
Don’t forget the effluent or water pump, same deal, and move the electric fence unit to the implement shed, they can be an interference nasty in the dairy.
For sensible advice on Upgrades, find your local Milfos dealer or Area Sales Manager at www.milfos.com.
Notes from the shed with Mark McKewen
Your Service Providers are all busy servicing, installing and upgrading in the traditional rush. Routine servicing can sometimes take a bit of a back seat to installs and breakdowns; however some of the work like machine tests etc can be done any time throughout the year in an orderly programmed manner.
It’s worth considering moving routine work to quieter periods; your Service Provider will probably appreciate it.
June is a good time to start thinking about those summer projects like that new Rotary, Herringbone or feed pad.
These things take time to get through council, organise builders etc and it’s a very good idea to be ahead of the process.
Get the best advice you can, check it all out and ensure you don’t
buy a short term solution that will not be upgradable. You don’t know what the future will bring but I can tell you it will be better than what is available today, and you will want to have it!
The National Fieldays 2012 are beginning to take shape and there will be more things to see this year than ever.
You’ll find Milfos at the same site as last year - F74 and F76. Come and see our new products on display; from square liners to chilling, it’ll all be there.
Ask about the 2012 catalogue! We will have some at National Fieldays so please call in to get your copy, contact your local Milfos Service Partner or visit www.milfos.com.
We look forward to seeing you at Fieldays!
Winter is finally here and while a lot of farmers have dried off there is still plenty to do.

“We were surprised with how interested farmers were in the competition as taking a photo of an effluent pond and sending it in to be judged takes guts.”
“The panel looked at the photos on their merits to see if the pond was low and had storage capacity, and if the clay or synthetic liner was well-maintained,” said Dr Wilson.
Judges also looked at whether effluent was crusting on top, major cracks in clay liners and maintenance of weed growth around the ponds.
The award-winning pond on Ken and Christine Sole’s farm near Opunake was completed in March this year.
Lower order sharemilkers Dan Merritt
and Shelley Moselen have just completed their first season on the farm, milking 530 Friesian/Jersey cross cows on a total milking area of 200 hectares.
Shelley said the pond is compliant with the Taranaki Regional Council and to Fonterra standards and the pond’s large storage capacity enables them to irrigate the farm throughout the dry months of the year. An effluent spreader is used for application.
“We save money on fertiliser costs as we don’t have to fertilise the irrigated paddocks.”
“The effluent is an excellent natural form of fertiliser,” she said.
With a well-managed pond, the couple are also able to go away for a weekend without worrying about the effluent.
Dan and Shelley said they were really pleased to find out the pond, which measures 54 x 54 metres and is 2.2 metres deep with a

“It is recognition of all the hard work that has gone into the building of the pond and the ongoing management of the pond by Daniel to keep it low,” said Shelley.
“We are proud that our farming
practices are compliant and are environmentally friendly.”
DairyNZ is organising barbecues for the winning farm teams to celebrate their awards with farming commentator and former All Black Richard Loe.

DairyingHigh concentrations of Streptococcus uberis are found in the environment in the colder pre-calving monthsIt has been proven that ensuring optimum teat and udder health before calving can reduce post-calving infections caused by S.uberis, particularly in heifers during early lactation.
Pre-calving measures available to the dairy farmer for prevention of S.uberis infections include dry cow therapy, teat sealing, or teat spraying. Dry cow therapy/teat sealing can be ineffective or even contribute to the problem if not done correctly. Teat spraying has been proven to reduce heifer mastitis cases by up to 50% in the rst three weeks of lactation if done three times a week for the three weeks prior to calving. Effective teat spraying is dif cult to achieve when the herd are grazed off-farm at locations which have limited facilities.
WETiT Teat Sprayers have developed a portable system to effectively apply emollient and a sanitising solution to the udder, offering a low-cost, drug-free solution that can be done with no or minimal labour input. Their technologically advanced QD0 in-race system monitors each cow, switching on and off at different positions and frequencies for individual cow requirements. Cow ow is not an issue and the coverage is second to none for every single cow. Now this technology is easily able to be taken to the cows — wherever they happen to be.
By mounting the QD0 and pumping system in a portable frame WETiT have made it possible for the unit to be positioned in a race or gateway and used when it is needed in the weeks prior to calving. The portable QD0 means that spraying can be done as the cows exit the yard, feed or standoff pad. They can be sprayed when they are given another crop or paddock break by putting the cows into the race than allowing them onto the new break over the portable QD0.
Pre-calving teat spraying bene ts include:• Reduced teat and udder damage
caused environmentally
Pre-calving teat spraying made easy with Portable Teat Sprayer• Soft, supple resilient teats in early
lactation• Reduced mastitis bugs present when the
teat canal opens for the calf• QD0 can be dropped into the milking
routine wherever it is requiredWETiT designer, David Carey, says that
the portable QD0 will provide better results than any other equipment on the market because it delivers:
• Accurate application of solution in this very challenging cow ow environment
• Precision and thorough coverage to unwell, high-risk cows that limp, struggle or stop while passing through the QD0
• The ability of complete teat barrel coverage with zero shadowing due to the spray droplet ight path
• Effective surface area coverage onto the teat due to angle compensations made for air pressure in front of and behind the udder
• Almost no missed cows from highly enthusiastic overlapping cows
Of course, after moving the system around to deal with pre-calving spraying, it can then be positioned at the shed for the rest of the season.

DairyingCalf scours may be all bad, but there’s
a good option at hand for clients who end up battling with sick animals this spring.
The Rotagen Combo range remains unique as non-toxic, non-withhold vet only antibody treatment for calves affected by common pathogens like Rotavirus 6 and 10, Coronavirus, Salmonella, Cryptosporidium, and or E.coli (K99).
New Zealand is the only country in the world where speci c antibodies against speci c pathogens — (Rotagen Combo) — is a registered animal remedy.
The Rotagen Combo range is based on Globigen, a spray-dried egg yolk powder derived from vaccinated chickens which contains IgY’s speci c to a particular organism — rotavirus 6 and 10,
Calf scours! Remember Rotagen this spring!
coronavirus, salmonella, cryptosporidium, and E.coli (K99).
Globigen is made by vaccinating high health status ocks against a speci c pathogen. The hen then passes maternal immunoglobulins from serum to the egg yolk which is collected, then spray-dried, heat-treated and standardized to a determined IgY titre. This is then formulated into a Rotagen combination product by Vetpak here in NZ. Any Rotagen combination of the above IgY’s can be produced on request to meet a speci c challenge.
IgY antibodies provide a passive immunity effect in the gut in the same way bovine colostrum would. Studies show that IgY’s successfully pass through the gastro -intestinal tract in an active form and are not altered by the digestive process. Their ability to bind to antigens is maintained within the local gut.
As the Rotagen products are based on a local gut immunity provided by immunoglobulins, there is no issue with toxicity and no withholding period.
The product can be used with calves of any age and treatment can be initiated at any stage of infection. It can be used to both prevent and treat speci c calf scours.
A recent addition to the range is Rotagen Crypto, a cryptosporidium speci c treatment for calves.
Approved by the ACVM as an aid in the prevention and treatment of calf scours caused by cryptosporidium, this is available as a stand-alone product without the addition of rotavirus. This is particularly useful in cases where the herd has been vaccinated for rotavirus, but the farm has a history of cryptosporidium parvum scours in their calves.
Calves of any age or weight can be treated at the same dosage rate. For prevention, the recommended dose is 10 grams per calf per day for ve days. For treatment, dose calves with 10 g twice daily for the rst day, then 5 g twice daily for three to seven days.
Appropriate rehydration is essential and Rotagen can be used in conjunction with electrolytes or milk feeding.

The Problem:• Unsecured and low-ranked creditors are
often left empty handed when a debtor is bankrupted, liquidated, or placed in receivership.
• When a debtor signs a General Security Agreement (‘GSA’) with a creditor over ‘all present and after acquired property’ they may unknowingly be giving more security to the creditor than is necessary for the transaction.
Potential Solutions:• A security interest may exist in relation to
borrowing, leasing of goods, and sale and purchase of goods on credit.
• You can register a security interest online. It costs $3.07. Registration can be the difference between realising and losing your interest in goods. The date of a security interest is usually irrelevant to priority between creditors. The date of registration is all important.
• When taking security over speci c goods, ensure that the debtor and goods are adequately described, and that registration takes place within 10 days of the debtor receiving the goods, failing which the general security holder may take priority.
• Where you lend money to your company, it may be prudent that you register a GSA over company assets to rank ahead of company creditors should your company fail.
• Lenders often ask for security for lending at a ratio that is disproportionate to borrowing.
• Where you are a sole trader or are in a partnership giving a GSA to a lender, the assets secured likely extend beyond business assets to your home and personal belongings.
• Negotiate with lenders. If you cannot avoid giving a GSA, at least have it limited to your business assets.
Taking ChargeThe Personal Property Securities Act has been around for some time. But, creditors are still failing to register and debtors failing to understand security interests, to their detriment
