l TRADERS say they will lose out due to the five-week closure of the A41 between Broxton and Hampton Heath. The county council has been forced to close the road to complete resurfacing and restructuring works. But local businesses say they will suffer, partly because surrounding roads have been closed to stop people cutting through from the A49.l TARPORLEY woman Leslie Tuckwell is visiting the Middle East this month to plant olive trees in places where they have been destroyed in the conflict.Leslie is part of The Olive Tree campaign, which aims to plant 50,000 olive trees as a symbol of peace. TARPORLEY Parish Council is urging people to put their event in the village diary to avoid duplication. The council has put the village

diary in Swaffields so that organisations arranging the likes of garden parties, fetes, car boot sales and fayres can avoid clashes. The council says: “We are fast

approaching that time of year when the many community organisations in the village will be staging their summer activities.“Avoid duplication and make

sure yours is the only event on that particular day.“Put the date of your event in

the Village Diary so that other organisations arranging an event can avoid that day. This way everyone benefits.”

Tarporley Talk March 2009 15

TWO months in, it’s safe to say that 2009 looks set to be defined by change. New car prices have hit an all time low with some prestige car dealerships offering up to £25,000 off last year’s prices! Granted these vehicles were retailing at £140,000. Needless to say it’s time to look after what you’ve got, used vehicles are losing money everyday and it doesn’t look like it’s getting any better in the foreseeable future. For some however this is a great time of the year

as it really is a buyer’s market for used cars. People who are selling cars will unfortunately have to face the harsh reality that the average family car up to three years old is losing up to £500 per month in depreciation. This doesn’t give you many options for selling your

car as dealers offer horrendous prices for trade ins. Don’t let this put you off however because believe it or not, people are still buying so making your vehicle stand out and look better than the rest couldn’t be more important. SPOTCHECK VALETING are offering special

rates on their pre-sale valet services to help you through very difficult times. SPOTCHECK cover all the important selling points on your vehicle including, underbody wash, exterior

wash with hand wax to restore and protect paintwork, alloy wheels, carpet and

upholstery shampoo, trim and window clean, stain removal and leather care package, all under bonnet levels checked and topped up. We also carryout SMART repairs which include

scratches, dents, wheel restoration, which really are key points to get your car sold for the best possible price in today’s market.SPOTCHECK VALETING operate 7 days a week so

booking your valet couldn’t be easier.

so THaT’s HoW WEGoT our naME!

fooTBaLL TaLK... TarporLEY VICs fC

THANK you to all who replied to the previous article with regards as to how Tarporley Vics got its

name. The definitive response came from amongst others local resident Maurice Hunt who confirmed that Tarporley Vics owe their name to Vic Hitchin. In post-war Tarporley there were at least three teams playing football in the village including Tarporley North End & Tarporley F.C. Those who played for Vic’s side therefore told people they were turning out for Tarporley “Vic’s side”, which over time became Tarporley Vics and was duly registered as such in 1947 when the Chester and District League was formed and the Vics became founder members.Maurice is owed another debt of gratitude from all at Tarporley Vics F.C. Maurice was the Chief Coach of the Tarporley Football Development Centre. Every Saturday morning Maurice and his assistants coached a large number of Tarporley’s young players and Tarporley Vics are now reaping the rewards of this training with the technical ability exhibited by our team members giving the present coaches an excellent base to work from. The players themselves appreciated Maurice’s coaching so much that they have now set up “The Maurice Hunt Appreciation Society” on Facebook! On the pitch the First Team are still on top of the Cheshire Building Society Cheshire League Division Two. The weather has been a little kinder to Tarporley Vics 1st Team during February, although the poor underfoot

conditions have not suited the Vics’ style of play which has led to one defeat, two draws and a solitary win during the month. The chasing pack are now in touching distance of the Vics and wins are now required from every match to keep them at bay and the dreams of promotion still alive. The Reserves have only been able to play three matches although they have won them all. They played Sandbach United Reserves, M.M.University F.C. and Malpas Reserves notching up eleven goals in the process. These results move the Reserves up to fifth place in the League just five points behind leaders Curshaws F.C.On the social front the ”Tarporley’s got Talent” evening was a huge success. Thanks to every one who took part, donated prizes and helped to organise the evening which raised money for an Armed Forces charity and for Tarporley Vics FC.

To keep up to date with further news and our forthcoming fixtures visit our Website, www.tarporleyvics.co.uk, and please come down to Tattenhall for our “Home” games and cheer on the Vics in this important period of the season.

TarporLEY HIGH sCHooL

TARPORLEY High School and Sixth Form College have been working together with the Tarporley Rotary Club for the past few years now, enabling students to gain valuable experience of applying for jobs and being interviewed. Prior to the interview, students write a C V and a letter of application for one of six jobs and

they have a short session during Citizenship Days on how to conduct themselves during interviews. The current Year 11 surpassed the high expectations that the Rotary club expect of them,

claiming the accolade of being the best Year Group ever in terms of the quality of interviews, letters and CV’s produced. Dick Powell, Tarporley Rotarian thanked the students during a recent assembly for questioning the stereotypes of students today. Every member of the Rotary club was impressed with the quality of candidates, their drive

and vision as to where they want to be and how to get there. Once again a record number of prizes were awarded.

The photo shows students with Sarah Lee, the Headteacher and members of the Tarporley Rotary Club, David Lilley, Dick Powell and Jim Webb.

OVER 70 pupils from Tarporley High School and Sixth Form College have taken sell-out audiences from their seats in the school hall to the magical world of Neverland in their musical performance of JM Barrie’s ‘Peter Pan’.The pupils were rehearsing the play since

September 2008 and dedicated over 40 hours of their spare time to the production. Directors Helen Griffiths and Robyn Louis are incredibly impressed with the cast’s dedication: “We have pupils involved in all year groups from 7 to 13 which is a wonderful thing. The pupils involved are not only those on the stage acting. “Many pupils have decided to get involved

by taking responsibility for lighting, sound,

costumes, props and stage management and without them the show would not be possible. This production truly is a celebration of their dedication and talent.”Peter Pan, played by Helena Parker-Clark,

a year eight pupil at the school declared: “I’ve had an amazing time doing Peter Pan, I’ve made loads of new friends from other year groups. It has also helped my confidence and I can’t wait for next year’s show!”The production is one in a long line of

successful performance evenings for the school following on from ‘Summer Spectacular’, ‘A Christmas Carol’ and ‘Bugsy Malone’ in recent years.

VOLUNTEERS are urgently required to save the Tarporley branch of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The branch has been in existence for 35

years and the hard working committee has been very successful in its fund raising efforts in the village and surrounding area over all these years. But secretary Roy Hitchens admitted that

they are desperately short of numbers, which has put a huge question mark over the future of the branch. He said: “It is therefore particularly sad

for me to report that, due to retirements, people moving away and deaths that we have been unable to replace members of the local committee and helpers despite our considerable efforts.“We have arrived at the moment when,

without further help, we are unable to continue our fund raising efforts and there is a real risk that we may have to disband the Tarporley Group.“It is a very important national charity, &

the community recognises it as such & have always given generously to help the

organization to support the lifeboat men who risk their lives on many occasions, mostly as volunteers.”Roy added: “In spite of our several attempts

to recruit replacements over the last three years, almost none have been forthcoming and there is now every prospect that the branch will have to be disbanded.“We wish to make this final appeal for help

in continuing our fund raising efforts for this very important charity which is one to which the people of Tarporley and district give very freely.”The branch currently raises about £1300

a year, mainly from quizzes, collecting boxes and donations. Roy says the work is not difficult and only involves two or three committee meetings each year.If you can help please call Barbara Wilson

on 01829 732572 or Roy on 01829 733423.
