240.Steadfastness in the path of Allah

Narrated Ibn Abbas (r.a); Abu Jahl said, "If I see Muhammad
praying at the Kaaba, I will tread on his neck." When the
Prophet (p.b.u.h) heard of that, he said, "If he does so, the
angels will snatch him away."
Narrated by: Ibn Abbas (r.a)
Recorded in: Sahih Bukhari, Tirmidhi
Explanation: Abu Jahl had spoken these provocative words
in front of the people. In another narration this has been
mentioned in more detail.
When the prophet (p.b.u.h) was praying he said three times
have I not stopped you from this? The prophet (p.b.u.h)
after completing prayers voiced his (p.b.u.h) anger and
warned him.
Abu Jahl said, on what basis do you warn me, you know that
most of the people of Makkah support me (i.e., if you warn
me and put pressure upon me you cannot overcome me for
most people in this valley support me and is there anyone to
support you against me?)

At that time these verses (9 18) of Surah Al-Alaq were
revealed:
:

:6: :6 :6
Did u see him who forbids a servant (of Allah) when heprays? Did u consider: what if he is on the Right Way and
enjoins piety? Did you consider: what if he gives the lie (to
the Truth) and turns away (from it)? Does he not know that
Allah sees everything? No indeed; if he does not desist, We
shall drag him by the forelock; by the lying forelock steeped
in sin. So let him summon his helpmates; We too shallsummon the guards of Hell. (96:9-18)
Abdulla bin Abbas (r.a) the narrator of this hadith said,
swearing upon Allah, if he had called his supporters, angels of
Allah would have got him.

Chapter-9: Trials in the path of establishment of religionPart-30 3 | P a g e
Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, I have been threatened and subjected
to sufferings in the path of Allah. No one has been tortured
and subjected to suffering like me. Thirty consecutive days
have passed in my life wherein me and Bilal (r.a) had nothing
which any living being could eat except for that little thing
which Bilal (r.a) had hidden in his armpits.
Recorded in: Tirmidhi
Explanation: Allah raised prophet (p.b.u.h) to make His
religion prevail. To stop prophet (p.b.u.h) from this mission
the disbelievers of Makkah threatened to kill him (p.b.u.h),
tried to frighten him with severe punishments, rebuked him
and also hurt him physically to the extent that they left no
stone unturned in torturing and hurting him, they kept
adopting all possible measures against him. Such hardships
had never been faced by anyone inviting towards Allah
(daee) other than prophet (p.b.u.h).
Irrespective of all the difficulties and hurdles faced the
prophet (p.b.u.h) was doing this task alone initially and his
weak financial status was adding to his difficulties.
He had to tolerate hunger for a full month. Bilal (r.a) was with
him then, they had nothing to eat for themselves except that
little stuff which Bilal (r.a) had hidden in his armpits and they
tried to satisfy themselves with it.
May be this is highlighting the journey taken (in 10th year of
prophethood in the month of shawal to invite the people to
Allahs religion) by the prophet (p.b.u.h) to Taif.

242.Physical torture in the path of truth
()
When Khabbab bin Ardh (r.a) came to Umar (r.a), he said, O
Khabbab (r.a)! Sit close to me, you are the most eligible after
Amar bin Yaser (r.a). He (Khabbab bin Ardh (r.a) showed
those scars and marks on his back which were caused by the
atrocious acts of the disbelievers.
Narrated by: Khabbab bin Ardh (r.a)
Recorded in: Ibn Majah
Explanation: Khabbab (r.a) remembered the period of his life
in Makkah when the disbelievers of Makkah had laid him on
a bed of fire and the fire was put off by the fat that melted
from his body. Irrespective of such tough torture this sincere
worker of Islam remained firm in his love for Allah and his
prophet (p.b.u.h). He showed him those deep scars and
marks on his back which were caused by the brutal acts of
the disbelievers.

Chapter-9: Trials in the path of establishment of religionPart-30 5 | P a g e
Narrated Anas (r.a), the messenger of Allah (p.b.u.h) had his
front teeth damaged on the day of the Battle of Uhud, and
got a wound on his head. He was wiping the blood (from his
face) and was saying: How will these people attain salvation
that have wounded their Prophet (p.b.u.h) and broken his
tooth while he (p.b.u.h) called them towards God? At this
time, God, the Exalted and Glorious, revealed the Verse
(O Messenger!) It is not for you to decide whether He willaccept their repentance or chastise them, for they surely are
wrongdoers. (Surah Al Imran, verse 128)
Narrated by: Anas (r.a) Recorded in: Sahih Muslim.
Explanation: In the battle of Uhud, the blessed face of the
prophet (p.b.u.h) and his lower lips were hurt, his lower frontteeth were also broken. The protective covering the prophet
(p.b.u.h) had on his head also broke to pieces. The face was
bleeding. Fathima (r.a) tried to clean the wounds but the
bleeding would not stop rather it only increased. She burnt a
part of the mat and applied its ashes on the wound which
immediately brought the bleeding in control. At this juncturethe prophet (p.b.u.h) prayed against them; and Allah
expressed that it is His decision to punish or forgive anyone.
Instantly the prophet (p.b.u.h) prayed in their favour with the
following words. (Recorded in Fath-e-Albari Tabrani)
O Allah, forgive my nation, they do not know (the reality)

244. Firm determination required in the path of Allah
(-
)
Narrated Jundab bin Sufyan (r.a); In one of the holy Battles a
finger of the prophet (p.b.u.h) (got wounded and) bled. He
(p.b.u.h) said, "What are you just a finger that bleeds, you got
this in Allah's cause"
Narrated by: Jundab bin Sufyan (r.a)
Recorded in: Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim
Explanation: The prophet (p.b.u.h) fell to the ground in the
battle of Uhud as he was hit by a stone, his finger was injured
and started to bleed. The prophet (p.b.u.h) addressed the
finger by quoting some verses from a poetry by Abdullah bin
Rawah (r.a) which means that, you have to sacrifice
everything in Allahs path. The hand is a part of the body and
you are one finger of the hand which is still not detached
from the body, rather you have been only made to bleed by
the hurt of a stone. No big sacrifice has been presented in the
path of Allah, only a simple hurt and this pain that you have
endured is in the path of Allah.

Narrated Qais: I heard Saeed bin Zaid saying to the people, It
is a fact that Umar (r.a) had tied me and his sister
(Fathima)(r.a) for having accepted Islam, while he was notyet a Muslim.
Narrated by: Qais (r.a) Recorded in: Sahih Bukhari
Explanation: Recall that Saeed bin Zaid (r.a) was the paternal
cousin of Umar (r.a) and also his brother-in-law. Fathima (r.a)
the sister of Umar (r.a) was married to him. As both Saeed(r.a) and Fathima (r.a) had brought faith he became
extremely angry and tied them with ropes and imprisoned
them. In another narration it is said that when a person from
Bani Zohra tribe informed Umar (r.a) about his sister and
brother-in-law accepting Islam, he turned to their house in
extreme anger. While talking to them, the information hegot, was confirmed and he started beating Saeed (r.a) too
much and hurt him too. Fathima (r.a) the wife of Saeed (r.a)
could not tolerate and attempted to save her husband when
Umar (r.a) beat her as well, and the slap she got was so hard
that her face started to bleed. Inspite of these hardships both
husband and wife remained firm in their faith. This incident

made Umar (r.a) rethink for a moment, he changed his mind
and decided to accept the faith which he was not willing to
tolerate even for a moment.
246.Tribulations due to Acceptance of Islam
(-
)
The Prophet (p.b.u.h) told, O Abu Dhar (r.a), "May this work
(Islam) be kept a secret, return to your people and invite them
to Islam. When you get the news of our victory, come back."
He said, "By Him, Who sent the prophet (p.b.u.h) with the
truth, I will proclaim my conversion loudly amongst them (i.e.
the pagans)". Saying so he went to the Sacred Mosque and
proclaimed loudly, "I bear witness that none has the right to
be worshipped except Allah, and Muhammad (p.b.u.h) is the
Apostle of Allah". The Quraish said to each other, catch this

apostate. The People got up and beat him to the extent that
he would have died, but Abbas (r.a) came and knelt over him
(to protect him) and said (to the people), "Woe to you! Don't
you know that this man belongs to the tribe of Ghiffar and
your trade to Sham is through their way?" So he rescued him
from them. The next day Abu Dhar (r.a) again did the same.
Again they beat him in vengeance; and again Abbas (r.a)
knelt over him (to protect him) and rebuked the Quraish.
Narrated by: Ibn Abbas (r.a)Recorded in: Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim
Explanation: For having proclaimed his faith Abu Dhar
Ghiffari (r.a.) was twice beaten very badly in the precincts of
the Kaaba. A band of people jumped upon him; if Abbas had
not come to save him the supporters of evil would have killed
him. But he came in between the fuming disbelievers and
saved him with the argument of the economic losses they
would incur due to this approach stating that the Ghiffar
tribe lived on the highway between Makkah and Syria and if
you hurt and beat a person of their tribe then your trade
caravans would not be able to pass by them.
