Target Audience: Nurses, nurse practitioners, nurse educators, long-term care
administrators, and others interested in care of the older adult.
Attendees will define the unique health care needs, issues and concerns of the
geriatric patient aimed at enhancing the health status and comfort level of
elderly patients.
The Geriatric Update is intended to be an overview of topics that nurses will
need in caring for the elderly adult. Subjects addressed will be a good
introduction of topics needed for preparation to take the ANCC Gerontological
Nursing Certification Exam. Nurses who plan to sit for the Gerontological
Nursing Certification Exam should study in more detail.
Objectives:
Correlate the normal aging process to healthcare promotion and needs of
the geriatric population.
Identify acute and chronic physical illnesses often encountered when
providing care to senior adults, including complications such as pain and
UTI in the geriatric patient.
Assess the physical status of the geriatric patient.
Discuss the psychiatric and behavioral issues of the geriatric population
with regards to assessment and treatment of mood disorders or neurocog-
nitive disorders.
Explore medication issues surrounding care of senior adults.
Examine end-of-life care needs and issues of adult seniors living both
independently and in long-tem-care.
Discuss signs, symptoms, and legal mandates surrounding elder neglect
and abuse.

refunds are issued thereafter. Cancellations
received the day of the course are not eligible for a
